i'm talking full body goosebumps from a piece of art

this ever happen to you?

sadly my wife and a few of my friends have NEVER experienced
this

but it's my favorite feeling.

Aphex Twin- 4, when the beat drops out and we're left with
that clipping melody with pings. that's definitely one of
those moments for me.

there was some guy -- seems a proper self-promotional
charlatan, and i think he was local too... doing a study on
being able to voluntarily trigger goosebumps. that
apparently this goes quite far; people doing this to
heighten the experience during sex etc. as some reports go

that i remember this was 2018, specifically, it popped up on
ars technica, he's doing a study. and i wrote in: yes. how
do you define voluntary? because if i very strongly begin
meditating on tasty food, i can make myself salivate, even
though i have no direct control over my salivary glands...
or do i, since i can trigger that? and then i can play music
back in my head and give myself goosebumps, would you like
me to be part of your study?

and i'd said more about mindfulness and my history with
music and he wrote back "yeah a lot of people have basically
said that, mindfulness" and he didn't say further but he
meant the thing like the salivary glands and that's how most
people do it, deliberate goosebumps.

i half figure if i really studied it i could learn to switch
it on more directly.

i actually think i have just cracked how to cry
deliberately, a couple days ago. it's still hard though.
takes concencrate

mm, but 2:20, that's the moment i'd pull out for that guy's
study
he didn't write back after that

or noooo 1:38

where the synopating is just like visuals crossfading, light
shifting

i could go on. but perhaps i experience these things in a
bit more detail than most and that's why it works when i
want goosebumps on demand.

the moment you linked in 4, in any case

the melody is saying something like, "i just wanted your
attention, i'm an innocent child" ending with i-Was-ON-ly
THIRSTY

then dfhjgdfhg snare rush where you've dropped and pushing
the air out of you, breathe back in and reflect

that's my read, anyways

ventolin? trying to recreate an asthma attack? would it make
sense that i decided i'd rather not?

as a curiosity -- that i've done tracks with far more feels,
and even those don't compare to... you know, all this other
shit -- here is a track when i was first off on my own with
a driver's license and just putting the anxiety of what i
felt into a track

LAZY_TITLE

these tense orderly things and then you fall inside this
swelling bellows of deep anxiety i dunno

it's not a candle to afx or tipper but it was a very honest
track from a young lad

4, though. right, that one, you want that one. when you ask
how many times have you tripped that is a long
conversation. but when you ask, "what is the most" and,
actually, i forgot -- that the most acid i ever took at once
was 4 hits, and then i put on 4. on my 20GB ipod click wheel
3G whatever using the sony MDR-V6 cans that i still have [if
you care]. that everything was looking like i was in a van
gogh painting. i always have kind of wanted to try that much
again, really, because it was gorgeous. and then i put on 4.
on 4. and went out onto the 3rd floor balcony where there
was a snowstorm going on at proper levels for upstate new
york and all the swirls of snow were like starry night as i
listened. absolute top experience.

but, more recently

photodementia

the pitched cowbells trailing color... that, this gives me
the same feels as van gogh's starry night. without 4. if i
could ever argue that a track was an impressionist work of
genius

could not agree more with the fav feeling bit. never pinned
down exactly what it is about some tracks that do it, but
some do it pretty reliably for me, this being one
of em

belb: yeah those drums are deep, sounds rad. havent listened
to cannibal ox in like 15 years, mb longer. gonna hit up
some more now

epic: nice choice on tipper. I like this kind of stuff he
does more than his more "wub wubby" shit, but he's on it
here

I also like the track you made, and picture you, or a satyr
version of you, playing a renaissance flute starting at
1:01. No nerd chills, but fun stuff.

4 is RDJ's best track.

If it's not 4, it's the last 2 min of 54 Cymru Beats

i mean, this is very appropriate, but awkward, which is
makes it more appropriate. the aaron funk is pretty much,
like, if ulillillia smoked crack -- but being ulillillia,
smoking crack is FINE, so long as you don't go out and buy
more crack afterwards, because that's like blue water.

that i have something even more charmingly serious to
recount

my father was a brilliant and special man and it took him
talking about my CDs to realize he'd been sneaking in and
ripping every CD i had just because, like, this is my son,
and he's probably at least kind of good, and what's he
listening to?

and the one thing, like... we're right past the RDJ album,
Squarepusher's Hard Normal Daddy -- but the one thing where
he finally shows his cards, that i realize he's been
stealing all my CDs -- he was just beyond thrilled with
winnipeg is a frozen shithole. particularly the ~winnipeg~
every tyime. one

Let’s not
Smoke
crack

"Smoking crack is totally fine, so long as you don't go out
and buy more crack afterwards." --Venetian Snares

as part of this interview, he explained that 7sevens.med was
part of an experiment where he "literally smoked crack" --
he literally used the word literally -- smoked crack. then
got up the next day and tried to recreate the feeling of a
crack rush with music.

i read this and i got all stoked and got ahold of
777777g7df.med and, ppf, what? this sounds like if you ran
venetian snares through a bitcrusher

then the penny dropped: it's the same music and he's spent
the last decade or two increasing the resolution. that i'm
comparing where it went with where it started. a far
lower-resolution rendition of a crack rush

i have to say, crack is one of those things i'd never touch,
simply because it seems so "more-ish" i worry i'd... as he
put it, go buy more crack. i don't think he's a crackhead.
that maybe he even kept it up a bit, but i dunno, he's not
as sturdy as george clinton and i figure he's knocked it off
by now...

in any case, if we can roughly posit that the only reason
aaron funk bought more crack was because he needed to study
the sensation more in order to get his track right, i think
we can allow a little crack smoking. but i'll pass

clark. chris clark

can has ndl_drop and yes, yes, this video is
stunningly good, this is exactly how this sound pets me

that i remember going after trying to explain this as far
back as, like, 2009. i think the key leap is to not explain:
if you listen to herr barr, the nerd chills, maybe quantify
this a little? the back of your neck? running gently down
your back like a feather bird... hand... thing?

so, to not explain: this is the sound of a gentle pet down
the back of your neck, your side, translated into audio.
that perhaps clark has no idea either. he just sat there
until it sounded like it felt

he's so heavy on the compressor because it buys him a bubble
in which he can convey the sense of touch in his sounds with
more nuance
