I'm behind a firewall at work. I can access any page on the
internet but I can't uses P2P programs like soulseek, WinMX
etc. Anyone know a way around this? I've tried using a HTTP
Tunnel program but fuck all happened. I'm using Win2K as
well.

Impossible to tell without knowing how your firewall is set
up, but generally it just won't work. That's what the
firewall's for ...

When I say "won't work" I mean you won't have full
bi-directional communication (people won't be able to upload
from you.) Sometimes you can still download ...

Can't even get that. I know bugger all about Firewalls and
such like. Any good internet resources so I can learn more?

Soulseek won't work beyond a firewall at all...it says in
the FAQ...

As for other P2P stuff, you'll need to read the docs and see
what it requires...thet generally need to open some "ports"
referred to by a number...say port 1000,1002 & 1003 for
example...

The firewall works by blocking certain ports so you'd need
acess to it to tell it not the block the ports you need...

I'm behind a Firewall as well...it sucks for P2P and I can't
even get at the thing (even tho I run the bloody website for
em etc...)..

There is a decent explanation here (look at the
3rd entry). If you search around a bit I'm sure you can find
more info.

at work huh? if ur not on a lan, thats connected to a
firewall, then you might have some hope...if it's a software
firewall, you can turn it off, if it's a hardware...then u
might have to date ur manager to get him to turn it off., or
set the properties for u to dl...

Well I'm fucked then. I'm on a LAN it must be a hardware
firewall and I have a homophobic boss who keeps going on
about homosexuals at his parish and how it disgusts him.

there has to be a way....maybe you could bring ur own phone
cords from home and some how manually connect ur comp to the
server w/o having it go through the firewall...

or if you wanna do 56k, just plug ur phone into the
modem...

there HAS to be a way!

Yes, I've noticed a correlation between homophobia and
hatred of p2p networks as well.

marlowe: yes

Perhaps they are a little confused over what the P means in
P2P...;)...

Zonealarm is like a personal software firewall...more to
keep others from coming into your machine than keeping you
locked out...

So yeah, soulseek, Kazaa will work fine with that....my
girlf had it on her machine and it asked whether she wanted
to allow SS to connect or not; having answered Y once it
doesn't ask again...

just a minor correction, but soulseek basically does work
from behind a firewall or NAT. if any client fails forming a
connection to another client, it asks it to try and connect
to it instead through the server. this means you won't be
able to search/browse/transfer with users who are also
firewalled, but you should still be able to find what you're
looking for in most cases.

I've installed it and i can't even find a server. I've tried
all the the reccommended programs.

Nanotech: I could't use a 56k as they monitor the length of
phonecalls and where they are going. I want to use the LAN
as it is a bloody fast connection. I downloaded the Trial
version of Dreamweaver in 7 secs so for MP3's it would be
great.

Cheers for clarifying that...

Sounds like I need to give it another go...I soooooooooo
hope it works...we've got the smoothest connection at
work....

(To those that don't know...NIR is the genius behind SS...so
MAJOR PROPS due...)..
