Techie CPU Question

I was going to buy this motherboard

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c
2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=31608&PX_Session=45
ad8303a32b86effea140f4ad4b6509

for an XP2000+, but the mobo spec says "supporting frontside
bus (FSB) speeds up to 100/133 MHz"

The XP2000+ is a "AMD ATHLON-XP2000+Socket A 266MHz FSB
Processor "

does this mean the CPU's frontside bus is too fast for it?
cos it said it 'supports a full range of AMD Athlons'

Sockpuppet Bill Gates says: "There's nothing wrong with
WINDOWS that's for sure."

"does this mean the CPU's frontside bus is too fast for
it?"

Yes, I think so. Remember an 'Athlon' is something different
than an 'Athlon XP' I don't think it'll work properly on
this mb. And if it works, it won't work optimally.

yes, you need a board that supports 266mhz bus

this one
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c
2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=25857

is the one below and supports an FSB up to 266mhz but I
don't know if it'll support an XP2000+, any ideas?

Yes, I think that's a better choice

I've decided on an MSI one, looks overall better (if a bit
more $$$)

I think it's always a good idea to buy the MB and CPU
together if pos...it can be a bit of a minefield and it's
easy to end up with a combo that works but isn't using the
CPU features to the max...

MSI rules!Buy MSI! I have K7T-Turbo R Limited Edition in my
computer and An regular K7T-Turbo in my other computer! They
totally rock! And you can always underclock the FSB to what
you want. Congrads on the new PC, gonna probably upgrade to
an XP 2002+ here soon, what kind of video card you runnin?

This is what I ordered
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c
2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=30290

Its FSB is 200/266MHz anyway so I don't need to do anything,
but surely underclocking another would have made it slower?

I've jusr ordered a cheap video card since I don't play
games

I'm a bit stuck on what kind of HDD will work with the mobo,
it says Ultra DMA 100....is that anything special? I was
looking at a 740DX Hard Disk Drive 80GB UIDE133.....will it
not run cos its 133 or UIDE?

offline Ctrl Alt Del from Ft. Worth (United States) on 2002-05-18 01:14 [#00224279]
Points: 2190 Status: Lurker

Ok,

UDMA 100 = data transfer @ 100MBs/sec,
Its not special, just how the HD transfers data to the rest
of the system.

UIDE133 = ultra IDE, data transfer @ 133Mbs/sec.

I have an EIDE HD, enhanced IDE.

It will work, just that you wont get a 133MBs connection,
just a 100MBs connection. It supports IDE so that shouldnt
be a problem unless the HD is really new and the mobo is
really old, because the IDE should be universal with all
types of it. In plain english, it should work, just not at
its full capacity.

IMPORTANT!: DO NOT, DO NOT, have your HD plugged into an IDE
chain with anything else but another HD of equal or greater
data transfer! Becuase most IDE devices except for mid to
high level hard drives run at 66MBs/sec or below, therefore
slowing your hard drive down to that speed instead of
100MBs+! There should be 2 IDE ports on the mobo, plug your
HD into slot one using a high speed IDE cable that will meet
the data transfer of your hard drive! Then you plug your
CD-ROMS, etc. into slot 2.

Its good that your system runs at max FSB, which is the
speed at which the CPU communicates with everything else.

And yes, underclocking would make it slower, but its slower
FSB or nothing at all, your choice.

Im a big PC gamer so I have a GeForce 3 Ti 500 now dated by
the highest model GeForce 4.

Whew!

As for mobos, buy MSI! Dont buy Epox or Gigabyte.Abit and
Ases are also top brands too.

And if your networking and have a broadband connection, buy
a Linksys Cable/DSL router! Best networking buy ever!

I am such a geek.

Cheers for the tips, have a read of this review of the board
I ordered..

http://www.hardocp.com/reviews/mainboards/msi/k7n420pro/

its got loadsa onboard thing such as network port and sound
etc...does this mean I don't need to buy a network card (i'm
going to connect it to the network in the house)? If I don't
that'd be pretty useful.

Also, its going on about the graphics of the chipset...do I
even need a graphics card? surely I do..or is even this
integrated?

nighty night

Oh yea, probably should have mentioned that as well, go to
Tom's hardware! Thier overclocking guide is second to none.

Your network card is built in, no need to worry about that,
ive got hundreds of them along with about 6 extra old PCs,
about 10 hard drives, 4 CD-ROMS, a couple floppy, mountains
of cables, a spare DSL modem, hundreds of graphics cards,
mice, etc. I have just about anything needed to build 5 or
more computers. From what I can tell The graphics card is
integrated, but built in ones are usually crappy and have no
more than 8MB of memory. Dont even think about doing any
thing 3D with one of those under the hood.

Hehe, that would be the first thing I would buy would be a
graphics card, of course, your talking to a guy who went out
and spent triple his budget and got everything top notch.

My system:
AMD Athlon Thunderbird @ 1.2 GHZ
MSI K7T-Turbo motherboard with ATA-100raid
Leadtek Winfast Geforce 3 Ti 500
Built in sound(soon to be Audigity Platinum)
EPO Technologies 16x DVD-ROM
QPS QUE! CD-RW 24x10x40
56x CD-ROM
128MB of memory
D-Link 10/100MB network card
17" Apple Macintosh monitor(yes, mac monitors will run on
PCs)

Sound System;
JVC 4VR-5446 stereo reciever
Klipsch Kg4s
KLH 9915
Sanyo SS-540s
Coral Audio Corp. BX-1001s
Optimus 100 disc CD player.

Network:
Efficient Neworks Speed Stream 5360 DSL modem
Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL router w/ 4 port 10/100 switch
Farallon Fast Starlet 10/100 8 port hub
D-Link DSS-5+ Switch 2 10/100 switch
D-Link 10 hub.

Thats what it takes to network:
5 PCs
1 Linux box
3 Macs

I also have a very cool MDI SCSI CD-ROM server with eight
12x CD drives, I want to code a program that will let me mix
all 8 at once!

B3n i would recommend gettin an ASUS mother board.
i am not sure if this is true with other motherboards but
with asus, you will always be able to upgrade the processor
to any AMD processor. because they're all compatible.
anyway, i always go asus and have never had problems
upgrading AMD processors.
ROCK ON!!

AMD= god of CPUs
Ive heard ASUS is really good for overclocking.

Well I think Asus only make boards with a VIA chipset, which
I can't get because of problems with pro soundcards.

I also don't want to overclock, and I don't play games so
its not important.

But thanks anyway

266 = 2 x 133
so this MB is ok for you
no MB upto now really works on 266
Intel P4 is 4 x 100 = 400 or 4 x 133 = 533
for example

and yes, Asus is ok
