Axelay, Salamander, blazing lasers, super parodius, star
parodier, star soldier, the 194X series…. Lots of weird
names I can’t rem.

snes:
pop´n Twinbee, fave for music and fun
r-type3, fave graphics style and music
axelay, overall greatness
parodius, must have

arcade:
air assault, fave overall, graphics, music and gameplay
raiden 2, dx, great music and gameplay
x-multiply, gritty and organic graphics, cool ship

played and own a lot more, so these are not just for novelty
or the only ones i knew, these are very playable, mostly
non-bullet-hell games with exceptional graphics and style.
if you dont like evading and blasting your way, however,
that what shmups are all about.

two days ago i played gyruss on my arcade cabinet and
crossed over to scrolling shmups. today i revisited the
unfinished shmups i built on, before i built my cabinet.
shame i prolly never get to finish em like i wanted to. ah
well at least couple of levels are playable.

always loved the darius series for its huge skeleton fishs
its a tough series though, lots to memorize by trial and
error.
so i had a hard time enjoying them on snes.

battle garega, just finished on 20ish credits,
very playable, did levels 1-3 on 1 credit,
cool enemy patterns,
lots of fast bassline and overall good music.
hard to see the good graphics on this, and,
im not a bullet hell type, but i liked how my mind is blank
from focusing on evading the shots.

sorry, didnt quite understand that post and didnt bother to
google, "blue on android", since i dont care about mobile
games. but here we go.

actually, yeah looks decent and could make me forget its on
a mobile too, but no shmup. i couldnt give my 2 cents about
analogue hardware issues, cause i dont own any either, just
saying. but then i go off topic a lot and im happy over
responses to that.

I like the oldies. 1942, Time Pilot, Phoenix and Galaga
'92.

Like Belb, I think the music in Thunderforce IV is great. In
other respects, I prefer Gynoug, probably my favourite
Megadrive shooter. Russeldust: Be sure to check it out, I
think it is the same Devs as Cho Aniki.

SNES, I really like all the Parodius games I've played.

Of the modern ones:
I like, but don't love Deathsmiles.
R-Type Final is pretty good.
Ikaruga is a 9/10 game for me.

There are a few PC indie abstract bullet hell ones by some
amateur Japanese developer that someone here put me onto 15
years or so back, that I used to really like.

Hey Pomme! Yep ibari, dodon…

Yeah, Ceri I’ve played gynoug and love it. Cho aniki is
also with flying people you control so I’m not surprised.
Though cho aniki is tenfold more insane.

Good shout out with thunder force IV. The third one is
pretty great as well.

I love the concept with Darius but I struggle to have fun. I
rem playing it in the arcade in the 80s with my older
brother and it felt so special. Loved played co-op with him
on gauntlet also.

Weirdly I suck a gradius but not at Parodius.

Not just a shoot em up but I have to mention Three Wonders.

Loved that so much and then took me 20 years to find the
game coz I couldn’t remember the name. Sorry I can’t
seem to lazy link from the phone anymore.

They’re not all silly hard and often repetition and memory
can work just as much as sheer skill.

repetition and memory requires A LOT of time though with a
game like garegga for example

almost 40, gaming all my life

but never really gave one of these a chance

if anyone is kind enough

tell me the very best one to buy on steam and I'll buy it
during this steam sale

ikaruga is likely to be the most reputable on steam
but it is pretty unique in its gameplay.
maybe the darius series is for you,
but i think the easiest approach would be:
Sine Mora
its a modern shmup that features nice graphics, doesnt
overload the screen with bullets and enemies is fairly easy
and has some cool boss fights. its not a pixel game though
it is 2d.

overall its a genre not really represented well on steam
apart from a few really color popping over the top bullet
hell games. like Mushihimesama and dodonpachi, which i
wouldnt recommend as a first, but are still very popular.

tbh, if you want a classic shmup experience you might be
better off with an emulator and play arcade games like the
1942 series, air assault, raiden or a snes game like
r-type3. or most of the other favourites people posted
earlier. just pick one according to your graphics appeal,
since its not just the gameplay its also the theme that
takes you into this world.

im curious about other poeples steam recommendations though.
havent given any games a chance on there since i find most
of the their featured graphics and style rather appalling
and there are still lots of great shmups on consoles and
emus left to play for me.

you could also give deltazeal a try,
looks very good to me.
clean and decent pixel graphics,
animated enemies look good.
most closely resembles battle garegga,
not the work of amateurs.

this seems like an interesting game, anyway

its not the same and even rather a tag for some games
than a subgenre imo

im not sure what kind of skill is needed for vampire
survivors or if it is a skill relevancy at all, but i love
the concept of being outnumbered against all odds. think it
would be fun to set a record time instead of a time limit.

actually i have an endless waves mode in one of the shmups i
made and one of the reasons i didnt publish/post is i
couldnt get the records into the html database.
the other one is ages away from being finished simply
because

ikaruga: purchased. appreciate it!

Yeah I used to work at a pizza place and we had one of these
games on an arcade station in there. It was nested in a
Mortal Kombat 1 cabinet, and I was always pissed we didn't
have MK instead, that was my shit. I forget the name of the
bullet hell game, but it was the only one I ever played.

wikipedia puts bullet hells as a subgenre of shoot 'em ups.
i guess: they're the same and one more bullets, but i'm no
expert

so what i liked best about shoot 'em ups (i realized
skimming through this) was upgrading your weapons
systems. so this is where i mention what is also probably
not a true shoot 'em up, but a (more recent) favorite: The
Binding Of Isaac
