AMBIENT MODE

i go to play some youtube vid and i see i have been
switched into "ambient mode" by default. meaning, it's
summing up the colors of the video and doing crappy, ugly
gradients in the web page background in a haze of marketing
around the video window. it is not a lightweight effect; it
hammers the CPU. this will drain your fone battery. that,
like, i use a pi 4 in my bedroom for surfing the web, and
this would nuke it.

unless you log in. log in to google, to youtube, forever.
and you won't have to rush to shut off ambient mode. every.
time

and that's why ambient mode exists, i theorize. the name is
ironic sarcasm. it's meant to irritate you into logging in
permanently so you don't have to keep switching it off.

either that, or it's one of those things where they use web
viewers like you and i to beta test something, and no one
else is seeing it except me and a few other tens of
thousands of plebs

i did some further testing.

i got this fucking "ambient mode" in firefox on linux,
locked down. adblock, noscript, etc. and as soon as i
switched it off other videos followed suit and left it off.
i closed firefox (set to clear all cookies) and then i view
the same vid and i'm in ambient mode again

try it on a mac, vivaldi: no ambient mode
mac, firefox: no ambient mode
back to linux pc, vivaldi: no ambient mode
linux pc, chrome incognito: no ambient mode

so maybe i'm a guinea pig. or maybe they're just offering a
huge middle finger to my default youtube configuration

i have one defense of youtube: us all being able to say,
"shit, m8, just listen to this, you'll see" and without
youtube we've resorted to posting mp3s ourselves somewhere
in a fragile manner.

then i'm thinking: there's something to actually having to,
like, browse through someone's shit on soulseek and think,
"yes, that might be good" and then commit to actually
download it; it's a thin barrier but youtube doesn't have it
and that gives the universe a very different feel if you
give youtube up and go back to that. a thot

i guess, whatever, just let me know if anyone else sees this
nonsense. if it's switched on everywhere, though, i'll
obviously find out without everyone replying. thanks for
reading my thred

yes it still happens on my firefux loonix

happening right here, right now ~ LAZY_TITLE

you can see the basic concept is to fart "ambience" like
that fucking TV gimmick where it has a bunch of LEDs on back
to ape whatever it's playing onscreen and make it more
"immersive"

i promptly shut such crap off.

it seems to have been steamrolled out more now

mark my words. 2024 will be the year youtube dies, at least
in the sense of "i want to link that random track for the
sake of discussion." youtube has been increasingly shit but
at least it did that... now, however, i feel it coming. the
reddit/api drama is just the start. that i even pick 2024
for a raisin or five; certain laws will kick into effect
upon the new year and from there it's tldr

i want to beat ambient mode with a fucking brick. this is
very rapidly training me to impulsively use command-line
software to rip any youtube video i am interested in rather
than actually watch it on their site. which is less hassle
than opening up a terminal and downloading it, right? until
ambient mode keeps turning back on because one has cookies
cleared every session and then ambient mode overheads your
old six-core AMD linux box and it freezes and NOW it is more
hassle to watch a vid on the youtube site than it is to
download it

i'm watching videos on signal processing because i still
want my dub plates

maybe

how about where the melody is made entirely from drum
feedback

I will listen but the stipulation was lush, so it had BETTER
be lush.

it's like how you're outside a club and you hear dum dum dum
and then you're in the lobby and it's DUM DUM DUM and it was
about trying to build that up into a whole track. so yeah
it's really focused on.... just texture, feel

bottle service also promises as delivered, the only other
one following that scheme rigidly on the album

...then asses and frequent c are two of my top faves within
last few years, others aren't bad either

there are actually more feedback tracks i cut from the album

epic i could have sworn i commented on this b4!

mainly because I remember the cover art (its your best cover
art)

and the track, maybe genuinely your best track (subjective)
I'll prolly buy it in the next couple days (not @ pc)

But for this to be ambient 2 things have to happen:

1. have to be diagnosed as deaf (so i cant hear 99% of your
sounds)
2. have to be diagnosed with down syndrome (so i mistake
honestly decent club techno for beatless ambient)

still tho, good stuff.

it was like "well this is closest i can think of that's
already organized online" and bottle service, yes there is a
beat, but i argue that qualifies, more or less

but i'm aware that's stretching it

i mean. i have a tub full of minidisc with things like,
dedicated record setup by piano for a year and a half like
2011ish, just me playing piano and occasionally making
augmenting noises. sometimes at +++ and i don't even
remember that shit. i remember my pendulum riff though and i
do want that one someday. but most of it's probably crap and
i can't link you a minidisc in a plastic bin from The
Container Store

...and that is an interesting thot. how long do
these things keep on the shelf? because i do have a setup
tuned for ripping tapes 96k now that could easily go to MD

but witness the horror of my MD labeling scheme, which
breaks down into a gradient of [actual helpful names,
names that meant something at the time but now mean nothing
to me but maybe i'll remember if i listen, illegible
scrawls, integers going into the 40s]

the piano ones were later in the MD days and thankfully i've
done myself a favor with the label

also not ambient but

steve in the blackbox thred, sed: "its got that
anaesthetic thing that i get from some tunes"
and i'm
not sure what that means, exactly, but i'm pretty sure mine
does it better

oh, boo. i don't get credit for not posting, do i? only
demerits for shitting post too much.

crap not posted includes:

â‹„ the minidisc player had an exploded battery too. long
post about cleaning that up, sony's design aesthetic

â‹„ i've ripped the piano discs but i still need to listen
through it all. i actually think this might be better to
chop up in renoise than to release. i could make a house
track out of chopping bits up

â‹„ "AMBIENT" well i also have the 2014 modular jams, those
are... pretty... ambient? those i will probably post soon

â‹„ "AMBIENT" the fuck is ambient, anyways? wallpaper music,
eno's definition. my previous post, i made SPACEPORT EP
after hearing that "music for airpots" gag. but, really,
what _IS_ ambient, anyways? plenty of SAW II tracks have a
beat. i've danced around to "shiny metal rods" multiple
times before

â‹„ so maybe, like, AMBIENT as in, "that made me feel
like someone dosed me for a moment" or AMBIENT as in the
plastikman album that got my breathing to sync up with the
air conditioner?

â‹„ i'll add some other "AMBIENT" rejects to Da Club as
bonus trax so you'll buy it?

â‹„ etc

* DA CLUB now has bonsnuz trax ~ TRUKQS, Tinky, Tre, fu

* acid repo also like a second album in bonus. who was
it that wanted the roger/AE one? big?

stay tuned for more nonsense later, probably, because i know
this matters very much to you

nevermind. some or all of that will show up eventually.
wolfslice hasn't bought anything. back on
topic!!!

i am looking for a good youtube video on "CDMA Signal
Spreading" -- and nevermind what that is, except that it's
an engineering lecture sort of thing.

the fact that it decides to switch on "ambient mode" for
this vid is crystal-clear example of how this is intentional
useless poop and they know it; they've put it in here to
fucking punish people like me for not signing in.

i've started ripping them all and carefully filing them, but
that's getting tedious. i've never written a firefox/chrome
extension before but i'm feeling curious how to do that
right about now
