spoiled by afx?

afx (and 'pusher/autechre, etc) have spoiled me musically!

i cant listen to normal music anymore!

FOR EXAMPLE: i can't listen to rock anymore.... only a
select few great artists will do now, and even then.. i just
dont like it as i did before!

sometimes, once in a while, i feel like putting on some good
old simple (insert genre of NORMAL music here)

but its never as satisfying now as it used to be....

and compared to squarepusher's crazines... autechre's
mechanical PER-FUCKING-FECTION, boc's dreamyness... (not to
mention plaid, four tet, etc)...
.....and of course, AFX's mastering of all the different
aspects..

anyways, everything else pales in comparisson!

like i said, except for a select few artists....
do u ever miss the old days when any music could sound
good?

when you could actually listen to the radio without wanting
TO BREAK IT?!?!?!

when you could actually TALK TO FRIENDS about
music?!??!?!?!?!?!?!

its like being on some special diet!

now dont get me wrong... i LOVE this music...
im so glad i discovered it, i never regret it, or wish that
i liked 'norma' music..

its just that now everything else is shit!

"when you could actually TALK TO FRIENDS about
music?!??!?!?!?!?!?! "

Yeah i can't do that anymore hahaha!!
I still listen to alot of "normal" music tho.....
But i have never been able to listen to comercial radio
without wanting to break it.

You know i feel the same way too. I use to play guitar
24/7. but now i try to figure out how the hell they make
music this way now...its sounds so much more
interesting...But then again, i still fire up my stack and
play out an entire Slayer set for myself when i wanna get
old school too

haha, i know exactly wot u mean!

but i listen to LOADS now. Someone said "your getting a bit
electronica now!", but i do actually listen to lots of
different music. Classical, punk, hip hop, rock,
electronica..... more more more. Radio is good if the
stations are good. Xfm over in the UK is quite good, quite
varied :-)

hehe, i can relate to you tho!

classic example:
i've got a MASSIVE winamp list, but i went thru removing all
the 'normal' music. I've put it all back now tho, and i feel
whole again!

"when you could actually TALK TO FRIENDS about
music?!??!?!?!?!?!?! "

this is one of the main reasons i hang here so much i think.

Aminal: To tell you the truth Ive always wanted to kill the
radio. There was never anything good on for me. Pop
society is a one track monster that will never die. Die
pop...

My dream radio station would be this!

Autechre
Aphex Twin
Squarepusher
Jega
Radiohead
Sigur Ros
Mogwai
Chicane

Over and over and over and over again.

ya, of course

classical music and jazz, for sure!
SOME rock... (jimi hendrix, pink floyd, radiohead, of
course)

a couple/few artists in most genres are good..
there's quality everywhere... but it still doesn't compare

i wonder if ill ever like 'norma' music the same way again..
EVER
probably not, i think

I like slow classical / woman or men chamber choirs. I hate
classical music that goes all over the place or big huge
sounding 300 member choirs. Turns me off. I like small
groups playing slow type stuff like Roman Catholic (but not
really) type singing. I don't know what its called. Ive
heard some very pretty and emotional stuff. Slow chamber
music as well gets me going :) I just wish I knew some
names. But I hear a good song when I hear it.

Jazz / improvised / experimental (guys making their horns do
things no normal horn would ever hope to go through (avant
garde type stuff). That kind of jazz turns me on.
Rumbuctious type jazz that goes all over the place almost at
random turns me on as well.

yeah...ive completely lost interest in most rock music
too..though lately ive been listening to bands like
stereolab and air quite a bit...though theyre not what you
could really call 'normal' music...but they will probably be
the closest i come to normal music again

ive been wondering lately...it seems when most people get
older...they listen to either the music they liked when they
were young...so i figured ill prolly still be listening to
this stuff when im old (which should be weird if i have
children/grandchildren heheh) but since this sort of music
progresses so much...i wonder if i will still listen to the
newer stuff...or will i be like most old people and go "all
this new stuff is crap! back in my day..we had real
music...like squarepusher!"

Just crank "You're Living All Over Me" by Dinosaur Jr to
clear that IDM haze.

Yeah, I have a lot of trouble being entertained by anything
that ISN'T far out there in the musical stratosphere, now...
straightforward guitars and chord progressions just don't do
it for me as much, although I'm still into lots of rock.

Thing I like most about electronic is the lack of lyrics to
tell you what the track is about... everyone has their own
ideas and visions when they hear a SAW2 track, for
instance... you could make up a video in your head. With
lyrics, you usually just picture what the singer is spelling
out in his words, and it's usually cringe worthy... I only
like probably 1% of all the lyrics I've ever heard.

I love the electronic music i listen to, but there's a
different time for all sorts of music for me, whether it be
philip glass or autechre or floyd or tori amos

I think that your overal musical experience is enhanced if
you listen to different music in different ways. Too much of
one thing can get very thin in the long run. It's all
relative so it's best to keep things balanced IMO

offline hannibal from United Kingdom on 2002-06-01 21:48 [#00245819]

the only criteria for listening to/ buying music for me is
whether it's quality or not. i mean, if it's electronic, it
has to be thoughtful (in terms of structure, sounds,
originality etc.)
if it's punk rock, then obviously it has to ROCK eg. mc5's
kick out the jams.

if pop music was quality, then id listen to that, but
nowadays it's usually just a rip off of something else.
procol harum's 'a whiter shade of pale'. now there's a pop
song.

I can listen to tons of "normal" music, Ive been listening
to this Autechre and AFX type sutff for years and it never
stopped me from listening to other music.... I could care
less, personally and in all honesty I have no idea what your
talking about Aminal.

finally ive admitted it

i don't really think the radio sucks - radio 1 has it's fair
share of good music. john peel plays a lot of quality -
excellent artists like autechre, boards and aphex have all
done sessions for his show. you sometimes have to sit
through something that is questionable though :)

there's also other occasional gems like the skam special the
other night, which was fantastiko..

offline REFLEX from Edmonton, Alberta (Canada) on 2002-06-01 23:02 [#00245884]

Yeah and in my city here we have shitloads of stations..
mostly suck though, but there is one at night that plays
weird electronic and ive heard boc, afx and autechre
there... and lots of great ambient and stuff... its really
cool.

Yes of course there are great radio shows , we got some good
ones in sweden to.
But i think aminal was more refering to the comercial radio
stations and programs that you are often forced to listen to
at work places etc.

the samples rather than the song if you know what i mean

I have a liking for hard rock like Tool and System of a
Down, but they feel like guilty pleasures... inferior to the
mind blowing brilliance of Autechre and those other
pretentious wankers.

Classic rock, though... I'll ALWAYS love that stuff more
than anything. Beatles, Stones, Who, Kinks, Beach Boys,
Zeppelin, Doors, Velvets, etc...
