NEW YORK (CNN) -- An early morning raid in Brooklyn netted more than two tons of cocaine Friday in what New York's police commissioner called the largest such seizure in five years.
Authorities impounded 4,277 pounds of the drug, with a street value estimated at $55 million, said Catherine Christian, assistant district attorney in the Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor.
Four people were taken into custody during the operation, which was conducted around the Gowanus Canal, an industrial waterway in Brooklyn. The federal Drug Enforcement Administration and New York police conducted the raid.
"This is a major blow against narcotic trafficking in New York City," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. "This seizure of 1,942 kilos is the biggest seizure, we're told, in at least five years and perhaps longer."
The four in custody -- identified as Jose Anzini and Hector Garcia-Chavez, from the borough of Queens, and Juan Carlos Martinez and Louis Cesar-Serratos from California -- are being held pending arraignment on a felony charge, Christian
