ive been messing with granulizing programs lately (analog x granulab and fruityloops granulizer) and im coming to the conclusion that autechre has gotten into granulizing software in recent years showing up seemingly on lp5 confield and gantz graf. i could be completely wrong they might find other means of making those kinds of sounds but the only way ive ever come close to the sounds they have is with that kind of software.

http://www.analogx.com/welcome.htm you can get granulab there for free. its not amazing it just tweaks sounds in interesting ways but be careful it has a tendency to crash. there are other good programs on there too like the wav vocoder.
you can get fruityloops 3.4 on soulseek for free. just do a search for soulseek software and download it. granulizer is in fruityloops.

i would assume they also use fractal music programs sometimes which you can also find for free. ive never really tried them much but im told they make completely random midi patterns using math that you feed it or just number sequences and somehow in the end the pattern makes sense even though it doesnt.. :) so im told.
