How Dubstep was Discovered

it's a good thing he specified lowe's, or i might have gone
to the home despot instead.

as soon as he made the mouthpiece noise, like... OHHH i know
what this will sound like

let's talk patches, though, this immediately makes me want
to go replicate this. i know exactly what delay to use. but
the mouthpiece

then, wait. wind instruments work by air vibrating back and
forth in the chamber. the ideal chamber would be completely
sealed, but then no sound could escape, nor no air be tooted
in. so it's mostly sealed instead, and something
something the reed creates oscillations that form standing
waves... i think?

connecting the toot interface to the tube.. it's like
switching to a lower register, a much larger pipe on your
pipe organ. and it is about the air physically vibrating
back and forth in the tube. so no, that's not quite just a
delay at all

he specified numbers for... tube volume... hmm

do u have a license for that drone sir?
but i was just playing an autechre record
well, stop it.

...and no throwing the record, either. that's still an
unlicensed drone flying through the airspace

[good idea; sounds like it'd work. speed the footage up tho]

i think i know how to do something like the didgeridoo
sound. i've certainly done it by accident before, and...
it's probably the boss delay pedal with the tempo input
again. with some careful mixing

hah i just realised it is literally a drone thru a
triggered wah pedal

oh that makes ear sense. perhaps something like

that you're not wrong to want the original vid, i suspect
the guy goes into physics a bit more. what i described
above, a sealed-ish tube, standing waves, that is how an
~actual~ didgeridoo works. it's _freaking hard_ esp. if you
don't know circular breathing

but the _track_, didgeridoo, yeah, it's the dynamics of this
or that driving the wah curve. which does not have to be wah
actually, it could be an envelope follower driving the
filter. which is how i got something similar

i love this stuff. i would also recommend, as a way to
design sounds... like, i clearly care about the physics, but
the basic approach of "alright, i need something that
replicates the mouthpiece" and then "alright now i need
something to do the plastic tube" and i'm sure, with all
these machines, i can find those somewhere. and you would be
surprised how often that this is as far as you need to think
things through to get what you want

like when richard feynment went into the library and asked
for a map of a cat.

but i wasn't trying to be... i'd never even made that
connection, until just now. and no, not as clever as him,
sorry. it's just nice that... he'd have done it this way
too, i half suspect. care about the physics. but also....

i suppose it's almost more like i was building with legos
when i was six. if i'm building a spaceship, i am of the
adamant belief that a spaceship has to have this, that, and
whatever... and i can find the solution in this bin of
parts

music is just kind of... my favorite "why does 303 sound
good" answer was "because it sounds like a rodent in
distress." and not only is that 112% lol for
phrasing, but... yeah. the sound of... more a mammal,
really... screaming, squealing. and that's why it gets
people so excited

any opinions on why it's harder to make it feel like music
is moving sideways, as opposed to up or down? i suspect
gravity

that i really cannot think of any other things where i
can... "ok, i need a mouthpiece, and some tubes, let's go"
and sometimes it's going in as little as fifteen minutes.
that i would trace this back to... i might have been
tripping; or just stoned. but, early on, i was like "i'm
going to build it like legos" and it worked. then i tried it
again and it worked

and music is just kind of... tickling shared hardware,
shared cultural libraries. that you are building
representations of things using fragments of stimuli
intended to evoke a desired whatever.

to write a track called "flugelhorn on mars" and have
someone sit bolt upright and say "by gosh, this song has to
be called 'flugelhorn on mars,' because that's ~exactly~
what it'd sound like." -- that's pretty fucking hard. but i
don't think it's impossible; is my point.

but if you're in a mood one day and you say i want to
make a song called cybernetic bees
then that
one's quite doable. like legos

in any case, dubstep was discovered when some producer
watched a bunch of k-heads body checking cars and raving to
the collective cacophony. that the rave had gotten going, a
bit, then it was shut down, and this is part protest and
being cut off, sure, but it's really more the momentum has
to go somewhere

or this is what i imagine. no one told me that; completely
made it up.

a bunch of k-heads body checking cars

...to set off the alarms, to be clear. and lots of cars,
just setting them off one by one, you can hear them moving
down the street like... this genre of music i'm about to go
home and invent; shit

that must have been a damn fine moment, whoever had it. i'm
jelly

this is my third favorite, of the three

i love the first thing, it's so funny and it sounds cool.
but the original is really cool, too. trumpets are just very
cool
