the downward spiral

rob fragilenine from everywhere on 2001-07-16 07:52 [#00015362]

On my version of NIN's The Downward Spiral, at the end of
the track Hurt there is approximately 44 seconds of silence.
Is there any hidden meaning to this?

m....MwMw wwW(m M m)Www wMwM....m on 2001-07-16 08:01 [#00015367]

I think it was just the emotional state at the end, when he
basically committed suicide, the silence was there to make a
greater impact on the listener. That song is so depressing,
the whole album is neurotic. That "god is dead" song is
pretty seriously scary.

|REFLEX| from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on 2001-07-16 08:46 [#00015374]

yeah that album is fucking amazing! I always loved it, i got
it the day after it came out, yah back when. . . . . Oh
wait.. you mean the first album, i was talking about the
"further down the spiral" the remix album, that ones better
in my opinion, check it out if you dont already, its FAR
more fuct up, its the most distrubing NIN album to date! Has
AFX doing 2 tracks! Awsome! But yes..... its for effect {the
silence at the end} have you seen the video for hurt? thats
what its like.... just.. that loud noise at the end, then
dead silence... let your nerves do the rest

>:D

rob fragilenine from everywhere on 2001-07-16 08:54 [#00015378]

I have all of the official NIN albums + the Broken and Fixed
eps. I agree they are all incredible... I like Broken's 90
tracks of silence, is that on the US version too?

The version of Further Down The Spiral that I have is
version 2. It only has 1 track by Aphex Twin. I've seen
version 1, but I don't know if it's worth buying, it has
basically the same tracks (except a few differences), but it
comes in a nice shrinkwrap cover!

I've also seen a 2 disc Closer pack, which contains part 1
and 2 of the Closer single. I've been thinking of buying
that for a while...

leftrightronic on 2001-07-16 09:04 [#00015379]

rob, i take it you know of the 2 hidden tracks all the way
at the end of the broken cd. i just liked how 90 blank
tracks or whatever was just thrown in there to prepare for
the last songs. when i first listened to the whole thing im
like cool this was good shit.. then i was laying down
thinking the cd was over and a minute later 2 new tracks
start up.

cool shit

rob fragilenine from everywhere on 2001-07-16 09:09 [#00015381]

Yeah, I know of the 2 secret tracks, from what I can
remember they're called 'physical' and 'suck'... i think

Johnny Mnmenasm,saf on 2001-07-16 09:26 [#00015384]

I tottaly agree, masturbating to that album is excellent

|REFLEX| from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on 2001-07-16 09:31 [#00015388]

uhm yeah.... but seriously here..... yes NIN is awsome, and
I have every single Halo {release} there is by them! except
the 2 video package, I used to own it, but I sold it for
some stupid reason a few years back. I don't know why. The
closer remixes are great.

>:D

RockHoward from Queretaro, Mexico on 2001-07-16 17:07 [#00015528]

hmhm i cant wait for the new DVD/audio NIN´s release...
"And all that could have been" sounds pretty good.

hevquip from an egren's coffee shop on 2001-07-16 17:13 [#00015530]

aphex twin did do two tracks for further down the spiral.
there is at the heart of it all, then he did part b for one
of the songs after it (track 9 or 10). it sounds kind of out
of place. has anyone seen the new video on t.v. for some
song of the tomb raider soundtrack?

isn't there supposed to be a new release coming out soon?

Barrett, Syd from Cambridge on 2001-07-16 17:22 [#00015534]

The "character' in the "story" of the downward sprial does
not kill himself. the last lines of the album are "I will
find a way"
it ends with a desprate gasp of hope.

rob fragilenine from everywhere on 2001-07-16 17:28 [#00015538]

I've heard that The Fragile picks up where Hurt leaves off.
In which way is this??? I think The Fragile is more
'happier' than The Downward Spiral... Maybe he's regaining
hope? Maybe I'm looking too far into things?

m....MwMw wwW(m M m)Www wMwM....m on 2001-07-16 18:37 [#00015569]

Barrett: incorrect.

IF... I could start again, a million miles away, I would
keep myself, I would find a way.
Keyword: if, would
He would need a complete life reboot to fix what was wrong,
and he chose not to "keep himself" because he was unable to
start again, at least in this life, maybe in the next
reincarnation.

I also have the further down the spiral. It's very good too,
the backwards lyrics and everything. I like maralyn manson's
antichrist superstar and Downloads Eyes of stanley pain for
similar disturbing reasons.

The Constipator on 2001-07-16 20:18 [#00015583]

I think the sum total of Trent Reznor's work can be summed
up with one word:

"Wah"

Cheer up, Trent, you're making millions

Stone from Hell, U.S.A. on 2001-07-16 22:56 [#00015604]

Rob:

The Fragile picking up where TDS leaves off? I'm not sure,
it could be interpretted as that I suppose. The Fragile is
very depressing, but it is true that there is a small lining
of hope to it...that theme seems to be the spine of the
album, whereas the bitterness and anger and depression is
the body.

It seems more or less about a man going through a series of
midlife crisis, yet ultimately not killing himself, unlike
the younger man on TDS who does the deed...then again "The
Great Below" could be a suicide attempt, but then there
wouldn't be a second disc. :D

There is definitely a coherent story line, at least on the
first disc. It goes from anger (somewhat damaged), to
melancholy (The day the whole...The frail), to bitterness
(The Wretched), to hope (were in this together), to sadness
(The Fragile), to depression (Even Deeper) then combining
Anger Bitterness and Hope (No, You Don't) Then combining
Sadness Melancholy and Depression (The Great Below)

I didn't include the three instrumentals here (Just like you
imagined, etc.) because those can be interpreted a billion
different ways.

This is the way I see the album. You are welcome to
disagree.

Barrett, Syd from Cambridge on 2001-07-16 23:07 [#00015606]

sorry, i had that wrong. yes. but at the same time, the
character dosen't kill himself. i've heard and read trent
saying that it ends with the character completely broken,
but about to try to fix things..................

The Constipator - you're an idiot. we don't need to hear
from you ever again.

Barrett, Syd from Cambridge on 2001-07-16 23:09 [#00015607]

fragile isn't part of the same story of downward. it can
make sense, that they're part of a story, but it wasn't
intentional

|REFLEX| from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on 2001-07-16 23:46 [#00015619]

hevquip: I have that video you are describing, i have it on
my computer. you can have it if you wish. its .mpg format,
its called "Deep'. Its pretty cool.

>:D

Ive been into NIN forever... so damn long. I remember when I
got Pretty Hate Machine, and the Head LIke A Hole versions.

m....MwMw wwW(m M m)Www wMwM....m on 2001-07-17 07:38 [#00015698]

I havn't even heard the fragile yet.

awt on 2001-12-22 00:22 [#00063415]

im crying.
You cant talk about HURT
How can you ask a stupid question likke that. Just feel it
please

teapot | xanpha from brisbane on 2001-12-22 02:15 [#00063424]

get the Japanese 'Downward Spiral' it has the track 'Dead
Souls' stuck in between 'Big Man With A Gun' and 'A Warm
Place' its good stuff.

The Fragile pisses all over everything ever except Confield.

digidogheadlock from under a rock on 2001-12-22 09:20 [#00063494]

my fav nin CDs are fixed, broken, pretty hate machine and
downward spiral.... i have all 1-6 halos and then 8, 10, 13
and 14... i just can't get into his newer stuff from perfect
drug to his latest release of things falling apart... the
fragile sounds kinda like pop muzick//

i wouldn't mind seeing NIN/AFX live though... who would back
up who? :P

schack from den haag on 2001-12-24 16:43 [#00063928]

that's a cover from joy division isn't it? wonder how that
is.
also i've always wanted to express my loathing for 'man with
a big gun' i initially found it so stupid, i've come to like
it over the years.
btw am i pleasantly suprised at just having discovered one
of the best songs of nin is by aphex twin, it's one of those
atmosperic songs that make 'further down..' so good; turns
me on to aphex even more (i've only recently started my
collection)

Jarworski from Wales on 2001-12-24 22:12 [#00063962]

for another joy division cover, check out Karma To Burn's
s/t debut

Fuck, fuck the j/d cover, just listen to the rest of the
album

Caserol Joe the Chubby on 2001-12-25 05:57 [#00063994]

Is the hurt video the one with the live footage and the
screen with crazy dark images? I was at the show that is
featured. I was in seventh grade at the time. That show
was incredible as far as I can remember. I got to meet
Enigma of the jim rose circus, you may have seen this guy
eating raw fish on the X-Files in an old episode, he has
tattoos from toes to scalp.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Naphex-Male from Vancouver, B.C. Canada on 2001-12-25 08:34 [#00064002]

Pretty Hate Machine is the best album by NIN....but I am
strange.

LtAirComStarscream from NY on 2001-12-25 10:39 [#00064004]

anyone see that video they were suppose to release but never
did of a guy cutting up another guy then having sex with his
dieing body. I saw it its fucked up. i think its called the
broken tapes or something. it has clips of the murdering in
between videos by nin.

awt on 2002-01-09 11:34 [#00067633]

oh i recenlty got a new song (andallthatcouldhavebeen) from
the still cd. The song is great really nineinchnailsy. One
of their best song i would say

titsworth_courier from washington, dc on 2002-01-09 19:22 [#00067769]

just to clarify, there isn't "40 seconds of silence" at the
end of hurt. it's feedback that sounds a little like wind
blowing. but they were right about the purpose it served. as
for "dead souls" that is a wonderful nin cover of joy
division off of the crow (first) soundtrack. recommended.
that's a great cd too.

as for the new song "and all that could have been" i heard
it's a masterpiece. but i'm not downloading it yet, i'm
gonna wait till the 22nd. but if you want to hear it, go
to:

nancykitten on 2002-01-09 19:41 [#00067771]

god i love the downward spiral. its an obsorbing, tense,
dramatic, sombre, dark piece of electronic emotion. reptile
and ruiner are probably my fav highlights.

titsworth_courier from washington, dc on 2002-01-09 19:51 [#00067772]

me too, nancykitten. TDS was my fave album till radiohead
came out with ok computer. it was #2 till trent came back
with the fragile =) i'm sorry, i imagine you disagree but
that is trent's finest hour (and fourty-four minutes). it's
a flawless record and much more sonically interesting than
TDS, which i didn't think could ever be possible. i couldn't
listen to TDS for 2 years after the fragile came out cos it
just sounded like shit in comparison. i listened to TDS
again tho recently and i love it once more. my favorite
tracks:
-piggy
-i do not want this
-hurt
-the downward spiral

but they're ALL wonderful. heresy skips on my cd, but, to be
truthful, heresy, mr. self-destruct, and reptile don't do
much for me anymore (post-the fragile). since may of 2000
i've been in the process of planning and mixing a massive 80
minute NIN remix cd project, blending lots of different
parts of songs together.

nancykitten on 2002-01-09 21:07 [#00067799]

The Fragile is brilliant also : )

If you're a fan of this album you owe it to yourself check
out the demos on the deluxe edition

I'd wager that Brittney Spears wrote better demos lol...
somehow the finished tracks transcended the Brittney
paradigm though uhh

the downward spiral is still on my top five albums fing
after god knows how many years. i purchased a prophet vs on
the advice of captain reznor, though i didn't have the balls
to leave it in the backseat of my car with the windows
cracked.

T. Reznor liked writing piano riffs on his K2000 and
smearing mascara all over his face while his band mates
supposedly exploited "his" celebrity/stardom

way ahead of you.

after the initial emotional gut-punch of it, it becomes
quite liberating. you no longer have to give a shit, and can
finally do what you want.
