"walk on by" by isaac hayes. discuss. personally i can name
VERY few compositions that come anywhere close to this
amazing piece of music.

no one? isaac hayes is a brilliant and completely underrated
composer. i challenge anyone to listen to "walk on by" in
all of its 12 minutes of genius and refute my claim. go
ahead and put it up against any song; it'll meet it and most
likely blow it away.

i like "walk on by" cover version by the stranglers

Clubbed to Death by Rob Dougan is the greatest piece of
music ever. IMNSHO.

Marlowe, did you read my "this is irritating" thread?

For the heads up, I will give you a heads up to paul simon's
"Diamonds on the soles of her shoes." It is one of my
favorite pieces. Are you surprised I didn't recommend Pat
Metheny...? Maybe next time.

Titsworth: Sorry...I cant come up with a better one ;=)

I just love that song!!! one of the best songs ever, theres
made like 50 hip hop tracks out of that one. The original is
still the best one tho.

Have u heard Wu Tangs version, very uncreative imo they just
took the beat (u got to chop that to pieces n make something
orginal out of it me think)....Ghost and RZA still ripped it
tho (most people hate the Ghost crying on that track but I
actually like it).

So im afraid I cant challenge u Tits...I cant come up with a
stronger track (Isaac got so much influence on everyone whos
nvolved with hip hop n musci in general).

Isaac Hayes is a amazing and very underrated composer imo.
He got a nice voice too just peep South Park ;)

He made some of the nicest soul pieces in history. DAM!!! he
made some GREAT IMPACT!!!!

I think the production is his strongest side tho, I still
love his voice but theres some brothers with better voice
like Ottis Redding, Marvin Gaye etc

SHAFT!!!!!

i prefer hayes' voice to gaye (not exactly the same style
tho). but yea, isaac hayes: incredible voice (singing and
voice acting), great arranger, composer, and producer. he's
just one of the most important and influential musicians of
our time, without a doubt.

as for the wu joint, i love it - very passionate performance
from the clan, perhaps the highlight of the w album. at
first i hated on it cos rza really didn't do anything with
the sample except loop it, but it's almost a sacred song, i
can't imagine it being remixed really. and they made up for
the lack of creativity by having hayes get on it and sing
some new stuff. get the jelly out of your spine, cobwebs out
of your mind!

i do love walk on by dearly, however, i really
think the look of love eclipses it.

furthermore, i think the dead presidents soundtrack
is one of the best soundtracks ever

<3 <3 <3

Yeah. The way it builds and builds and builds and the
wocka-wocka guitar, and the monologue at the start and the
cool guitar riff thing that reminds me a little bit of
Maggot Brain by Funkadelic and GODDAMMIT EVERYONE SHOULD OWN
THIS TRACK. Plus it's one of the coolest album covers ever.

ahem.

how 8 degrees of separation work with that movie and
SCARFACE!!?!?!?!??

keep trying!

offline Dozier from United States on 2003-10-19 21:19 [#00909531]

!!

yes, it is fargo. i guess the scarface
thing just hurt rather than helped.

now you can guess what the link is or i suppose i could just
tell you. (it's not a very substantial link in all honesty)

Love this song... there are no good isaac hayes collections
out there..

dead presidents vol1/2?

I absolutely looooathe that "I can't go to sleep" song.. so
goddamn lazy .. and sloppy.. I give rza no credit for that.
I hat those late-era screaming/crying styles that rza and
ghost got into there... that song had been sampled too many
times (and that particular section, for that matter) for
that to be considered a great work .. the whole W thing was
a disaster..

but yeah. I love "Walk on By".. he has a lot of great songs

I've only seen the movie once O_o

I just thought snow (and more importantly cooooold cos
tonight is the first properly cold night of autumn
here) and then it was the first thing popped into my head.

personally I think
Bobby Womack's "Across 110th Street" is the most amazing
song, R'n'B Soul, what ever you wanna call it. So lush and
deep. Incredible arrangement and orchestration.

haven't heard the Isaac Hayes song... but the best piece of
music as far as I'M concerned, and this is only my humble
opinion, is Passion by Peter Gabriel... I sound like a
broken record probably, but nothing comes close to that for
me in terms of quality of music, melody, percussion,
emotional response, and visual quality... it just works on
so many levels for me, always takes me away to some desert
landscape, and drags me through a whole spectrum of emotions
finally ending in a hopeful uplifting way... nothing beats
it in my mind!!

and for people who haven't heard it, don't be put off just
because it's by Peter Gabriel... you don't have to like his
poppy stuff to like this... this is totally different from
anything (well, except The Long Walk Home released last
year) that he has done... it's very much like an electronic
album, with lots of synths and great percussion, but the
percussion is more organic and ethnic to the middle eastern
countries the music is trying to convey... and there are
vocals, but no words really...

it's just great music... my favorite album!

for me the greatest album of the 20th century is Marvin
Gaye "Here, My Dear"
key tracks "when did you stop
loving me..." "anger" "annas song" "is that enough" and
"time to get it together"

the story behind the album just adds to the whole vibe of
the album. he's just so bitter and pissed off about anna
gordy. a very emotional album.

actually, its radiohead - lucky for me, but to each his own.
