...Daft Punk?

DogsBLX from Trondheim on 2001-03-20 00:28 [#00001203]

What do you think of their new album?
I think 80% of the tracks are really cheesy disco crap!
"High Life" rocks the planet, though!!

hedtwin from manchester on 2001-03-20 01:10 [#00001204]

i really want 2 hear it. i have heard good things about
it!!!!!! daft punk=good

i have 8 songs from the discovery album incl. high life in
mp3. If you want I will upload it somewhere, contact me en
email.

phiz from Amsterdam on 2001-03-20 09:15 [#00001220]

from what i've heard of it, it sounds a bit formulaic, same
old, same old, i havent heard it all properly yet but on
first glance it didnt seem too special, sorry to say it wont
be very high on my must have list.

Torley Wong from Vernon, BC, Canada / WWW.TORLEY.COM on 2001-03-20 12:56 [#00001232]

DogsBLX: well, "cheesy" and "disco" often go hand-in-hand.
for some, they're often paired with "crap" too so it all
comes down to personal preference, right?

that being said, i personally like their sense of humor and
they have a real way about crafting memorable "pop" moments
and hooks without making their music de facto pop.

phiz: after reading what you've written, there's a certain
bit of irony in the title of their single, "One More Time",
isn't there :-)?

take care all.

phiz from Amsterdam on 2001-03-20 13:26 [#00001235]

Torley,
i was thinking that when i heard it, and when you see the
video for One More Time it looks like at the end they are
being killed off, so maybe it marks a new direction after
this release.
and their website looks good, they are going to put up tunes
as and when they feel, a good idea for mp3 use.

Torley Wong from Vernon, BC, Canada / WWW.TORLEY.COM on 2001-03-20 13:42 [#00001237]

phiz: thank you for informing me, i haven't been keeping
up-to-date with Daft Punk's media coverage, i've only
listened to their new Discovery CD.

i think they'll always be true to their name in some way
tho. figuratively, of course, as in "crazy rebelliousness"!

:-)

phiz from Amsterdam on 2001-03-20 14:22 [#00001238]

torley,
i've heard you get special access to the Daft Punk
club(access to unreleased tunes and stuff) through the CD.
i think there's an ineractive part to the CD of the Album.
i've only heard the album via Napster(naughty, naughty) ;O}

zero on 2001-03-20 15:57 [#00001239]

i have the new cd, i'm not a fan of dance music but i do
like there new cd. my favorite track is faster better
stronger, those vocals are just crazy

sic from holland on 2001-03-20 18:45 [#00001242]

Phiz> there's some sort of an 'eurocard-mastercard'that
comes with the cd, and the number on that card is your
codeword for the 'very special daft punk fan site.....i know
this because a friend of mine came up with the album.....i
find it quite cheezyyyyy..........

Id Lab from Preston, UK on 2001-03-20 20:04 [#00001250]

I've heard Faster Better Stronger and a couple of others,
and I think they're cool. But I bought the first album on
the strength of Da Funk, and the rest wasn't nearly as good.
I hope they haven't filled the album with lame disco padding
again.

How about Mirwais? Same kind of area, but better from what
I've heard.

Torley Wong from Vernon, BC, Canada / WWW.TORLEY.COM on 2001-03-20 21:42 [#00001252]

phiz: yah, thanks, a friend told me that too but it doesn't
seem to be accessible from a Mac like the one i use. maybe
i'll get it to work someday :-).

Id Lab: i'll agree with you there. i like Daft Punk's hooks
more this time out, i personally didn't care for tracks on
their last album like "Phoenix" and "Funk Ad" (basically
just "Da Funk" in reverse... gosh). and the video for
"Fresh", i think it was, was hilarious!

Mirwais, in my humble opinion, is better off working with
Madonna. i won't say the same for William Orbit all the
time, but he is a good collaborator (and with Beth Orton
too).

Chuck Reimer from Wisconsin on 2001-06-28 09:29 [#00011177]

I got this album after seeing the first two videos. I have
alwasy liked Daft Punk, but this album provided me with some
more to think about. If you've seen the first video (and
maybe the second) you see a story unfolding. I was driving
a long distance, and tried to figure out the rest of the
storyline from the music, and I think I know the general
gist of the story. I personally like Disco (hell, I bought
DJ Dimitri's stuff) and a good bass line. The last real
album that I liked was The Fragile, because of the way the
album flowed. This album has the same momentum. Everything
from the classic 80 early techno stuff, to the 70's classic
synth rock and disco, maybe I would call them the lords of
loop.

A Best Of, Musique, is coming out early April. There's one
version with only the one CD and another with a CD & DVD.
Nice.

Homework + Discovery=Classic
Human After All=Good ideas + Boring repetitiveness
