VIRTUAL RECORD LABEL

1. the musical track
2. the making of the master
3. the artwork and layout of the CD
4. the pressing of the CD
5. the promotion of the music
6. the distribution of the music
7. the website

THE MUSICAL TRACK
Who has veto over material? I favour a democratic and
personal approach to this - I also would want to encourage
such things as Remote Production and Collaborations

THE MAKING OF THE MASTER
How do we make the transference? What is the correct/normal
format to make the master from? How much would it cost to
make a master?

THE ARTWORK AND LAYOUT OF THE CD
The artists and designers should submit portfolios, so as to
gauge different styles. Then it would be a case of deciding
which style would suit a particular release

THE PRESSING OF THE CD
How much would it cost to press a run of CDs? How many CDs
would it be prudent to run each time? What else should we
include on the CD apart from music?

THE PROMOTION OF THE MUSIC
How do we promote the music? Spam record stores in a
professional manner? Submit music to record stations (e.g.
the john peel show on Radio One in the UK/online radio
stations)? Here is a good opportunity for people to think of
wacky/catchy promotional ideas

THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE MUSIC
Set up a connective network with Independent Record Stores,
each of whom should be persuaded to house at least 10 CDs of
a current release -- World-wide, we should aim at between
100 and 500 such record stores to begin with -- which would
hopefully stock at least 1000-5000 CDs all together. Here
each member can submit a list of such record stores in their
area, which can be contacted and liased with. Also, a
website would be essential (simple yet beautiful), not only
for online orders, but for things such as streaming,
biographies of musicians/artists/video makers &tc

THE WEBSITE
How much would it cost to set up a website with a decent
bandwidth? Have to work out things like design, music/video
streaming

These are just my own personal questions and idea

I wont comment on all this, as that would require to much
thinking which I cant manage at the moment.

1.the veto should be like 2/3ish type think. majority rules,
if more people like it than hate, its in. if its a tie, we
flip a coin.

5.all of the above

7.depends on how much content you have, and how much you are
willing to pay

stickers and and stencils all over the place.
and flyers in GOOD shops
also, hit the right people with copies of the record.
eg.Maddog Wallace, Mary-Anne Hobbs, John Peel.

Have we decided on a name yet?
Then people could start making designs for the logo etc.

It is fucking great. There is a place out at Hackney who
will press up 1000 white labels for £685 + vat. Anyway
check out the link and decided on cd or vinyl.

Instead of pressing cd's right away, we make a site where
you can vote for favorite songs by the artist that are
hooked up with this VRLabel. And the best artists get
printed on cd. comments?

Good idea, how about let anyone (not just members of the

do with the quality of the music & less with politics...

man, i want in on this. i dont know the details, but im
about to release a vinyl (local aus) its me and 43 other
guys. weve got 4mins each on a 7" which is being pressed
hear for $100au=50 copies each.

so, if i find where this is being pressed, this means we can
get 7" (16min @ 331/3) for $400au.

now the best thing about this to you guys is that the au $
is worth shit to the pound.

i think our $ is worth about 0.38 pound. so i could (if i
find where this place is) get 200 7" vinyls for around 160
pound.

dont know if this helps at all. my typing is shite, im
drunk. but im not shitting, and i think the numbers are
right.

someone go to a currency conversion site and see what the
aus dollar is worth in pound.

i'll try find out where these things are being pressed.

Ok, if we go for that deal that Quernstone mentioned above
which is 685 pounds, then 1,000 vinyls would cost us
$1,024.69 in US dollars.

thing is - $1,000 is only $10 each per pressing per release
- not that much is it? i would be willing to put up at least
£100 for the website and stuff, and then other
contributions after that :)

when i move to america and get my better job i'll be willing
to put in even more money - i'm serious about doing this and
i realise you need at least SOME money to make money

this weak currency thing was something i had thought about -
because we are global, we can get the cheapest way of doing
things :) but anyways, let's not get ahead of ourselves -
first thing to do is to pool our talents together and put
them in one place so we can gawp at them ;)

vision is everything mi amigoes

also, i was HOPING we could BUILD UP to releasing a record a
month -- get some rhythm going and such -- cos there's a
lotta musicians here and they'll all want their piece of the
pie :D a compilation first would definately be best - like a
followup to aktium's excellent a phexation :)

CD-R's. as long as you let people know what there getting,
it shouldnt be a problem. as long as youve got decent
artwork, evrything will be sweet. and that way we can keep
the prices way down. we can burn them as needed.
just set up a paypal account and where away.

offline skodt from Toronto (Canada) on 2002-06-21 14:05 [#00278314]

to begin, i believe it is wise to set up a website [amazing
design is a necessity] with streaming audio [real audio] so
that people can hear the music, but not keep it. if we want
to get anywhere, i don't think it would be wise to put up
mp3s.

we should also have [as hepburnenthorpe said] CD-Rs with
soem real swank art/design that contain a compilation of the
'most professional sounding' artists on the board. One
track each.

also in the package would be the addy to the site and the q
> which 'insert label name here' artist would you like to
hear more from in the future?

some record stores will let you put some titles in their
shop on a consignment basis.

i'm not sure how swift vinyls would go around here [toronto,
canada].
in fact i'm pretty sure it would be hard to move them for
this kind of music.
electronic listeners here use CDs, and even DJs are turning
to CDs over vinyl. [last evening i was speaking with a
resident DJ who plays at three clubs a week and he uses CDs
for better sound, portability, accesability, etc]

yeah i agree that vinyl is doomed - also, this CD-R business
could be a viable way to get our name/artists established -
i don't believe it's too hard to make them look
professional...

...the first thing i want to get down is a website - so if
any netheads out there know how much it would cost, and the
best way to go about getting a host, tell ASAP :) after we
register it, it's down to the slick designers to get to work
:)
