Girl/Boy Song

I was just listening to this track. It was one of the first
Aphex songs I ever heard a little over a year ago...

It's amazing, innit? The crazy drum programming... SO many
drill and bass tracks have the crazy beats there, but they
don't MEAN anything. The insanity in Girl/Boy Song just
seems to be so much more important, the soft side with the
strings and melodies (Girl)contrasting with the insane beats
(Boy). It's just THE drill and bass song, as far as I'm
concerned. It's so much more genuine or something... can't
put my finger on it, the track just feels flawless for what
it is. I don't think it's ever been equalled by any other
''drill'' track.

It's one of the better known Aphex tracks, which is not
necessarily a good thing for this amazing work of art...

it seems to mystify RDJ even more, which is sweet.

I love this song, I think it was one of the first tracks I
heard that was "techno"

i loved liking at just cuz no one else did, then it grew on
me and I am posting on an Aphex mb, go plastic

I can't believe it. Ophecks that's exactly how I saw that
song too. The contrast. Incredible ain't it? It's
something for both sexes really.

theres some parts in it that are boyish and some that are
girlish

The beats may be sloppy and inferior to something
Squarepusher would do, but RDJ just has this magic touch...
this track is above anything Tom J could ever do, I think.

How do you make drill n bass anyway? I know you guys talked
about sequencing and all but does Tom make multiple strings
of drums and put them together? How does it work?

I think Rich goes for emotion while Tom goes for complexity.

I don't think it's too hard to make drill and bass... but
it's hard to make GOOD drill and bass, beats that stand out.
Just speed up the BPM and go crazy!

Ophecks or anyone: what BPM do you use if you've made Drill
n bass? Higher than 200?

With FruityLoops, I basically just filled up every single
note on the thing with a beat of some kind... layers and
layes of different drum tracks... different pitches and
everything... copied the loop and then slightly altered it
to make NEW crazy beats that fit in with the previous
loops...

As for the BPM... I don't think I fiddled around with it,
just left it as the standard. Speeding it up or slowing it
down AFTER making my beats yielded some cool results... some
sounded better faster, some slower... I dunno, just
experiment! Drill and bass is deceptively simple, really!

I know Aphex twin thanks to this song.
A girl in my class put on this tape with the rdj album, and
when the girl/boy song started,I actually started listening
to the tape.
What was that crazy song with those beautiful strings and
those wacko beats?
I asked her the same day if I could borrow that tape ,and
the rest,.. is history.....
