Is Beckham overrated?

To preface, I'm just a casual football fan so I could be
way off base here but it seems to me that Beckham is
overrated.

In the game against Argentina, he didn't impress. After all
it was Michael Owen who earned the penalty kick which was
the real task. Today's match against Nigeria, it was much
of the same: a rather unimpressive Beckham.

He just doesn't seem to control the game the way a Figo or
Zidane does.

So now I ask you European football fanatics: Is Beckham
overrated?

i didn't even know who he was until last week.
he now has the same hair as meself.
but to be quite frank, i think his wife has a little
something to do with it.i'm sure he's good and all, but the
media does like it's glorious fairy tale couples.
oh, and he has pretty kewl hair now =)

Great question thirdball...

I am an England supporter and have watched Beckham maybe 100
times for England & Manchester United. He is a very
energetic player with good close control, attacking instinct
and one of the most lethal crosses in the game.

I have seen Beckham win games almost single-handed, and
there are maybe only 5 or 6 players capable of that.

Unfortunately, Beckham has been injured (broken foot) for 7
weeks and has only 2 weeks training completed .. he is not
100% fit, so you wouldn't expect the best of him yet.

As for Zidane and Figo, they are unfit also, and Figo in
perticular has looked jaded and off-colour for some time
now. Of the three, Zidane is my favourite , he seems to be
the greatest player when fit. Beckham is one of the best
when fit, but his lifestyle and looks get him the extra
attention and hype. If anyone says he's only an average
player however, they're talking shit !

Oh, and his temperament to come back from the folk-devilling
he recieved after France 98 in the English press is highly
impressive too ...

I don't think he is overated at all , he is very important
to Englands team.
He do get a little to much attention though but thats
media....

And like smokehammer said , recovering from that hate he
recieved after France 98 is very impresseive.

it is the morale that he brings to the squad that is so
crucial -- he is a great england captain and has become an
exemplary player in the last 4 years

i like zidane the best of of the three u mentioned-it seems
he always know what to do with the ball-he doesn't
complicate
beckham has a killer cross-its clearly that he's been very
carefull about his injury so far in the turnament
figo hasn't been the same since the injuriy otherwise he
plays a lot like zidane
its a shame that all three (also rivaldo)
had problems with injuries, and they are not fully fit-i
think it would really lighten up the world cup
