Who cares, it's not meant to be thought about, just enjoyed.
Shut yer mouth, turn off your brain and open your ears!

Suppose someone with more know how than me were able to
build a program that told the music to mutate randomly, and
the best "most fit" mutations were selected to be re-mutated
again and again, mimicking the theory of evolution. This
person would have to define exactly what they want to be
selected, in a logical way so the computer would understand.
You could say "select anything that is very irregularly
symmetrical" but you'd have to define what is meant by
that.

I've come to the conclusion that music is frankly the wrong
medium to be working with to realize more complex and
interesting ideas, since it's very limited. The best medium
would be computer gameish, you can program behavior, almost
anything. Many seperate entities can interact together in a
complex organized way. Music is basically a single line
through time that cannot be reversed, it's just sound, it's
hard to do much with it, it's like trying to make something
really great using only one yellow crayon and a flat piece
of paper. I'll probably change my mind next tuesday on
whatever matter I was talking about (I forgot already).

music is two things. the most simultaniously basic and
involved thing is the expression of raw emotion. the second
is a need for money

music is the second most basic show of raw emotion, sex is
the first

„For this purpose the qualification „beautiful“ or
„ugly“ makes no sense for sound, nor for the music that
derives from it; the quantity of intelligence carried by the
sounds must be the true criterion of the validity of a
particular music.“

Iannis Xenakis in "Formalized music: Thought and mathematics
in composition" 1963-1992

hehe - what is art? the tough question! whatever it is it's
in the mind of the beholder, so it's an opinion.

a sentence we say so that we can be heard, is an organized
sound without being music...

oh but you see... i do call it music... language is an art,
a form of expression, that is why music is an art, which is
also a form of expression. which is why language is music,
because it is organized in such a way that it expresses
something. Whether it be questioning, and blah blah blah...
you see?

offline Crocomire from plante (United States) on 2002-06-08 02:23 [#00255355]

well but that's an opinion, true it's not music as popular
opinion goes, but someone could think someone elses words
sounded like music.

music does not have to have time signatures or a key
signature or a relative pitch all it has to have is some
sort of organization. the noise is already here... it just
needs to be organized or written down or looked at or
pressed to hear it again or recorded.
