came up yesterday in Band Class... Someone asked the band teacher why he called the songs we were playing "pieces" and now songs. He said that he only calls things with WORDS songs. Does that mean we should call Aphex Twin's stuff pieces? and not songs?
or tracks? or what. he made a point on that too, that Tracks are just recorded bits of music, not full ones, but music, nonetheless.
hmm....

Its just the way people want to say it. I call classical works of music "pieces" for some reason. And I call rock or rap songs or what not "songs" and I usually call electronic stuff "Tracks". Dont ask me why, and its not all the time here and there I change them without thinking.

i think we should call some of his music pieces. like a select few of the tracks off of ICBYD, SAW2, RDJ, Druqks, ect...
but, some of his stuff doesn't deserve such an honor.

I think they both should be considered "pieces".
Speaking of Philip Glass, sort of, does anyone else like his other stuff? I've got Glassworks and Songs From the Trilogy, both of which are quite good. He's got a lot of material released, so I haven't heard most of it, but what I have heard is phenomenal.

"pieces" sounds too pretentious, "songs" is fine.

I use the term ''tracks''... since getting into electronic music, it doesn't feel right to call them ''songs'' if they don't have any lyrics... tracks sounds good.

I'd never call a Merzbow track as a "song". I think a song is music with an easily recognisable melody. A "piece" has a more complex musical structure and "track" is a more technical indication IMHO

I think "piece" is the most vague, and thus most versatile. it makes me think of Reese's Pieces though.

I've never used "piece" to describe classical music. There are several terms to describe exactly what you want like "aria" and "movement."
I'm only a classical newbie, though.
