i don't see what's "logical" in idm... -_+

(not that i see that much what's really "intelligent" or
dancey in it either :))

Fuck it, stay with IDM but forget what it stands for. It
sucks to place terms on music anyway but it's as good a name
as anything.

you don't need classification, but sometimes you just
need a word or something to use when writing, especially on
this board.

and i hate i.d.m. because much of it isn't dance music and
to call it intelligent might sound a bit stuck up.

i'd prefer:

electronica
abstract (?)
experimental

so there.

I'll just stick with IDM, and like Jar says, forget what it
stands for.

''I-D-M'' has a cool edge to it, anyway, sounds
aesthetically cool coming out of your lips.

IDM!!!

See?

I don't even think about the ''dance'' aspect, this isn't
fucking DANCE music.

Braindance is the best word for it.

I think I would prefer the term electronica but IDM is short
and sweet, even tho I think its stupid to consider it more
intelligent than any other music, even tho it IS better. I
also like the term braindance, because if ANY, that's the
dancing that would occur IMO.

YEah but braindance is only for the IDM that one can
actually dance to, right?. . . or something like that.

offline Apt_Zet from Afghanistan on 2002-06-22 03:53 [#00279794]

Ya, I thought braindance was something different. I would
never refer to Aphex or AE as braindance.

Also why the hell do these have to have "dance" in them?

I don't mind "IDM" now. It seems to have taken on a meaning
of its own rather than what the acronym stands for.

offline diemax from somewhere in tennessee :( (United States) on 2002-06-22 05:38 [#00279824]

... funny i thought it meant "international dance music"
which made a hell of a lot of sense to me- oh and to all of
you anti-dance fags, i can dance to anything, and i'd like
to remind you that "idm" is based on electronica which is
based on rap, which is based on eightys synth pop, which is
decidedly "dance" music
so fuck you, ophecks

The 'dance' part is what gets me though. Could you dance to

when was the term IDM coined, cause maybe it was used to
describe ORbital, and Underworld, and groups like that who
did make dance music, and still make dancey music... even
SAW85-92 is pretty dancey, some of the songs at least...

You can't dance to VI Scose Poise...the only way you could
POSSIBLY start MOVING to the MUSIC (i'll quite that
talking..gee) is by like having convultions on the floor in
some RABID (oops) way.

offline jand from Braintree (United Kingdom) on 2002-06-22 07:27 [#00279923]

yeah, IDM was coined back in the days when it was still
closely allied to Dance Music...

But yeah, it's not that danceable anymore...

My only problem with IDM is that it's too close to that
other micro-genre EBM (Electronic Body Music - Front242 &
that lot)...and the Intelligent bit is kinda weird...

fuck it, electronica kinda covers more ground...I'd use it
more often but IDM is so quick n easy to type..

"oh and to all of you anti-dance fags, i can dance to
anything"

Have you got a disco jump suit? Can you dance to me giving
you the finger?

Anyway, so this makes it dance music? Ya, know I could dance
to "High Frequency Sounds" off of 2 remixes by afx but ya
know what? Call me a fag but I don't think that is dance
music.

By not using "dance" I wouldn't say it doesn't mean you
can't dance to it. Hell, dance to stairway to heaven, it
doesn't mean you go call it a dance song. I would say that
it is definately not the intention of the music that it be
dance music. Some music is obviously made with that purpose
and is noticeably different in style.
