idiots discuss idiots

Under former CEO John Lansing, NPR made increasing
diversity, both of its staff and its audience, its "North
Star" mission. Berliner says in the essay that NPR failed to
consider broader diversity of viewpoint, noting, "In D.C.,
where NPR is headquartered and many of us live, I found 87
registered Democrats working in editorial positions and zero
Republicans."

Berliner cited audience estimates that suggested a
concurrent falloff in listening by Republicans.

this just me, but -- i grew up with WBUR. i have fond
memories of dad and i sitting at the dump but not unloading
anything because car talk is being so hilarious we are
literally tensed like vultures over the radio, like, yes,
what next

then during the pandemic -- late pandemic -- i got hardcore
into NPR again. thinking about it actually makes me want to
tune into marketplace again

being a bit drunk one night, smoking a zig on a bridge, some
lady is all, may i join you? and within a minute or two
we're into the episode of the thing with the garbage men in
NYC and

i am fantastic at accepting other points of view.
transgender? of course that's okay. now -- can we stop
wasting time and try and understand what's happening here
better? and i respect some catch-up airtime after only
pretty blonde white girls get on the news for being
kidnapped. even still.

however -- a year after the pandemic eased off, i'm outside
more. and John Lansing like... "another success story from a
business owner of color" and it got the point of -- are you
fucking kidding me. you are turning yourself into the joke
republicans think you are

i wrote this whole thread two years ago, about a very
similar NPR article. i am wicked liberal and open-minded and
even i feel annoyed you're wasting all the airtime on this
shit and i miss car talk.

how would i fix it? and not be an idiot; be less idiotic?
it's a fair question. and arguably much more difficult than
tearing something down. so

car talk guys were very boston. even hardcore accent. that's
not what i cared about. what i cared about was, like... they
were beyond hilarious. then longtime fans finally have a
car problem
and they have an excuse to call car
talk
and, well, we're huge fans calling car talk with a
car problem, and how do we be hilarious too? it's car talk
and it simply won't do to not be like this

and so one i remember in particular -- sitting at the
recycling section at the dump -- was a caller who had
purchased a honda del sol, whose previous owner had
"lowered" it. and i remember concluding the above; that this
woman and her family worked hard to think of a funny way to
describe the problem, and they succeeded: "you could catch
the bumper over a fat man's shadow" lol. and the answer is:
"alright. you call the previous owner. and i guarantee you.
he will have the original springs on his garage shelf, where
he put them after cutting down the aftermarket ones. and you
need them back and he will undoubtedly simply just give them
to you for free since he doesn't even remember they're still
on the shelf" lol. but also, they were uncannily correct
about this sort of thing

and the point is: how can you not be on board with all that?
then the audience gets into it enough to turn around and
elevate it themselves? and this is about cars and LOLs and
despite the white boy accent, there was something for
everyone in this, and that is why it worked.

i don't think lansing's problem is woke, though -- no,
instead, he's one of those "we need to target a different
market share" and "to do this we need incredibly narrow
content that will annoy everyone" and conservatives can eat
shit, fox news has been worse for 20 years

yes, that's it. it's the same as claiming the matrix as your
specific personal trip; refusing to leave it vague enough
for everyone to find something personal in it

except trans people are fighting for legitimacy. versus the
marketing [former] CEO idiot targeting a demographic
because, well, these numbers won't do. what about next
quarter?

and fuck off. go work at microsoft. this is NPR

I listen to NPR daily. It’s great radio

it can be. mostly i'm too busy at the moment... but back
when i wasn't, it very much had the feel of: "to determine
if this is any good or not, look up if the program has been
on the air for more than ten years" and if it has, it's
solid. if it hasn't, it's shit

this is just a quick metric, and there are exceptions
aplenty in either direction. and i'm just saying it because
it's another way of saying "alright, look. this is not
really about woke"

because you could replace all the tedious "urban" targeted
stuff with "programming about shoes" and i like shoes but
i'm not the sort to own more than a couple at a time and i
will listen to programs about shoes. a few times. then it's
like, "shoes again? fuck off"

so then you wind up saying, "successful business owner of
color segment again? fuck off" it's not about successful
business owners of color at all. it's more like someone
forcing you to eat nothing but pretzels. pretzels are a
wonder of nature, but you'll go mad after only a few days of
nothing but pretzels.

this is because some pinhead CEO brain decided NPR needed a
reboot, we need to target new listeners, etc. instead of
just, i dunno, doing what they used to do... shit that is
like [show about cars+LOLs] and there's no color in this at
all; it's for everyone. conservatives hated NPR because of
the live news that skewed against their worldview, but even
they like this shit too. even if they haven't discovered it
yet.

nope. instead, let's switch to a very narrow targeted thing
that will put half of america off. even if they are twats

this is why you need something like ~public~ radio. so CEO
twats can't faff about next quarter and destroy the good
shit. not sure what happened here really

I don’t think you listen to NPR much. Car talk was a great
show, btw. Word matters is pretty good too. Love 1A and
Fresh Air. Lots of people grew up on it, and losten to it
regardless of political affiliation.

Just because some rich idiots want to slander and crush NPR
doesnt make it bad

one night, as i was fast asleep, aphex twin ate all my
cereal and squarepusher broke my tascam ms-16. then they
drank all my goon and wandered out the basement door, of all
places, and left it wide open and now there are mice under
the water heater, and now everyone thinks i'm weird because
i don't like IDM anymore

I don’t think you listen to NPR much.

i mean, ok, sure, let's do this one

you are totally correct. this opinion is microwaved from,
perhaps, late 2022. when i did kind of stop. it was partly
the content, partly i only got into listening again because
walking was this thing where people either cross the street
or get mad at me for not crossing street and gtfo because
pandemic. and i got hooked again. and i am deeply fond of
it. and there was still some of that. but then there's all
this horseshit. and from there, i suppose, i throw my "10
years" metric under the bus. it's just me trying to describe
what i'm seeing in a succinct way. it could be more off than
i realize, even for late 2022. or it could be much better
now

but now i have this, i dunno, "i don't own a TV 2.0" thing
going on: i have wasted so much of my life "watching stuff"
and "listening to stuff"

and i don't mean music [on cans now ~ the faint - the
conductor] i mean stuff like NPR where it's like TV or
netflix and i have to either focus or GTFO no good. this
american life? fuck off tv; 99% of netflix. no arguments.
it's more about how, that's an old thing now. and boooo
nothing fills the void of some old shows lost; you're not
even trying

but yes. fuck off to watching shows. i haven't seen it. i
don't give a fuck. but if we're hanging out and you want to
watch a thing together? that's a bit anti-social to sit
there in the dark and watch a netflix episode but if you
really want; it'd be anti-social of me to refuse. and so it
is when people talk about watching stuff. this is more like,
not 2.0, but "I Don't Own A TV 4.20" where it's really... oh
you really want? sure. but on my own? that's like asking me
if i ever knit, or do cross-stitch. like: i could,
theoretically, i guess, but... sorry, urge never quite hits;
bless if it does it for you though

so keep NPR. however you want. i'm just sayin'. etc

You’re like manic and barely coherent. I’m guessing that
you’re not really well educated? Or a drop out at best.

Seriously, do some part time university studies. In-class.
It’ll help reform your mind and allow you to put some use
to your thoughts. I’d say first take a 101 course in
critical thinking, and then maybe a course in cultural
studies or communications. I’d suggest sociology but 1st
year sociology will probably have you arguing more with the
professor than you will be in critical thinking class. Just
remember it’s not about you. Take it in. Do your work.
Asses once completed.

irreverently insensitive.

It’s just that in the 34’ish years I’ve been chatting
online, i havent read anything like you for decades. You
kinda sound like an 18 year old version of me, but with more
drug induced brain damage.

the "urban demographic" here -- we're braming the twit CEO
