Think it allows you to patch MIDI stuff (synths, drum machines, etc.) into other things, dont ask me what, because I dont know. Just a kind of "go between" from something that is MIDI capable to something that is not.

I use a USB Midisport 2x2 from Midiman. It allows for 32 midi channels. On top of that, my soundblaster gives me another 16 channels.
Each midi-in/midi-out couple can use 16 channels. So, if you get a 4x4 patchbay, you'll have 64 midi channels and so on.
The prices are pretty steep even for an 8 port bay.
