Autechre vs. Dj Shadow

Okay lemme explain a few things first before all the
hardcore autechre fans start wailing on me...

I just got Tri Repete ++ and The Private Press yesterday.

I also own Endtroducing and Incunabula.

Now Autechre is good, when compared to the entire music
scene (mtv, radio, etc...) as is Dj Shadow.

Now Autechre has some very interesting ideas, and they have
access to a lot of cool sound machines. However there are
two things that bother me: Their song structures and their
inability to hold on to my attention.
If they could focus on this more than their 'sounds'
Autechre could be A++.

Right now I'm enjoying The Private Press more than Tri
Repetee, but I honestly cant explain why. I think Autechre
is 'missing something' from their music...

Question: Are they more about the 'dancing' than listening?

well, im not a diehard autechre fan... i would like to get
more of thier cds, but i always end up finding something
else i rather buy.

They are great for zoning out, IMO, like when i am going to
bed, i turn them on, and let myself get lost. (its mp3s, i
dont know which album i have)

dj shadow is AMAZING IMO, i love it. he does so much with so
little.

however, you cant really compare them i think, cause its so
far apart. Autechre is experimental IDM, where as Dj Shadow
is hip hop/trip hop.

So i dunno.

I love Dj Shadow, and Id like to hear more from Autechre...

apples and oranges, but i'd rather listen to dj shadow. all
3 of them are musical geniuses, but i never confuse a dj
shadow song - NEVER. autechre i'd be hard fucking pressed to
tell you what song i'm listening to a lot of the times, and
sometimes i can't even tell what album it's on. "switch up
your flow nigga, your sound is garbage." that's jay-z on
nas. the same pretty much applies to autechre, as much as i
love them (i'm even wearing my autechre t-shirt from the
confield tour). they need to switch up their style. they've
been most successful at that on tri repetae++, amber, and
lp5. but chiastic slide, for example, fuck, it all sounds
the same to me man.

i'd say Autechre are more about the listening than dancing,
although i can dance a phat jig to Confield. at their
concerts the audience is standing still listening.

Yes I agree you cant compare the two because they are
totally different from each other.

But everyone tells me how bad-ass AE is but I just cant seem
to get into them.

ok, i am now listening to "The private press" and im going

It's the opposite for me, I just can't get into DJ Shadow,
even though he IS really good... the whole ''DJ'' thing
turns me off.

AE just takes me to another plain of conciousness or
something... some of their stuff is a bit drab, but when
they hit the mark, they REALLY hit it.

But I wish they'd shorten their tracks, sometimes it just
loses my attention.

Autechre are from other planets and talk with different
frequencies. The voice you hear them speak with now is a
manipulated voice controlled with a modulator in their
throat.

Autechre sweet Autechre

I don't know why, I agree it's a bit of Apples and Oranges
but Autechre explore something new with every release. No
one had conceived of anything like Confield before Autechre.
They're the kings.

As for DJ Shadow his music is extremely well done but it's
not mindblowing. At least not for me.

That track has been overplayed to death by every college kid

yea, then listen to the rest of Confield, it's most advanced
of all music right now at least i think so. Autechre are
pioneers; they bring things from the edge that you would
have never thought of and they make it sound awesome!

ae got so much more skills imo! dj shadow is ok, but
definitely cant compare to ae.

the problem with ae is it takes an awful lot of listening to
their albums before all of it hits ou right in the face. ae
are in another league.

another thing. ae has like 20 releases. how many does dj
shadow have? at least 2 that i know of. you cant compare
such unequal artists imo...

How come I can grasp such crazyness like Aphex Twin, µ-Ziq,
Squarepusher... but AE seems to slip from my grasp.

I'm sitting here listening to some songs and they get boring
after a while. I have to skip to the next track.

another thing id like to add:

most people who are now converted ae fans did not really
like, or hated even, ae when they first started to listen to
their material (me included). therefore, a lot of people
give up on them pretty quick. it's a long term commitment i
tell ya!

;)

If one must compare the two I would submit that:

LP5 is a better album cover to cover than any of DJ
Shadow's

Maphive 6.1 is a better track than anything Shadow has
done.

But after all it's just a matter of taste.

How can their song structures bother you? Each song has a
different structure, you must be bothered alot when you are
listening to them.

But what else would they focus on?

d's track)
and seriously, you can't compare these two. they're
completely different. that's like saying which is more
refreshing, napkins, or cement?

autechre is definitely for listening and its fun in the car
but a lot of times I just want to dance. IDM is frustrating
that way, becuz a lot of times it isn't intelligent dance
music its just intelligent electronic music.

unkle 'psyence fiction' was all dj shadow, the only
thing lavelle did was bring in all the guests except kool g
rap (shadow's pick) and promote it. any other era of unkle,
however, is james lavelle's doing - past and present.

I just bought The Private Press yesterday, and Endtroducing
is amazing... and well, right now I like DJ Shadow more... I
do really like Autechre, but sometimes, too often I guess, I
get bored with them... I can appreciate experimentalism
sure... everyone wants their favorite artists to experiment
and change... but I think sometimes Autechre focus too much
on the experimental... DJ Shadow just makes beautiful, funky
music that is a combo of so many different styles all rolled
up to form this hip-hop music, or trip-hop... how could you
not like that?

i guess if i really had to answer...

id say DJ shadow...

he was one of the first electronic musicians i heard... and
after i heard him, i sold my drums and bought turntables
(that didnt last long, but i sold them and bought a drum
machine... which led me to writting music, which led me to
go to Berklee and study music)

so dj shadow has had a big impact on my life...

giving up the ghost/6 days/mongrel meets his maker & you
cant go home again, and even these get a little boring-much
preffered the unkle album[might buy endtroducing as i seen
it for a fiver].but you cant compare these 2
