upscaling is the new auto tune
(surface blur and ai can do horrible things to you,
especially faces, lips)
sometimes it works pretty great though.

not as ghastly as a face culler

that is pretty uncanny valley, however.

that, loool, feeling better about this AI wave now,
because...

AI is trained on web data, and images from the web of faces
contain lots of selfies. so not only does it wind up turning
peoples' faces into selfies, but you'll see it rather
disconcertingly "pop in" as someone gets close enough to the
camera to have a discernible face.

i was arguing with myself earlier: "can this shit really
make up anything proper new? ...given that it's made up of
things we've already created? then, oh, i guess we get some
decent new with the image generators, but..."

yeah. these people thinking AI is going to do things like
book them hotel tickets are in for a rude awakening when
they find their new virtual assistant is a cross between a
14yo male troll and a 14yo female selfie narcissist

elon musk all: "oh, they're going too fast"

...and, if we're lucky, he's right, but for the wrong
reasons -- it's due to embarrass itself repeatedly as
microsoft is on a coke binge shoving ChatJeep't into every
little thing. it's utterly predictable; but they cannot be
stopped. because it hasn't blown up yet, right?

but then, AI will respond to someone's cousin with a sexual
proposition. then AI will make some bad stock trades. then
someone will throw themselves off a bridge because they've
decided to try using it to replace therapists. and they'll
already have been fending off lawsuits, saying "we'll fix
it, we'll fix it" but it'll take something like that last
part to finally kill it

so, don't worry: microsoft's on it. they'll kill this AI
stuff right good

in the 1950s a bunch of MIT professors, including Marvin
Minsky, got up in front of the press and the world and
announced they'd have this AI thing cracked in ten years.

they got quite a bit of egg over that one. like, oh. shit.
this is a lot harder than we thought

the gist of it is that they made some rapid progress in
multiple areas for a while, and simply assumed it'd keep
going that way. then they hit a wall. and another wall. by
the 80s AI was just a sci-fi trope

...and i wonder if they're about to do it again.

ChatGPT is just a giant autocomplete that takes countless
$bil to build/run. it cannot learn on the fly. that,
effectively, it is incapable of remembering. to do this,
it'd have to update this giant model every "turn"

and fjording that river... my hunch is -- good luck buddy

very strange riff on plato's allegory of the cave: what if a
person never saw the side of peoples' heads growing up?
...and they just see peoples' selfies instead? what would
their perception of reality be like?

(don't think too hard about it)

just had a very elegant idea. but the margins are too small

watch the part just after amsterdam, and... woman red
hat, dead center of the image, watch as she turns away, then
back. away, then back. no one takes selfies of the back left
of their head, so there's some oddity

tools except whoever made it thinks it's normal and cool and
not creepy

personally i think the sound is the most offensive part

yeah the guy made it manually with stock sound FX. it's
crap, i agree. but i didn't really... focus on it enough for
it to bother me. i was too busy judging the AI stuff, which
was the ostensible point. so if it makes any sense, i vote
the sound is irrelevant because this is an AI demo and the
sound AIn't

(...has anyone thought of that one, yet? AIn't?)

my dad was actually tasked with trying to auto-colorize film
back in the 70s or 80s and told them it couldn't be done. it
makes me kind of sad he's not around to see all this

he was telling me this in the 90s. then i asked him, "so how
do they colorize films, then?"

"oh, it's a bunch of hippies in a room"

it's funny you mention mushrooms (nice)

cause I was watching another one of these

california 1940s colorized

and was getting heavy mushroom vibes. just slightly off,
slightly alien. a feeling I've been to these places b4 (I
havent).
