time signatures matter to those moving their feet, not just
to those twiddling knobs on a computer. Intelligent dance
music had a hidden clue in it all along. And i never noticed
it while thinking about compressors, midi interfaces and
low-pass filters..

Ok, here is some Track i recently made on my Ipad. It
doesn't fit into IDM Genre. The reason for this is because i
was learning some basic concepts of music theory, like
chords, scales, melody, counter melody etc.

Dorian Mode

is time signature discrete or continuous?

offline Monoid from one source all things depend on 2024-02-24 11:33 [#02632813]

Time signature is considered discrete. It specifies how many
beats are in each measure and what note value constitutes a
beat.

ok. so

A] what happens to music if we make time signature
continuous?

b) have you ever tried signing your time with your
non-dominant hand [to increase inter-hemisphere
entanglement]?

Notation would need to evolve to accommodate the continuous
change in rhythmic structure. The listening experience might
become more complex and potentially more engaging, as the
lack of a predictable rhythmic structure could lead to
unexpected shifts in tempo and ryrhm.

I can't play any musical instrument. I depend on computers
and music theory to compose something.

i don't think anything particularly interesting happens if
we make time signatures continuous? like it would mean the
music could be in an irrational number, is that what you
have in mind? i think our ear would just find the closest
rational approximation ... i don't know, i'm going to think
about it more

i've been listening to leftfield's Rhythm and Stealth like
crazy recently. i can't believe i didn't find this album
until, like, 2021

they draw so clearly. relevant here, 6/8 war. it's both the
shape of a fat cartoon bomb (if you have to ask... it's not
for you?) and the 6/8 has crossfades eating both sides
continuously for the 6/8 part

seems good for this thred any case. not sure how this track
could have worked as it do without an unusual time zig

re: nevermind discrete time signatures, we need
continuous time signatures

penrose tiling be like -- the pattern goes forever without
repeating. this means, if you're dropped somewhere into the
middle, you have no idea of telling what pattern you're in.

and yes, if we worked out a scheme with time signature that
evolved based on these patterns, oh... i have too many to
count, here: "it would be the most obnoxious musical concept
i've come up with in a while," or "but i'm not sure this is
relevant because i still have trouble making a coherent
concept out of this" or "it'd be almost as good as autechre"
and on but i think the winner is "...but it'd be nice if
anyone could actually hear what was happening when they
listened to it"

it's simpler to just turn quantize off, do everything
freehand, and turn in a subjective simulation of what you
feel this would be like, if the idea made any sense at all.

continuous time signatures. you heard about hearing about it
on xlt first

oh my lol. when autechre pulled their "you can't pull us
over for rave, because, technically, none of these beats
actually repeat" what formula would they have taken it to
court with? if i were to sit down and try and pull off the
same thing... penrose tiling?

Exaclty as it is!

Sound, as presented by subjectivity, made groove its king;
when making music it is our job to subordinate every
parameter to its will

online dariusgriffin from cool on 2024-05-16 17:39 [#02635466]

You know what's fun? Pitch and frequencies are a function of
time too. Music is all about time. It rules.

offline kei9 from Argentina on 2024-05-16 19:00 [#02635467]
Points: 425 Status: Lurker

Indeed! beat turns into 8bit racing game

Again it is subjectivity that presents to us pitch as
clearly distinct from rhythm, which makes pitch non
reducible to rhythm, even if the former emerges emerges from
the later, which is to say that; even if every harmonic
combination can be described in terms of rhythm the "axioms"
of harmony are still more meaningful or useful metaphors
than understanding their intervals as beats... or maybe
awesome melting harmonies can be made by modulating rhythms
and their speed
