Autechre vs. Dj Shadow

is it just me, or what, but I have never been too impressed
with DJ Shadow. In my mind he is nothing compared to the
likes of RDJ or Tom J. Most stuff I've heard bores me.
What tracks by him would change my mind? Maybe I havent
heard the right stuff.

"lonely soul" (unkle), "dark days main theme", "high noon",
"midnight in a perfect world", "fixed income", "stem/long
stem", "building steam with a grain of salt", "rabbit in
your headlights" (unkle)

dj shadow is mad boring. i really like endtroducing, but i
have yet to hear anything since that doesn't make me lose
patience. i prefer shoelaces over mcdonalds.

Very Hard to compare. I guess I like Shadow a bit more, but
that's only because I only like AE's 1st 3 albums.

Very tough choice, they both rule.

I just can't seem to get into DJ Shadow, and I've tried...
it's just not my thing. Autechre crushes him into a fine
paste.

Some people say topics like this are dumb, ''you can't
compare them, two different styles, etc''... I LIKE topics
like this. Everything was put on this earth for comparison!
Chocolate bars are better than Venetian Snares, for example.
Porn is better than Mario Lemieux.

there is no commonality.

there is no "vs"

I think Ae is better in many ways over dj Shadow... but
again, is just my opinnion

long live dear Ae

it really was a strange comparison

but it was fun reading through it

I reckon he's pretty good, but far overrated in my opinion.
I just don't see what's so amazing about the track "Midnight
in a perfect world" which everyone seems to think is one of
the best tracks of all time... it's good you know, very
moody and smokey, but it's not like it's breaking any new
ground musically... trip hop had been around for years
before this.

I personally think RJD2 does DJ Shadow type stuff far
better.

i love them both... but i get bored of shadows music before
i get bored of autechres. this could simply be becasuse
theres more of autechres music to keep me going, or it could
be because autechres music has more depth who knows.
also, from some of the 'anti-autechre' comments (for want of
a better word, stuff like i could never get into autechre,
im listening now and keeep having to skip tracks cos they
get boring.
to my mind autechre isnt great music for sitting there,
listening, and waiting for it to grab u by the balls. at
least not at first. much better to stick it on as background
noise in my opinion. after a few plays u begin to 'get' the
music, and soon it becomes comprehensible even to just
listen to whilst doing nothing else. certainly i find this
is the case with the later, more twisted stuff.
The earlier stuff was instant pleasure for me.

I mean... what releases are included in that later stuff?

I really dislike Incunabula. it does almost nothing for me.

so that and basscadet really.. :)

amber has great stuff on it - foil and glitch are classic
tracks, incredible even.

but as whole albums (as in: I listen to it as a whole album
and like it), I think ae is best from chiastic slide and
onwards.

I also prefer autechre since chiastic (in albums)

but garbage, peel session and anvil vapre are great!!!

for me in albums its like you:

chiastic
lp5
confield
draft

I listen to these much more than what I do with incunabula,
amber or tri repetae even though I love them too

but with eps I think I listen a lot more to peel 1, garbage
and anvil vapre, than waht I listen to gantz graf, peel 2 or
cichlisuite

of course I didnt mention envane cos i listen to it a lot
(exception)

artist who names start with the letters D and J

yeah but would RJD2 have a career without dj shadow? no. his
music is completely indebted to dj shadow. instrumental
sample-based hip-hop would be nothing without dj shadow (not
the 1st of his kind but the best by far).

offline zaphod from the metaverse on 2003-11-29 20:02 [#00970844]

for one, why are you comparing these two albums? i suppose
you could assert that autechre is the future of hip hop and
that dj shadow recycles its past to make its future, but
that would be really pretentious just for a messageboard
comparison...

autechre sucks nuts, dj shadow rocks.

well autechre's music is like the abstract pieces of
classical music where the music is a SUPREME musical
existance

dj shadow is like vivaldi's four season
classical yet....POPish

confield is a masterpiece
it makes me shiver with every glitch and static sound
draft is just pure electronic love, so warm and...cold at
the same time
masterpieces for all times

i didnt mean i prefer the older stuff, i meant the older
stuff is more instantly accessable (in much the same way as
dj shadow is instantly accessible)

they CAN be compared because they both do MUSIC tho it's
pointless beyond the "i like him/them more because..." due
to subjectivity of the subject

as for confield i think it's splendid, pure aural bliss...
but have you ever wondered that many OLD records sound like
it in one way or another so you can't really say they're
better because they do things YOU never heard...

ae would win easily.

they outnumber dj two to one.

rob could get shadow in a headlock while sean administers a
severe nipple cripple.

dj shadow once said that he doesn't dig most of the Warp
stuff because it doesn't have soul. i can agree with that to
an extent.

personally i could see myself having a lot more fun at a
Shadow show than an Autechre show for a few reasons.
Shadow's show would be more dancing and interacting, where
Autechre's would probably be the typical dudes with their
arms crossed trying to figure out what they are doing to
make that sound. boooooring to me.
