that i'm on the fence with the "big, ur discord got pwnd"
thred. because big is nice and i don't want to use that
thread to make my point because of that. however, here's one
that works well enough, and all i have to say is this: you
see?

it was an organic process, what zilty is. no one planned it;
no one thought of it. i certainly didn't. afterwards,
however, it was obvious: this is a beautiful accident

that phobs, the fruit, tunemx, etc. went on and have a
career and want to be CTO or some shit, the fire that drove
them to build the place is there but otherwise occupied.

most people would have just pulled the plug, esp. with the
nightmare zilty can be, but... what's my metaphor here?
shooting old yeller is not quite right, though there is
probably some of that

instead, i dunno, i think it's more like it simply feels
like bad karma to knock down a tree that's been there for
over a hundred years simply because it's in your way

then the compromises required -- career, AND not pulling the
plug on zilty -- result in executive decisions that, at the
time, felt equal parts brilliant, fair, and brutal. like:
sign-ups are shut-off because people were making dozens of
dupe accounts, it was a disaster, and, again, instead of
pulling the plug... "oh, fuck it, let's just disable
sign-ups, maybe it'll die gently then"

...but it doesn't, and the place does back over 20 years,
i've probably been rude to some idm superstar without even
knowing it

so, again. it was not planned. but i'd call zilty the venn
diagram center between a locals' pub and an actively aging
cask of scotch

that, like, think of most boards like this that are either
a) still about, or b) not.

a) the ones still about have gone through a half-dozen
re-designs and a name change (maybe they can be "GearChadz"
next). because it's still a passion project

b) the ones gone, it stopped being a passion project; it
became a hassle. resolving disputes, fending off dupes, and
fuck it.

zilty be very, like, edge-of-the-fractal, in that, "fuck it"
but "it's still about" and "i don't have time to fix search.
most people would decide this is a good point to pull the
plug, but instead i think i'll just disable search and not
even announce anything"

keep up the good work. that is not sarcasm

makes me think of the cryptodrome's "HOFL" ~ Hold On For

mark my word, if it keeps defying gravity and refusing to
implode... accounts could be worth $$ on here someday

> Dub turbo almost killed it

i respectfully disagree. i remember it. my account is years
older; but i effectively didn't really get into it until
shortly before the dubturbo saga. i remember having a
wonderful time piling on the bandwagon and mocking it

the board's administration... well, no argument; no
childishly banhammering people for mocking it. more like,
"oh well, it was worth a shot, nevermind" and no hard
feelings.

since then it has become a beloved meme, arguably. and also,
arguably, never earned dubturbo a dime throughout the whole
arc

very much in the same pattern of "this is not how message
boards usually go. this was an accident. whatever; it works"

It was a great joke at that time. Only remember the meme.
Forgot about the story to be honest 😅
