I'm delighted you've picked a track off of Oversteps which I
think gets... _overlooked. To me it's Amber II, and I know
that'll upset some people, probably Sean and Rob as well. I
like this track, and the whole album, and Move often a lot.

Autechre aren't unique in this regard but they've probably
done it to me more in that I can remember the exact time I
*got* a particular track.

Today I like Mirrage as it sounds like old 50s, 60s
sci fi film background music. Accidently have two or three
versions of it playing at the same time out of synch - New
Ae album.

all end
dial
sim gishel
lentic catachresis
surripere
nuane
dael
pro radii
arch carrier
zeiss contarex

top 10 right now but could easily do a top 100 and the
quality wouldn't budge much.

everyone sleeps on Dial.

Gantz Graf comes out in 2002 with accompanying video. Yeah,
it goes hard. Actually taking what they did with Confield
pushing it a bit further (this was the last time they did
this imo, everything else post confield has been at a high
quality plateau, including draft).

You listen to that a few times and then Cap.IV catches your
attention. Crazy tiny squiggly sounds, BPM going out of
control.

Meanwhile, you've listened to dial once or twice but might
usually skip it in between GG and cap.iv.

One day maybe dial comes on in the car, all the levels are
just right.

You start to hear what they're doing with their SNARES
around 2:15 and for the rest of the track. These SNARES,
dog. And all of these little vocal freak out snippets come
out of the woodwork, and they go off around 3:26 into one of
the coolest repeating loops they've ever done. Love Dial.

Y'all may have slept on Dial, me no. I was Dial from the
get-go. True Autechre fans knew straight away the Gantz Graf
was there as a bright shiny thing for the easily distracted,
the casual Ae fan, the sort of people that actually voted
for Warp 20. Dial sorts the wheat from the chaff. The only
better track of theirs, out of all their material, is 19
Headaches.

Yes Dial is a grower that once you “get” never sounds
the same again.

I’ll go for some not mentioned yet. And from albums I
maybe wouldn’t normally pick from. Also giving whole
albums is cheating.

Nth dafuseder.b. (Great reworking of an oversteps track I
forget the name of) you can really feel that “falling off
a cliff foreard” feeling.

Theswere: this has proper avant guarde classical vibes.
Melody i often get stuck in my head, and those chords!
Makes me think of a short story by Yoshiharu Tsuge aptly
called The Sewer.

Foldfree casual: those classical vibes gone bonkers again.
So beautiful Dignified.

Latentcall: such good fun, relentless, grooves so well!

13x0 step: bits of Latentcall
… tuinorizn.. Doppler effect twin horizons driving

Soz, big I’ll link em later if necessary

(Nth dafuseder.b. = rmx of d-sho qub on oversteps)

all picks in this thread are great. ae just doesn't make bad
music (bqbqbbqbq on nts 1 not withstanding...)

I've been trying to think of ANY musical artist that has
been this consistently good for this long. Anyone have
another name? Most artists are re-treading old ground 10 or
15 years on. Even afx hasn't budged much in his sound since
analord, with less and less standout moments each release.

I think Ae made "progression" a bit redundant. Maybe their
music sounds like generative music, but the way they
preempted makes that... redundant.... I don't know. I don't
always love what they do but I know I like it.

Oversteps

Back in the day I stopped listening to new Autechre releases
after Quaristice, I think because Untilted and Quaristice
felt a wee underwelming back then. After Confield. Relevant
context is I discovered Autechre on this board, after I got
on the board for Aphex Twin (I discovered Drukqs through
those little snippets if the songs. I think the snippet of
Vordhosbn might have been better than the full song!)

And then Confield came out and that was, like, a big
cultural moment for the board and me.

After that, Untilted sounded very dry. And Quaristice was
also dry, though also it had some cool ambient tracks. I
listened back to the album the other day and recognized I'd
listened to Paralel Suns a bunch. Still love that one. Bit
yeah, I understand why I felt the way I did back then.

Anyway, I couldn't be bothered with new releases after that.
Also I got older and I stopped being so much into music.
Probably also because I stopped making it. I'd played in a
band and wrote music for that, after the band stopped, I
made electronic music for, I don't know, a good 5 years?

I did so little with music, I didn't even set up my music
stuff after moving, eight years ago. I kept that stuff in
boxes, until I unpacked the boxes during Covid (only 3 boxes
left now!). I did however get good headphones, for noise
canceling first and foremost, but it were good headphones
(Senheiser) so I started to listen a bit again.

Trevor Scott, I remember, Astroworld. And I listened back
some guitar based I used to listen. And Slipknot, which I
used to think was lame, while listening to contemporary Nu
metal, like Korn and Deftones (so I used to be stupid and
stubborn; still am, of course, but also used to).

And at some point I decided I should listen newer Autechre
relaeses. I don't know how I got to that: I don't really
think I listened much IDM at this point, I probably listened
more commercial, dance stuff. Maybe I just wanted to listen
some Autechre. But anyway, the next album in line, after
Quaristice, w

But anyway, the next album in line, after Quaristice, was
Oversteps.

I really got into that album, Oversteps. And then I did what
I'd done with other artists as well: stop at that album
because "it can't get any better than this". (Or I remember
I also did this with Meshuggah, coming to the album
Nothing.)

That was some 5 years ago. Recently I saw Autechre live. So
now I'm inspired to finally move on to newer releases: I've
bought Exai, but I find it kind of hard to get into such a
long album: it's the length of two CD's, I think; to use
that old measurement of album length. And then there's this
album that's five discs (or six? Whatever). And Sign and the
remix album for that, that was released at the almost the
same time.

Pheewy.

So I'm mostly listening the old, familiair stuff. And mostly
to Oversteps.

through these fav tracks i can get into these pretty
hermetic albums, so thanks.

i guess i have to say i didn't like seeing ae live, because
i could hardly handle the paranoid, scary, sounds that were
going on in the mix. this is this, too, on this track. at
least there's not *also* beats going on

os veix3 on the other hand has really lovely sounds

i guess it can be hard listening to the track with the
percussive sounds being mixed so loud (but that's the charm
of the track). i'm not saying one sound is better than the
other

many of these sound too paranoid to me, too. i slept too
little and am a bit overstimulated, so can handle little
atm

i don't know nuane well. will use it to get into this album
more. (this one doesn't sound paranoid). i've always
listened more to EP7 than the album, for some reason. reason
probably being i like the opener of it, rpeg

all end i will def try as well. but yeah, it's an hour

Yeah paranoid is a pretty good way to describe some of
these.

I like my ae a bit paranoid, dark, and hip hoppy. Not all
those tracks are all three, but when they do manage it, it's
a real banger for me.

I could gush out like 5-6 more direct replies about all of
these tunes everyone mentioned, but I'm really enjoying what
everyone else has to say.

Roger describing such a fucked up track as Gantz Graf as a
shiny, easily digestible treat for the warp 20 masses made
me laugh out loud. And he's not even wrong in a very
specific context.

I signed up to this board in 2002 essentially to talk about
Autechre and it's still really my favorite thing. Like, I'll
take a new Autechre album over almost anything else in any
department, nerdy as that may be. It just really clicks with
me. Zero doubt about it, my favorite band.

did your move of ten come with the super secret japanese
bonus 11th track ClnChr?

Very alien little diddy, that. Not a discernable trance of
any human emotion, which I think is awesome and pretty
unique to autechre. Aliens rappin' at you.
