definition circuit bending (v) ~

gingerly annoying 90s garage sale electronics
until they throw a tantrum like an exhausted child

DID YOU KNOW? you can circuit bend a dog
by tactically, gradually irritating it¹ more and more over
the course of ~20 minutes. by repeatedly poking dog.
poke

not hard. not enough to piss dog off. poke

...but hard enough that a latent sense of irritation begins
to build over the course of a few minutes. poke

dog is now getting a bit tense. poke

dog hasn't gotten mad the last seventeen times; why should
dog get mad at 18? the world is not supposed to be this
mutable. poke

dog is getting freaked out. what is this uncanny purgatory
between usual poles of dog mood?! dog has never had mixed
feelings before, and it is incredibly
disorienting

POKE

dog cannot take these strange vibes anymore. dog EXPLODES
WITH SOUND

arrooYAWrOWLowl [internally smashing dog keyboard in hed]

dog begins to spin around in circles, adding a leslie effect
to sound output, occasionally interrupted by darting off
towards th- WAIT NEVER MIND ARReiordhkjfg WOFF WOFfgjhk

emotion has been earthed.
...dog suddenly feels tired
dog sits down. dog farts

dog forgives you. just don't make a regular thing of this,
ok? if you try it again because you set the levels on your
sampler wrong dog will actually bite u

...and this is how you circuit bend² dog³. if you're
looking for something with more immediate results, xltronic
would recommend giving a talking parrot a thimbleful of
hooch⁴

¹ this is the dog's preferred gender pronoun, thank you for
asking

² remember never to poke the dog so much you get bitten;
this is like circuit bending something that's powered from
mains

³ husky dogs are a classic choice; the speak and spells of
dog circuit bending;

⁴ this will void the warranty on your parrot.

"circuit, noun [C] (CIRCLE)
something shaped like a circle"

*gif of dog dreaming and running into wall before waking
up*
its an imaginary gif, so it didnt really happen..
..or, did it?

Dogs are funny amazing and cool. Even the terrible ugly
little shitty ones at the dog parks prol arnt that bad,
I’m just opinionated.
When I go to the dog parks a few s days a week, even the pit
bulls are usually just huge pieces of meat and they are
fun.
There’s usually more people at the dog park I’d like to
have put down then the 3-4 legged creatures themselves.

right, not a dog person, but those critters become addictive
if you have em. sitted one for 2 weeks and missed him so
fast and the stuff he does.
anyway, i dont agree with 90% of dog owners and breeders,
but its way too early in the morning to get into this shit.

reacts

i tried this when i was approximately ten or eleven, once

dog and i were best buddies. yellow lab who, actually,
probably never would have bit me no matter what. she'd
definitely communicate though, if she was annoyed, but that
took quite a bit

anyways, i was the sort of child who, upon seeing someone's
dog fetch the paper, said, "i want a dog myself, so i can
train it to bark at salad" and i was asking my dad if this
was possible. he rightly got lost in "well, COULD a dog
actually distinguish salad?" rather than questioning the
validity of the idea in the first place. i miss him

anyways, i ran experiments on dog sometimes. i.e. ~ i can
poke her so she only just notices ["hey, what? oh you poked
me very very gently"] but what happens if i keep doing this?
and every time her attention wandered off after a very soft
poke, i poked her again and

trust me, that's how you circuit bend a dog. afterwards, i
thot: wow! that was freaking intense! but now that i've seen
what happened i love my dog and i'm never doing that again

so get your sampler levels right if you try this. because,
as a decent dog owner, i'd argue you are allowed to do this
precisely once

i'm waiting to get yelled at about the parrot thing too?

"anyways, i ran experiments on dog sometimes. i.e. ~ i can
poke her so she only just notices ["hey, what? oh you poked
me very very gently"] but what happens if i keep doing this?
"

It's more effort than it's worth reading a sentence written
in this fashion.

The content of the sentence, syntax aside, is also
lackluster.

you poked a dog in your childhood.

the real, actual raisin this point my thred'm, is we thot:

ha! circuit bending, its best practices, are like that time
i poked my dog every time her attention wandered until she
essentially had a psychedelic experience

i suppose it is actual advice, too. circuit bending: if you
go in hard you're liable to simply fry the more finnicky
bendable things. it's best to be very relaxed about it;
casually harass the circuit and try to feel how it reacts.
poke, poke. until you feel it starting to djhfgkdfg a little
when you go over there, and so you go closer, but with the
same gentle advance. then there's a bizarre moment where it
suddenly comes to life in a dervish and spews out all sort
of BZzzzrtAROOOoo and alright, let's mark that one with a
sharpie

plan out your panel layout in advance and drill all the
holes at once. the comparison to poking dogs breaks down
about here

thus concludes the point i wanted to make all along. i'm
simply realizing these things need a bit to breathe

if you do it right, there are literally hundreds of
thousands of dollars available for you, to research about
how "circuit bending is queering capitalism", if u think im
shitting u then pay attention.

yeah, circuit bending, modular, all that shit,
total fucking wank

get a £200 laptop and you can outdo that stuff by orders of
magnitude

"eurorack" ... what a load of shite, go down argos with your
dole money

ACTUALLY, all that 'live coding' bollocks, if u wanna blow
them out of the water it is really easy... i'm suprised no
one just does n* and random parameters, totally easy....
fuck em, total shite

1) at the end of the day i just want to make the things i
see or hear in my hed, and if i could get even a few $10k
units out of bending -- i'm interested

i've never sold garbage, i never will sell garbage. it will
be good shit. from there, as long as i am personally
satisfied it's mustard, i have no problem with absurdly
inflating the price because there are cultural reasons
someone will pay that much. nor do i have any problem with
dressing it up aesthetically somehow to hit the right
notes.

about where it's like "oh, fuck no, i'm out" is having to be
a talking head on youtube. riced out marketing says my issue
here is "discovery," whatever that means

2) here is my post on livecoding ~

here, working on brevity. four-word summary of
livecoding

livecoding, keywords: bushwick, cocaine

watching someone write computer code live to generate music,
or whatever. that, like, can we count the number of
obstacles in between you and the audience, impediments to
this actually being a moving form of art? that, like, i am a
software engineer, and this will actually ruin it for me
simply because they use a lot of functional programming
language shit i usually don't and i'm going to be standing
there in space and trying to adjust to the code i'm not used
to reading. then this is a live thing and you're expecting
people who are not even as bad as i am to follow along and
feel some sort of personal communication from it -- no, this
is just "hey mom, look at me" in front of your friends. i'm
open to other interpretations

much more interesting that... charles dickens wrote good
books to read, but no small part of the reason you know the
name is he'd show up and retell the book aloud in a shorter
way, dialed in for the house, and just blow the doors off of
the place. that we can split apart being a good storyteller
and having a good story to tell and you need both.
