(this isn't relating to me personally, just curiosity) to play a song from an artist/artists in a movie that you've filmed...you do need to get permission right? yeah this seems very necessary. but how does it work? do you contact their management? offer them money? i need knowledge of this NO ONE THAT I KNOW PHYSICALLY FULLY KNOWS

You prolly contact their record label, and they will put you in touch with whomever you need to get persmission. Label love exposure from movie. it pushes units, the MOST IMPORTANT PART OF MUSIC>>>>>>>SELLING!
n e way, lots of times directors know musicians, and they have singers or bands make music just for the film, a la Marylin Manson cut like 6 tracks for Resident Evil. Or you get Phillip Glass to blow up for the Truman Show, not sure how that works though
PUSH UNITS.......ugh

You do have to pay whatever the guild of musicians is (can't remember their name) for everything you use.
