A LONG time ago i started coding with visual basic. but
didn't get to far due to moving. Now I've decided to
re-learn some. One of the most interesting languages, infact
the one i'm starting to learn at the moment, is C#. Now, i
know all about it's major simularities between it, and C++,
but my question is this; Will i be fine coding for C# in a
C++ compiler? I'm pretty sure that i can't. I also can't
seem to find a C#, or ".net" compiler. what's the formal
name of this so i can search the p2p clients.

You won't be able use a C++ compiler for C#....C# is part of
MS .NET framework & currently only MS do a c~ compiler which
I think it's all part of MS Visual Studio.NET .... that
probably what you need to look for...

Have a hunt on MSDN or MS's website as well...you might be
able to download it for free off MS anyway...

Haven't used it myself so not 100% sure but MS keep
bombarding me with info about .NET and that seems to be the
package they mention a lot...

Let us know how you get on...

you need to download the "Microsoft .NET Framework Software
Development Kit"...

The full thing is pretty big (130mb) but contains everything
you need...

its at http://msdn.microsoft.com/code/sample.asp?url=/msdn-files... ....

check out the C# column at msdn.microsoft.com ... the
article called Bits, Flames, and Links gives loads of
info..(I'd give you the direct link but MS bing MS hide the
addy ;(...).. but yeah, read that article...

Features....

Command-line compilers for Visual C++® (cl.exe), C#
(csc.exe), JScript® (jsc.exe), and Visual Basic®
(vbc.exe); the C++ compiler understands the new Managed
Extensions
Samples (many written in C#) and nmake.exe to build them
Enough of the .NET Runtime and .NET Framework to support the
compilers and samples
The usual link.exe
A command-line debugger (cordbg.exe) and a GUI debugger
(dbgurt.exe).
An Intermediate Language (IL) assembler (ilasm.exe),
disassembler (ildasm.exe), and validator (peverify.exe)
A host of other tools for application configuration and
deployment, WinForm design and viewing, security management,
and JIT management
Quite thorough documentation on the runtime, framework,
tools, and languages; I'm actually pretty impressed by the
quantity and quality of docs provided
Notable omissions:

Visual J++®
Visual Studio®. This means no editor, no integrated
debugger, and no integrated help (you can work around this
limitation somewhat; see below)
On-demand product and customer support from Microsoft

gulp...I'm not looking forward to learning that lot tho I
guess I might have to in the end...

I'm still not 100% convinced it's gonna take off...despite
all the pushing from MS...

Thanks for hooking me up wioth the link. man, you've helped
me to many times on this board...what is this? #6?

anyways: "I'm still not 100% convinced it's gonna take
off...despite
all the pushing from MS... " I feel that this will be huge.
in a few years, when internet speeds are a bit faster, and
everyone has high-speed access, the .net enviroment will be
huge. I'm a bit skeptical on the premise that i don't like
micorsoft ruling the world.

on a diffrent note...how come there aren't any big time
competitors? Like a japanese counterpart? the japanese
always come out with "updated" counterpart corporations.

no problem...

yeah, it's got the potential to be huge & more than likely
will be...it's just a worry that our entire experience of
the net will be via MS...they arn't an innovative company
and .NET is them trying to be...

But I don't really know enough about it to really judge...at
the moment it seems to be such a huge-monumental structure
and it's kinda tricky to see the big-picture...

if you find a good overview anywhere, let us know the
link...

anyone have windows 2000? is is there a better next gen OS
that'll run fine with a 45o Mhz, and 96 mb ram? I can't find
win 2000 on the p2p's. If you have it, please e-mail me and
we can set up an ftp trade.
