"English Footballer Owen Hargreaves' family have recieved
death threats and hate mail after a Canadian media campaign
against them for encouraging their Canadian born son to opt
to play for England instead of Canada.
Hargreaves moved to Europe aged 16 to play in Germany,
after being rejected from the Canadian Under17 academy. His
dream was always to play for his Fathers home country,
England, so when he blossomed at Bayern Munich last season,
and The England coach Sven Goran Eriksson called to say he
wanted to select the player, young Owen had fulfilled a
dream. He should star in this years world cup, but the
treatment meted out on the Hargreaves family back in Calgary
by a venomous media campaign accusing them of being traitors
to Owens' country of birth, could yet take the gloss off the
young mans amazing acievement ."

Are all Canadians this crap ?
and do they even have a team WORTH playing for ?

idiots...

Canadians don't give a shit about soccer (football)

I don't understand how some people get so obsesive and
furious over such trivial sports developments, especially
with soccer, fuckin hooligans kill each other over it, for
fucks sake!

offline marlowe from Antarctica on 2002-05-25 22:23 [#00234903]
Points: 24578 Status: Lurker

no they dont -- they do it for the violence - the soccer is
just a by-product -- in a programme i saw on tV, the
hooligans from opposing teams would call each other on the
cellphones arranging to meet after the match for a brawl --
and then after that, they commented how the other side were
a decent bunch of fighters

offline corngrower from the fertile grounds of Iowa, w (United States) on 2002-05-25 22:25 [#00234904]
Points: 4404 Status: Lurker

I also saw a program where the hooligans charged the other
sides fans at half, and in the panic of the masses, a
protection barrier was broken and over a dozen people were
killed

yes, but its not BECAUSE of the sport itself... the game is
used as an outlet

offline corngrower from the fertile grounds of Iowa, w (United States) on 2002-05-25 22:32 [#00234911]

yes, it's not BECAUSE of the sport, its OVER the sport, as I
said

? most of the time, they aren't even watching the match --
after all, they are too busy heckling and chanting and
throwing "missiles" -- that is the case in the UK, anyways

About the hockey is a real mans sport line.

I am a young male canadian and I prefer usa football and
basketball over hockey anyday.

yeah corngrower, marlowe is right, the hooliganism that
surrounds football, at least in the Uk, is just people
wanting to fight and using football as an excuse. They said
it themselves. These guys don't wear football strips and
they aren't any more fanatical about their team than other
fans.....the firms in england are all linked to organised
crime too
