A set of samples that are assigned to keys so you can play the sample at different pitches or to create a drumset. a soundfont also contains parameters to let the samplingengine know how to play the sample(where the loops are, envelopesettings, etc) So you can play a soundfont like a musical instrument with the keyboard or sequence it with a sequencer.
