I saw ot twice at the cinema at the time, I thought it was good then. I'd have to watch it again. I think I used to have the Maurice Jarre soundtrack. I will revisit it all for the spooky season.

i watched jacobs ladder today. enjoyable atmos and scenery and most of it looks pretty handsome. some interesting moments and mood but wouldnt go as far as calling it tension. typical 'is he crazy or is there more to it' sort of plot pace with developments that slowly and predictably paint the picture. body horror flashups and shudderhead moments would have been more fresh in 1990 but still fine. there are problems tho. its overly soppy in a way that you could probably only achieve by taking the damaged veteran cliches and artlessly mixing that with ghost all along/was all a dream routines. culkin as the angel kid looks wack specially whenever paired up with tim robbins corny facial dramatics. lot of horrors can have bad choices for child actors but the way he looks is so out of place with the overall visual tone. tim robbins is annoying thruout and helps to undermine the main character who is given a pretty flat script and doesnt really have much range or expand as a character. the whole thing serves itself like a quest to discover personal truths while opening up into larger conspiracy. it fails to be an adequate thriller on both scores cos the personal discovery bit is just 'ya feel bad after war and ur sons dead' most of which we pick up early on. the military conspiracy promised to unfold as the movie plays out but actually doesnt and the whole thing is just explained in a dialogue drop in the last 15 min by a character we hardly get to know. i think if it didnt have the fleshy stuff and a few twitchy francis bacon bits it wouldnt have been popular

Yeah I don't care for jacob's ladder.
Saw a great idea for a space horror b movie double feature, Lifeforce and Event Horizon.
this stash of BBC ghost stories is handy

it's handy cause there was a youtube crackdown and I haven't seen them all
very yes on that double feature, i'd end with Grave Encounters to lighten up, the ending goes a bit silly

thats totally wrong about smile but thats a whole thing and i wanna talk to you about that in a lil while.
for now i was thinking about grave encounters --> cropsey --> session 9 as the perfect asylum themed evening (i disagree about ending with g encounters because its lighter. gotta go from light to heavy in most cases imo)

wouldn't you agree Smile is The Grudge (2004) taking hits off the Candyman (1992) bong?
Looking forward to your Nietzschean-tragic justification for ending on the downbeat nihilist 9.

Communion was the second feature, the first feature was Swallowed, which was all right but we were expecting body horror and it’s more like a torture flick. It’s got semi-consensual fisting out of necessity though.

it is an edge case but it is scary in the beginning and Walken is having so much fun
Mothman is more serious. Both have an odd new age vibe
I don't love torture. I've come to appreciate Martyrs by thinking about it over the years and never seeing it again. the ending plays in my head free of charge.

Martyrs is one of the most offensively stupid films I've ever seen. Not quite as evil as like, a Gaspar Noé film, but still it's like a metalhead trying to make something deep and spiritual to justify scenes of young women being tortured. I wouldn't hate it so much if it was honest about being exploitation trash.

Yeah all of that is valid, I wouldn't recommend it or see it again. However I was discussing it and mulling it over recently and it can be read as a criticism of the strain of religion and culture that sees extreme suffering as a way to enlightenment, rather than the royal road to simple dehumanization and degradation. The madame offing herself after the flayed girl tells her "there's nothing" (I imagine she says this) is the film ending because it's also pointless. Not saying this reading justifies the film.
