It is quite interesting that birds are capable of imitating
only the simple beats, but when I give them something more
complicated, they only react to certain pitches that they
choose and create a simple beat out of the complicated one.
Is it possible that their "communication" is based rather on
rhythm and repetition than the pitch

(however, this should not be confused with a range of tones
they use)

I have made this observation myself

Great Topic...

Done some reseach into this myself...looking at bird
calls/songs...

They seem to use very hifreq stuff (very localised) with
extreme amounts of resonance, somewhat akin to the way a 303
works...

Also, slow down the calls & you'll hear an almost
IDM/Glitchy rhythm...

Also look at them in Cooledit ro something similar and you
real visually see the sheer wonderful-ness and
complexity....

will try and dig some links out....
