77 style punk, indie, NIN and Tool. "IDM" has in a way
blured out the effect that old guitars had on me.

before i really got into idm in late 1997 i listened to a
lot of nin, tool, radiohead, dj shadow, portishead, wu-tang
clan, as far as what i STILL listen to. as to what i don't
listen to now that i used to listen to then: live, reel big
fish, orbital, smashing pumpkins, dave matthews band.

there was a period about 3 years ago when my CD player was
broken and I'd listen to The Joshua Tree on tape every night
for about 3 months. I can still listen to that album and
enjoy it even after that excess.
When I was 13 I used to listen to Definitely Maybe all day
as well.
I still enjoy the things I used to listen to before IDM
"rocked my world" just not as much as the stuff I listen to
now: Venetian Snares, AFX, Underworld, Squarepusher, Boards,
Atom Heart.

my progression through music starting at age 12.
dj jazzy jeff and the fresh prince, and other rap i cant
even remember the name of.
then i got into billy joel and rem actually :)
then i descovered my sisters guns and roses and motley crew
cds
then i descovered nirvana and became completely obsessive
over them. so i read up on all the bands they approved of
and got into all those bands: sonic youth, mudhoney,
melvins...
then i got into hardcore/punk stuff that no one would know.
then i got into skinny puppy and nin and such.
then i got into idm.

this bob is in 4 quarters of uneven amounts....my maid
listening is and always was Big Beat...in second place the
new discovery for me, IDM...and in 3rd hip hop, tho i i
prefer 'listening' to 'buying' if u get that....the vestigal
last quarter DnB is flailing due to the recent
aforementioned Drill n bass discovery (see point 2)....the
original sector concerning rock/pop has all but gone, there
being only what experts call 'obscuro' receiving my interest
now.
i hope that cleared things up.

I hate the term IDM. I don't even consider myself an IDM
fan. I'm a metalhead. I'm here just to fight.

Are we talking Menswear etc here Ceri? I recently bought a
copy of their deleted album for a friend. He proceded to
play it in my presence once I gave it to him. Bad, bad
mistake.

I agree with whoever said listening to IDM didn't narrow
their musical taste down.. It certainly didn't for me.

The only reason I really, really got into the Twin was
because of Radiohead. I'm still into them and await their
new album.

Besides Radiohead (and surrounding influences i.e: REM, The
pixies, sigur ros, Bjork etc..) I also listen to Jazz,
obviously, and still do.

Classical music is there too..

Hi there, punk, so your pretty new to this IDM shit then.
Perhaps your input to the debate on the thread discussing
whether AFX is better than Autechre could be vital.

before the electronica scene hit me with a big boom, i was
listening to a lot of tori amos, early bjork (sugarcubes),
early psychedelic pink floyd and some of the hi quality
up&coming trip-hop stuff that was around back in the day
(portishead, tricky, massive attack etc.)

Does " intelligent dance music" imply that you have to be
intelligent not only to make it but also to dance to it ?

I think so. Its an incredibly elitist term if you ask me. I
believe the ignorant, servile masses would like this music
if only they'd drag themselves away from the mindless fodder
that they're spoon-fed.
