I read "a child called it" by dave pelzer. I think "I feel disconnected" by you is an aural version of a part of the book, maybe during the cold long hours he was forced to lay in the cold water with his head submerged. You should read it to see what I mean (short read).

My mom read that book, said I should read it too. Its supposed to be "moving" or something. Anyway I havent got time to spare between "Advanced Windows 2000 Programming in Visual C++" and "Linux Apache Web Administration" so Ill take your word that its a good book.

prediction: In earth's future, humans will become extinct and manatees will evolve to fill the niche of ecological dominance. They will unbury our fossils and artifacts and learn about us, much as we learned about the dinosaurs. Discovering that we referred to ourselves as "humanity", they will call themselves "maniteeanity" (since it has a better sound than "maniteeity")
I wonder how it's going for wormanity... any new scientific breakthroughs in dirt eating?
It figures it was on oprah... well it was a sad good book. Poor kid. There was this theory in the selfish gene where a mother naturally evolved to create one extra "just in case" child, in case she had spare time to help feed/raise it in addition to her other children (to maximize replication of her genes by dividing her time as economically as possible into nurturing and reproducing), and that's how runts developed. Maybe the mother had the runt thing going with that kid or something, it's hard to explain. Maybe there's an ill psychological reason for her behavior, maybe something equally awful happened to her and that's how she released it.
