L . A . Style James Brown Is Dead ( Original Mix )

the sample, for the stab, now curious to know what the
other samples are, because I'm guessing it's all samples
(except for the kick and the bass)

here's the 90s rap version. there's many
versions, though

(i was reminded of this track, by this interview
with 2 Unlimited's Ray Sleingaard. which i watched because
this interview with Felix was pretty boring,
unlike his track Don't You want me. and here's a how
that's made.

/youtube watch history)

really wish that Felix video was the 3 minute single
version, though. it has such a weird, bad cut off

this track is, like... it blows my mind how many times it's
randomly come up. i actually feel like there's some reason
for it that i don't fully understand -- something like, the
right thing at the right time, but what that thing was and
what time or why... i remember first girlfriend i ever had
going on about the song out of nowhere. more recently, a
sales guy at the office in his 40s went on a tear about it.
it just kind of pops up like a gopher to an extent where it
feels like there's something going on here that i don't
quite understand

i first heard it when i was 9, and, after seeing "Hackers"
in the theatre and hearing, like, underworld and prodigy for
the first time, it was kind of like "alright, i've been
eying this 'techno' for a bit now, and that's it, i'm going
out to the store" and of course this track was in the
absolute first round of stuff i bought (1/2 of which wasn't
even really techno and i mis-bought because i hadn't a clue)

i should dig up the other topic where we did some of this
before

but associated with those youtube vids are like... interview
with teh abbeloos, how to make the stab from anesthasia. i
haven't watched these yet

and oh my gosh, yes. just very randomly, someone put me onto
"guardiac" and dfgjhkdfg this is like, hell, prodigy^2,
gremlins creeping out of the corners and eating the beats.
and apparently there was some re-release in 2019 and i've
missed it?

we're on a bit of a dutch tip here on xlt as of late, aren't
we? and T99. a proper fucking dutch dynamo

the whole album, really. it's impressive, like... how
clearly it comes through? like, the skydreamer. it reminds
me of RPG music in the 00's, and there's some native
chattering, and... this is just me stretching my own
references across, but between the title, the composition,
the sampling... yeah. same as the parkers. etc

honestly the result of this thred is youtube reminded me of
T99 and i've been listening to that all day. guardiac about
to start on my cans right now. end of skydreamer

and if you step outside yourself for a moment and just
analyze the frequencies, like... it's not just a bassline in
these tracks, there's a very physical sense of dynamics
where the amplitude of the bassline... surges, moves, and
it's hnnnNNNuunnNNugh and i've thot about this in my own
music for quite a while. but then i'm listening to this
again, and, dammit, you have such a clearer idea don't you?
just listening to the EQ cutoffs on that bass

LAZY_TITLE ~ actually like a bassist in a rock band

but then anesthesia? anastasia + anesthesia? i figure

then, oh, youtube is dying, i can't find a non-shit copy of
this so please don't sue me oliver LAZY_TITLE

duurBrpBrpptDUuuuuu and there's a synergy of the bassline
pattern and amplitude, and wonderful EQ i don't understand,
etc. and what i do understand is it stops being "oh the song
has a bassline" and instead "the bassline has a physical
shape" and being able to manage it at times doesn't mean i
understand it.

i think the T99 stuff, just also so... like, this is not
just composition, this is choreography. that there are some
quite obvious motions to some of these songs, and that's
something i'm also very much interested in

that PHAT_PLNIT -- sorry, not dutch -- is wonderful, in
that... to any living person, with perhaps a bit of pot and
scotch... put this song on in an open space, speakers, good
bass, reasonably loud and... pretend you have an air sword.
swish it around. shuffle your feet forward and strike, you
know, like the ninjas do. because, really, this song is just
so... HOW DO YOU NINJA SWORD SO CEARLY WITH A TRACK? augh.
then if you get into it, really focused -- that i recommend
doing this with music every day, really? -- you realize
that, deep into the song, there are just things like, eight
ghostly sword arms coming out of your back. same as running
drum machines really

HOW DO YOU NINJA SWORD SO CEARLY WITH A TRACK?

i had this visualization in my head of a point going around
a circle in a cartesian plane, and then i pull down from
viewing it atop and rotate back downwards until i see it as
a line, and, yeah, that tracks with the motion. something
something sine cosine...

rave, though. i was actually thinking about the functional
aspects here -- part of the reason -LAS-JBID has the just
dieux, dieu, dudu by itself is to give people a moment to
catch their breath before it really runs them. and everyone
knows it and everything is organized here, thanks

that one of the cleverest things i think, in anasthasia,
there's this extended chill section they drop here and
there, where it's almost just a sort of lazy stoner nod.
it's about even enough time to go take a shot at the bar,
perhaps. then, alright, break's over everyone -- and it
explodes again

are the star blasts on the album cover nitrous? i've never
actually tried whippits, nitrous, whatev. but i have heard
descriptions of such visuals

but then the way the lightning bolt noises snap to the beat,
maximizor, if it's not too scandalous i think this album was
co-authored by ketamine

but there are so many little... guardiac, 2:52, very natural
to make hand signs, perhaps ~ visualizing from self
perspective with right hand: one, two (hold up fingers) get
down (pull finger #2 down, leaving a pointing up finger,
which you then rotate to point... get down). backspin,
fvhrt, fvhrt (rotating finger) yay! (throw your hands up in
the air in a silly manner) and maybe this is how they wrote
it even.

so the shape of the ear -- the pinna -- acts as a comb
filter and this is crucial for how we tell whether or not a
sound is coming from in front or behind. i think this is
solid. but left and right... last i checked, it was like:
"yes, obviously, the brain uses the relative amplitude
between left and right, but if you're talking about the
relative timing of the signals, we're not sure neurons can
be that fast" and alright, let's see where they're at now.
and wikipedia is like "....in 1948" and then "in 2015, we're
still not really sure"

i'd figure you could do alright if you have a sort of BBD
mechanism that repeatedly copies the sound down the line
into a fuzz, but also allowing you to slow it down, allowing
a lower-resolution version of... where most of the sounds
are coming from? then you glue it into everything else and
perceive it as direction?

but i'm thinking "sinusoidal fades and motions" is more key
for sword

i'm trying to figure out what you mean. are you speaking,
like, synaesthesia, mind's eye, etc? or do you mean there's
literally a version of the track named "white version" or
something?

on i think the purple-ish color is accurate. and some blues,
on black. but that could just be me. the official "nevenen"
color is #666699 like an old mimeograph.

...and there are all these videos, some of which actually
look pretty good, about how the sounds were made. it's an
embarrassment of riches. i actually haven't watched any of
them yet, though, because i actually spent most of yesterday
simply listening to the album. i bookmarked a whole bunch
because they look fantastic... and then just kept listening
to the album

it's a freaking icon. and it surprised me too, really --
that, like, i find it when i'm 9 and i've gone to the store
to buy "techno" for the first time, and now it's almost 30
years later and it keeps coming up. unlike a lot else i got
that day

so believe it or not, yes. people about my age, in the US...
you'll actually get quite a huge amount of "OHHH YEAH I
REMEMBER THAT"

and again, i was surprised too. i'm actually curious
about... the path that took. around the world etc

it's getting close. friends' kids are starting to get old
enough. that soon enough i'm going to get a why the hell
did you tell them about that song now we hear it all day
long with absolutely no rest
and/or every time we put
the song on she breaks something, and she keeps demanding to
hear it again

ohh, you mean you perceived it as white. JBID actually seems
more towards that to me... it's... because it's strobe-y.
strobe light etc.

some study was done, they had synaesthetes pick color
schemes for a piece of music or something, and none of them
matched. then they had some normal people show up and pick
color schemes, and none of them matched. then they did
another round where everyone reviewed everyones' color
choices and arranged them best to worst and the synaesthetes
cleaned everyones' clocks even though their picks seemed
vastly different

and i come back to the classic phrase, "the map is not the
territory"

so there is no right answer to how a track "looks" but
discussing it is still valuable

Sensation White. boring answer, sorry. (also no live
video for this song, even though it was the main theme for
one edition, i'm pretty sure)

sorry i've jumbled things! continuing on because here we
are

i was, "oh, i'll put this on and go for a walk" -- first
track. and what colors do i think...

the first synth sound, pine tree green. almost like a
screensaver drawing a pine branch across the screen. that it
makes me feel a little cold. edges of driving through snow
and pine trees on a crisply black road. but then i'm arguing
with myself about the arp. and suddenly i find myself going
yellow with it, and i think: you know, i don't usually use
yellow... and it's increasingly abstract from there but it
goes down to the tones of an oil painting in the TV room
when i was growing up

but then other people have, like an oscilloscope in their
head, and it's almost like a piece of hardware they've had
installed in there. i've more just spent so much time
picturing it all, that... it's all made up of me picturing
it, but it's developed its own opinions and will regularly
surprise me by... yellow, hmm, that's unusual

offline EpicMegatrax from Greatest Hits on 2023-05-09 02:00 [#02627351]
Points: 25264 Status: Regular

a dirty yellow, i'll clarify. like, painting, i'd mix in a
little blue and black. and the painting was... some painter
reasonably well known; can't recall. but it's a lake in
foliage season. there's not much pine in there; that's from
elsewhere. but you need that dirty yellow to get the tones
in that painting. and i suppose this means the sound evokes
some rather specific flavor of nostalgia etc etc and you can
begin to see how everyone can have entirely different color
maps, and, so long as they have a thoughtful one, just chart
through music and use it as a way to reach through the noise
and pull out someone else's personal equivalent of that
painting.

but then, that vid, ketamine strut -- some of this can be
unarguably universal, when drugs are involved

so, dutch stuff, right. tell me about this DDR track
"butterfly" by, apparently, "Smile.dk" ?

the domain name has obviously been ganked by something
unrelated. but, to my ear (actually, my eye fed into the
physical modeling of subvocalization) this sounds like a
demoscene name, that someone did tracker music and they made
the name up before it was even possible for them to register
smile.dk -- a strong hunch

curious about the story behind this, though -- some dutch
guy sat down and tried to make a track that would fly off
the shelves in japan? or maybe it all came from some drug
hallucination?

but "butterfly" is the one DDR track everyone knows
