first time sushi

I have never tried sushi. ever, in my life I know, toddler
status. It's embarrassing.

It's now the raw element. It's the *fishy* element that
seems gross.

I'm willing to try it now, I like fish more than I used to.
I told a friend I wouldn't try it from a grocery store etc.
Gotta be a nice restaurant (fuck me, I will NEVER be able to
spell this restaurant without google).

Now I'm going to a nice spot in San Francisco. I'll order
some tempura shrimp as a backup which I know I'll like.

Recommend me a tasy bit of sushi that's not too fishy?

I wanna try the "fatty tuna" cause I do like tuna.

for the record:

If I saw someone make a post about phonography statistics/
wife sex AND sushi on the same day

MY answer this this question would be:
"try your wife's pussy"

I already thought of it, bitch. Good try.

How can you be 40 and never ever try sushi once in your life
up to that point? It's like never eating pizza

In America don't they do odd things like put cream cheese in
there? I guess you can put anything...

My partner, an excellent cook, taught me how to make sushi.
Not Jap-Grade award-winning Sushi sure, but perfectly fine.
It's a bit fiddly but not that difficult, and
satisfying to do.

Go for anything roll without surimi or "hot" sake tuna
(which is minced mash and has no texture)

My top recommendation is a roll with crispy sake skin, sake
(salmon)
and unagi (eel)
Get some maki along:
Shitake (super intense flavor)
Avocado or sake/avocado mix
Most expensive fish in maki is usually not
a great value for your taste buds as the rice often
is more premanent.
So get one or two fish or anything nigiri you are curious
about tasting it raw.
My personal fave is unagi (great sauce and usually smoked)
Or sake.

Fave drink along is a ginger tea
Obviously

Oh and take it easy with the wasabi
Personally i only see it enhancing sake nigiri or similar
raw fish
And ruining pretty much everthing else

sushi is suited to jap-style DNA patterns, what u need is
pie and mash

I think I missed it because my mom doesn't like it so I
wasn't exposed to it. And I didn't really like fish as a
kid.

I have a date with my buddy to go to a nice sushi restaurant
in SF. He's ok with it if I gag and eat something else, but
I will give it a real try and post back.

Roger: we probably Americanize the crap out of sushi, tho I
think this restaurant will be more authentic. I'll make sure
to be dubious if I see cream cheese anywhere on the menu.

thanks ijon! that's actually helpful. I'm most scared of the
eel, that sounds really gross but I will still try it.

I love wasabi/horseradish and expect that to carry the day
in general.

any opinion on fake fish?

i'm vegan, so would eat it. but i kind of hate fish, so fake
fish as well. so i guess a better question is: is sushi
without fish still interesting enough?

i've had fake squid, came with a thin, vinegary dip. was ok,
a bit slimy. no real wish to indulge again

ew

i guess something like tuna or some white fish will be
easier to fake. i've seen the fish advertised at some sushi
place and will try it (next month, i'm organizing a movie
night with ghost in the shell and sushi)

you can have great vegan sushi plates even.
especially avocado, shiitake make great maki or nigiri,
algae can be tasty Gunkan-Maki,
have an algae salad too, yum!
temaki handrolls are basically vegan
if you leave the surimi out,
Inari-Sushi are sweet pockets made out of fried tofu skin
and absolutley delicious, we never leave them out.

there is "no-fish" sauce that resembles fish sauce pretty
well and sushi rice generally lives or dies with the basic
sauces, most of which are vegan as is wasabi.
possibilities with vegan ingredients to make rolls
are huge.

now, that being said...
i find it hard to pass on sake (salmon) or unagi (eel).
so, where it is served, i order them, with delight.
however it is only going to be a matter of time until the
subs will be just as great and i will order them if the
manufactoring is better for the environment by a large
amount.

was originally gonna be a nicer one in SF (a short ferry
ride from my buddy's house) but I opted for this closer one
in the east bay that he vouches for. It's probably better
for a beginner and less $$$ for something I might end up
hating. We'll see how it goes.

Since xlt was down I wrote my review on discord (w a couple
of pics),

But yeah it good! Not fishy like I was expecting.. just very
slightly oceany (fresh tasting) with the consistency of rare
beef. Tried salmon, tuna and eel (eel was the best of the
three).

It needed a bit more fat for my American tastes, next time
will try it with a little Wasabi mayo or something, I think
that would add enough.

dad and sister used to make sushi once a week. bad enough
they'd leave a chunk of salmon under a dripping sink for two
hours, but, man. i cannot stand the smell of rice vinegar
for whatever reason

i'd tried sushi and didn't care for it, but thought nothing
of them going to sushi classes, buying equipment, etc. but
something something "oh it'd be cool to have a hardcore
asian roommate, a change of pace" and then you actually get
a hardcore asian roommate and change your mind.

i wonder if my well-received watmm posts about tony
motherfuckin' wu are still on watmm somewhere.

probably not. joyrex would insist on cleaning stuff up
"because it's old and clutters things up" but both joyrex
and i know the real reason was "because it's not free"

while a layer above the core answer of "because i'm a cheap
bastard," the real reason of "because it's not free" is
still not great PR and we'd best dress it up further.

hence a picture is painted of joyrex savagely
deleting Truly Classic Shit
being a diligent and
dedicated admin. cleaning up after us all -- shouldn't we be
so super grateful?

joyrex wishes to add the following ~

° "keeping old posts actually far worse than 'not free' --
it impacts profit margins"

° "why the [hank hill expletive] should i pay to keep
content my community has generated when i've already banned
anyone vocal about keeping content the community has
generated?"

° "why i am i being simulated in an EpicMegatrax post? this
is worse than a root canal. his simulation of me is
literally over a decade out of date since i don't answer
emails from The Banned"

sorry joyrex. it's over now [throws him back into the lake]

...anyways, I was fishing around for some context for my
comments about hardcore asian roommates, and I literally did
my thing and liveblogged the whole arc on watmm. And if
those are still there, they will be a supremely entertaining
read. I was 21, drinking heavily, and the only reason I
didn't come out looking like a complete douche myself was
that Tony Motherfucking Wu was infinitely worse.

my point is that sushi is a bad roommate.

I would advise against having

i was in Sainsburys the other day and couldn't help smiling
when there was a Jewish mother and her very dippy/liberal
teenager daughter wandering around, and i heard the mother
going "do you want any stuff for your sushi", pointing at
the shelf.
What you want is some proper Japanese ideals, not a very
shit impression of the food.

to be fair I DID try it all without any accoutrements. Mb a
little soy sauce and some of that wasabi paste on some of
the bites.

It was good and clean.
https://imgur.com/a/fonmOgy
I got the tempura vegetables and chicken katsu as a safety
net. They were still both better than the sushi, but the
sushi was good too.

I will try it again, but next time put some mayo on the
shit, it can only make it better.

I posted about it b4 (couple of times), but I grew up around
a lot of persians. Close friends of the family and tenants
at our house.

All these cats could cook and their food was awesome. I
loved those guys. Saffronny yellow basmati rice that was
crisp at the bottom, lavash bread and bbq with interesting
flavors.

I hope you enjoy your meal and forget about work for a bit
and whatever else ails you!

I'm going out with my wife, mom, and grandma (shes 97!)--
all my special ladies, for my 40th birthday next week.

sundance steak house in Palo Alto for some prime rib. Might be my
favorite meal. Little man in the picture you referenced
wants to take me out later in the week too but not sure
where tho!
