What do you like more?? And YES!, the two genres are totally different.
An example of a good chillout album is "Far from the Maddening Crowds" by Chicane and maybe disc two of ATB's "Two Worlds (for those who would condemn me for liking ATB, or ATB himself???. . . SHADDAP!)
An example of ambient is Lifeforms by Future Sound of London, or SAW 1 or 2 by Aphex Twin. . . contrast those those ambient albums to the two chillout albums I listed and you'll see the difference between the two genres. . .
Anyway so back to the main question? WHICH IS BETTER, WHICH DO YOU LIKE MORE?

Ambience for sure. I like abstract ambience so Id like to hear a slower, less complicated Bine, John Cages work, abstract jazz compositions and especially ESPECIALLY, this new stuff coming out called Lower Case music. Im so for that kind of stuff.

ambient rules! bands like the orb, global communications, future sound of london, salt tank are awesome.
what gets labeled as chillout seems to me to be trendy stuff that's been used on adverts.

the word "chillout" has been utterly soiled by the amount of piss-poor compilation albums using the word and the amount of utter shite artists who call their music "chillout".
(like chicane and ATB)

Chicane rules hard! ATB sucked after Movin' Melodies. I have two worlds and was shocked to find that it sucked hard. Movin' Melodies was awesome but Two worlds sucked hard. Totally alienated his audience for a more pop sound that sucks hard.

ATB isn't progressive. . . he's house/really shallow trance. . .
And Chicane is an excellent producer; much of his material is excellent, I think. . .
Anyway enough with the fucking pissing on genre names and such!!!! God what's wrong categorizing music?? It HAS to be done, you fucking idiots!
How can you think of. . . Aphex Twin and .. . ummm. . . DJ Tiesto, for example, in the same terms?? They're both ELECTRONICA but they are both TOTALLY different!!!
That's what the concept of "genres" is for you dumbasses!

I don't need genrenames 2 know the difference between Dj Tiesto and Aphex.
I produce music ,...listen 2 all music,.for sample and inspiration purposes. Genrenames R tools for media 2 hype another sound for 3 months,.till the next fad. comes in.
thats really ignorant

well... i guess ambient..as its a more defined genre...with its title given by those who created it...
as far as 'chillout' goes...no one actually makes 'chillout' ..people make various kinds of downtempo/mellow electronic music ...which gets assembled on compilations and labeled as 'chill out music' to sell to trendy people who are turned off by the term 'easy listening' but are still looking for something that is easy to listen to
(nothing against those who make music that gets lumped under 'chillout' ...or classifying music...just the type of people the term 'chillout' and the compilations with that title are intended to attract...you know the type im talking about)

exactly what I was about to say in a long post. Chillout isn't a genre, it's just a 'type' of music that's good for what the name implies. Chicane is a melodic Trance, with bits ambient with it. ATB, is just Progressive/House/Trance. There sooo much of that stuff out their, that it's nothing special.

Ambient can be dark as hell and works mainly in the subconsious mind and is often very abstract.
Chillout is just any music for relaxation, nothing specific.
