BOOTY HAVEN

BOOTY HAVEN is capitalized because the mix is LOUD (and
the fees are financed as part of the loan).

i'll leave the gear on and maybe try for another version
tomorrow

I stand by what I said in the middle of the night; that’s
a good ep/full release and I’d buy a physical format, even
if it’s not on rephlex, skam or warp.

it would be something if i could afford tape, because
then... the whole process, down to vinyl, could be
completely free of being run through a computer at any
point. but i can't, and it goes from stereo out to computer,
and a physical release, why? i don't even have a working
turntable anymore

buy the bandcramp, perhaps, because then you can get it in
lossless and the difference between that and 128k matters
much more than physicality

and then, oh, should i stop there? because this is just...
remember i said, "ohh, i'm just going to upload stuff to
bandcramp as i record it to an undefined album; every now
and then hide the crap ones as bonus tracks [still there if
you buy it] and push out album" ??

that's what the purple bandcamp cover means

thanks, tho. i've not been feeling aphex's recent release of
analord 37; i want something with more action an explosions.
nevenen has you covered

oh, well, i liked syro. there were some chunky breaks on
there. the track -- is it called barcelona or was it just
played in barcelona -- like, yes, absolutely, this is good.
but you wouldn't blink if he said "oh yes that was an
analord track i lost behind the ottoman, i was vacuuming one
day and the DAT clogged it"

ok [searchy] rfc pt8

RFC, that stands for Request For Comment, ok:

absolutely the only thing i'm motivated to lift from this is
the echoing on the kick drum at the start. deplorable

the joke there is i've already stolen the rest, or at least
what is to my tastes
i'm really not sure of the right tone to discuss this.
sometimes i'm just amusing myself being a dick, but when i'm
like "yeah i'm on soulseek every other day trawling japanese
speedcore" i was dead serious -- it's not something i
planned or did to be ironic or some shit, it really was: "I
FUCKING LOVE THIS" and oh well i'm used to being a bit odd.
i did love syro

so -- big -- where were we? i was talking about a
ravewavedonk before i tempbanned myself for everyones' sake.
i promptly went back to the wavestation and went off on a
tangent making other stuff and i still haven't gotten around
to it, but it's a solid idea for whenever the strange fickle
machine at the back of my brain decides to vomit the patch
into the EX

meanwhile -- check out my wavestation ohh-oh patch in here;
beefy. a little T99 in that

LAZY_TITLE ~ i used to get in a mood and rearrange
everything every four months. but about all that's changed
since this is the digitakt went up onto the shelf right
behind it and the 303 is where it was now. and the
wavestation is behind me and the casio is off to my right.
and that's it, that's everything, no edits; i'm too lazy. if
anyone cares.

i've been so into the 303 that i've not been playing live
keys much. hmmmm

that i was just sitting in the corner by the fan and
stretching my back out, and oh, i have BOOTY HAVEN stuck in
my hea- oh, no, wait, that's the version with the different
notes i've been working on today. and i can hear it in my
hed. and, oh, what if i opened with the 303 and the
wavestation? that sounds good when i try it (in my head,
stretching my back) and then i'm listening to it (in my hed)
and yeah, actually, i should try moving the 303 up an octave
so it's more like in sharks and

it does kind of piss me off that i'm barely making it on a
consulting gig and now i should probably find another salary
thing, not have much time for music again. and i still won't
be able to afford a tape machine

i have a shorter answer, recycle: i am not going to press up
vinyl, because no one would buy it, because i'm not aphex.

when he puts out a good album, i have the decency to just
say, "wow, that's a good album" and be quiet about being
pissed off. but

did i listen to collapse? i'm actually not sure. again, this

is/was/will be/has been out. but i heard rfc pt8 and just.

it's because no one buys records from anyone except aphex
and maybe recycle is just trolling me to get me to blow a
bunch of cash i'll never recover in sales. how the fuck do i
do international shipping to belgium or some shit anyways?
i'm happier not knowing

beyond that, you can buy it in FLAC. i've been clear about
my methods and, i dunno, can we get sean booth to buy it and
say, "yes it actually does matter to get this in FLAC
instead of the 128kb preview stream" ?? or any independent
analysis from anyone that would be trusted by Real Heads

alright, i'll go... technical details

well, i had a fireface 800 once? and it sounded, like,
FFFFUUUcking good? then everything went to shit and i had to
sell it to some guy in russia on ebay?

now: coming out of a yamaha mixer's built-in USB, which
sounds... decent, really! but having had a fireface... yeah.
it ain't fucking that.

44100 because i don't want to fuck with sample rate
conversion. it's probably 24bit but i should double check

but then i'm going to the 128kb bandcramp generates and i'm
like "so what'd it do to my music this time" like a crabby
frank zappa. but about as best i can do is shake my head and
say "no, no, that's not as nice." so. bearing in mind the
limits of the equipment i have, yes, i feel it makes a
difference.

and i want tape because

a) i like to record all the levels really hot and it will
distort instead of brappa krak

b) in a world where, like, vinyl is unflinchingly pressed
from 128kb mp3s, what the fuck does vinyl mean anyways? that
this was not the point, but the way i work, write, record...
i just use the computer as a tape machine anyways?

the only part that will kill me is keeping track of physical
tapes. that is much easier on computer

tlder: i can fucking hear a difference between the 128kb
preview and lossless, and it's worth it. but having had to
sell off a fireface 800, i should note it's not like, that
good. because i can't afford shit like that. please buy my
album so i can get a tape machine, because it's actually a
better fit than the fireface

i really don't know shit about tape in a specifications
sense. 1" -- that's the good tape, right?

really, it's my understanding that you can get a 16 track
machine, one inch tape or whatever, reel to reel, and
everyone's always screaming at me to record stems instead of
just a mix and if you really really want me to that, 16
track tape is the only way i will bother. because it's a
natural extension of how i have things set up

and never mind. i'm just dodging work now anyways. i should
stop

an interview with mike paradinas about his juke music
records. something like, "...well he lost the fruityloops
project! it wouldn't have been out on vinyl otherwise!"

it's really a "nice to have" not some urgent goal, but it's
like... yes... it's all analog up to the computer anyways...
with tape... lots of badgering people to not bounce it...
entirely analog from the voltage in my faders to the
mastering guy yelling my shit is too loud it's bouncing
around

offline EpicMegatrax from Greatest Hits on 2023-07-06 00:36 [#02629043]

i mean, let's bury the whole arc with mike p calling my shit
"last-century music" in, i dunno, 2010 or some shit? i've
fixed that; it's less stilted now. i mean, it's funny, i
think all the DDR japanese speedcore i've been talking about
has some commonalities

but then going up as president of IDM labels and saying
"yeah we pressed this vinyl from a youtube rip" is like,
stop hitting yourself. why are you hitting yourself

that's an extreme example and i figure something planet mu
only resorts to for footwork release. i hope. but 90% of
people do it all on a laptop and the other 10% record their
analog to computers like i do and it goes through sixteen
more computers before vinyl and you've lost me what's the
point

it's probably bastardly annoying to actually try and... like
i said, badger people DO NOT FUCKING BOUNCE IT YOU'RE
RUINING IT
because it's how everyone does everything
now

but that's if anyone even cared that far. it would just suit
my workflow and the stuff on bandcramp would sound better,
i'd start to get into multitrack and overdubs

that, oh. say, miraculously, i have a tape machine and
enough free time to use it, and i manage to bludgeon it all
the way to vinyl, while having not only prevented anyone
from running it through a computer, but also taking care
people don't wantonly bounce it, as mentioned, because
generations of copies etc. and suddenly i'm not kicking a
WAV file out the door, it's like i'm literally bushwhacking
a direct trail to the recipient of the vinyl. this is on top
of the excitement of... will i feel it? and i'm genuinely
not sure there. perhaps i'll put it on and merely say "this
sounds wonderful and that was a journey but it merely sounds
wonderful and i was hoping for..." or maybe it'll be
wonderful and direct. i'm curious how it'd pan out

related -- kanye west is scary mental ill now, but that
little puck he put an album out on -- i love that because
it's a guaranteed experience. like, the sound system comes
with the album and no one [my personal most hated thing]
plays it on a terrible tinny phone with no bass right in
front of me. i think it'd be very hip-hop if you shipped
every album with a decent stereo to ensure it's heard
properly

i feel there really is something to a physical circuit; a
classic

[EpicMegaTangent ~ "i am certain the brain incorporates at
least some form of physical modelling" a plate reverb is an
example of which..]

then it's onto some stucco of magnetic substrate and [yes,
right, i'm ignorant of the physics of tape beyond this] and
the same value i feel those physical circuits bring could
absolutely be transferred to this. is it lame like picking a
different pixel blend algorithm? i'm ignorant of the physics
of tape really

that, however, yes, if we grant that tape captures
something, and you keep it tape, limit xeroxing, then to
physical record grooves, then you've kept when i appreciate
about physical circuits over laptops [they're wonderful too
tho] into a 3D physical object that can sit on someone's
shelf.

i suppose there would obviously have to be something of
enough detail to make the test worth it. then you'd also
ideally want to A/B, have a vinyl with all the normal
computer stuff on a slow boat so it's ready about the time
you finish the phil spector signal chain insanity and you
can listen to both

offline EpicMegatrax from Greatest Hits on 2023-07-06 04:15 [#02629047]
Points: 25264 Status: Regular

ahaha, yes, you could have the pure analog signal chain mix
on the A side and the FLACs sent around the world mix on the
B side. thus making my philosophically sound but impractical
idea even moreso

stern warnings to only listen to the analog side using the
included blaupunkt under threat of mice

the tape machine is a better idea

vinyl, right. i have questions there too

i know it is x/y, one channel wobbles, the other nods. do
people mix for this for any reason? i.e. "can we nod a
little wider than we can wobble without losing the needle?"
-> "we can one channel be cut a bit louder" because...
gravity, centrifugal force, i dunno? the boffins designing
the system would fight hard to make the answer "no" i am
sure, but things don't always go according to plan

why does thad ask me for vinyl?
i guess it does sound a bit more saturated no matter what
you put on it. but it's absurd. i haven't even learned my
tape machine yet

as you can hear: yes, actually, this works out great. but
then i've blown my whole melodic wad upfront and by the end

you out about when the wavestation is finally done singing

Cause I like physical format
Over digital
Anyday

i don't have the cash to get stuff pressed up. i don't have
the cash for anything now, really, and it's actually pretty
dicey. but theoretically it'll smooth out

and what are you asking me for, really, and why? is it about
looking at some physical thing as you listen? is it about
something you can have on the shelf like people who collect
sneakers?

on the other end, i am saying: ^^ financial situation, and:
a CD is the same as the FLAC files; a vinyl pressed from
FLAC would be industry standard, but then would you even
follow through and buy it yourself. and then international
shipping. do record labels still exist?

i grumblingly accept this thing business sorts call
"creating value." what value does my music create for
someone? not much, sadly. and it's not because it's not
good, it's because music isn't valued by society in a
financial sense. taylor swift gets everyone's spotify money;
why would i want to pad her bank account with my work?

so then i said: stuff it, i think i can pull through on my
own, i'm not expecting to sell a lot of records, but can
someone send me a 16 track? because that would just kill it
with what i do

what i really want is, i dunno, almost like a salary job
except just send us an album or two a month. but creating
value and where's the money come, to send me, for that? not
really sure. i could do nice ad jingles actually

but a tape machine would be nice

and, how much would it be worth to you if i did a one-off
thad edition physical copy? like, it would be a burned CD-R,
but i'd make the packaging and stuff myself. if someone else
wanted one too i'd do something slightly different from the
thad edition for them etc. is that worth $50? $100?

[...plus shipping, cash upfront or escrow]

i actually am not happy with the album cover of haptique,
actually. i wanted it to basically be like the joy division
album cover people have on black t-shirts, except the
waveform is a canoe

but AI spat that image out with sailboats and canoes and it
followed the overall form of the joy division album cover i
requested, and so, actually, that's quite good

and quite good is a dangerous thing. it's actually annoying
me a bunch because i can see it in my hed with crystal
clarity, but... i kick myself off when i'm looking for
equations to describe a canoe so i can feed them into a 3D
graphing calc

i'll do that later.

offline EpicMegatrax from Greatest Hits on 2023-07-11 01:18 [#02629181]

oh, hmm. interesting. when i said "i can see it clearly in
my head" it's not, like, ulillillia pixels, but it is... i'm
actually seeing the lines as . . . instead of solid lines.
that i'm seeing the canoe from an isometric perspective;
diagonal like in simcity 2k

and i looked up the joy division... it's called
WRONG NOT CANO^H^H temporary pleasures and now that i think
on it, i totally did remember it was all horizontal and not
diagonal isometric, and dots instead of lines

and when i say "i can see it clearly in my head" it's more
like "i was so certain of the exact image i wanted that i
just assumed the joy division album cover was like the image
i wanted because it was not relevant to the image i wanted
to give a shit about whether joy division went linear or
isometric"

isometric. and dots. that i tried getting an AI to do it
first, and, no, dammit, this needs to be deliberately made.

i don't have the skill to freehand it, not without driving
myself mental for a week and a half. so a 3D graphing
calculator, and dredging up math equations to model canoes.

unless anyone can suggest a shorter path? if you suggest
using some random mesh off the internet i will fucking stab
u

ok. i see. it works if you use linear lines [for the signal
bands?] like the joy division dying star pulsar, but you can
still make the resulting canoe appear isometric, with the
front of it pointing bottom left. flatline with the canoe
being the only signal. and then it's dots and...

shit, i want it to look like a vector field now. in 3D. i'm
so fucked

my idea of a perfect life, actually, would be to blindly
hurl myself into solving the shit out of this album cover
issue -- impulsively, with no thought of disappearing for ~1
week and only having "well that's how long it took to get
the canoe right" as my only excuse for myself afterwards.
collapse into a sobbing heap two or three times because my
eyes hurt and i don't understand this math and it's 3am and
what am i doing?

oh, right. these meltdowns happen but if i keep going i will
fucking get my album cover

instead, i have to pick my battles. i'm going to stick a pin
in this one, as they say on the work chat apps -- i think
it's a better use of my time to just record more music
instead. an album, or an album cover... obvious decision, i
guess. but dammit, we could have both
