i've used google news as... well, i'll just compulsively
open that and see what's going on. but they've "updated" it
again, and there's just... loads more wasted space, crappy
badly-customized content, since i never log in. i could live
with it, but instead i am thinking: should i still be using
this anyways?

searching for "google news alternatives" resulted in... so
much freaking spam. lots of sites, like quora, that i have
learned to never bother clicking on. loads of other sites
clearly just juicing the search results. nothing that seems
written by a human. typical

RSS is still a thing, right? so i think the thing to do is
find a comfy RSS reader, then sit down and cobble together
all the various news sources i care about? do major sites
still do RSS?

out of anything, this seems fairly plum to roll my own, but
direction would help

RSS reader, still spam results. some of which were in the
previous spam results. like: "Feedly" ? fuck this crap.
stupid cutesy web 3.0 name. app/web only; i'm sure you have
to log in. it's like wine: you can spot good (or bad) wine
through... what did they name it, and what's the style of
the label? there are about five separate categories there
and once you know them it's easy to avoid the crap. and
feedly, fuck no

so let's try "desktop rss reader" instead of "rss reader"
and i'm getting "RSS readers that work in windows 11"

i think i'll just see what apt-get has on tap

What you want is Feedbro, RSS reader as a browser extension.
Works in Firefox and Chrome.

Feedbro

i trust the federal news site of my government
it can be very local though

you know what i find amazing is wikipedia
all the talk in the news about how many tanks and weapons
germany is asked of made me wonder what are the other
countries of the world doing so far.
here is a list of foreign support of ukraine
i found this is quite impressive.

i hadn't considered wikipedia for news; thanks.

that it worries me a bit, though... that i read wikipedia
like people play video games. that is, like, binging really.
information makes me high

so i think i should stick with RSS of interest.

Wikipedia is infiltrated by the CCP and will not tell you
how they ran over Hujin Tao with a tank in dreaded Chinaman
Square.

google reader so ive used theoldreader since about that
time. the free version is limited to 100 feeds but its more
than enough.

feedbro about works except it expects me to clear the
million feeds i'm subscribing to before the toolbar icon
will show me more. is there a way to just click next? or
say, who gives a fuck about marking as read? but otherwise
good so far. discovering how quaint local news sites can be
with broken rss feeds

Yeah that's the one thing that's a bit funky. There's a main
reload button, in blue on the left, that refreshes all
feeds. But there's also a reload button on the right that
refreshes the view of whatever folder or feed is currently
selected.

After refreshing all feeds, if you select a different folder
or feed, that will also give you an updated view.

ohhhh wait are you talking about the mini view when you just
click the toolbar button on the browser? I dunno I always
open the full feed reader lol.

not going to read anywhere near everything; just need to
plumb in the right taps for a roaring froth i can just pluck
stuff from. so yeah, i just want a recent salad; don't care
about stuff falling off the edge of the earth

"All Items" in the reader seems about it
May as well hide it from the toolbar.

feedbro has actually been p. good, thx tony. but it's very
cumbersome to organize. that, does this even need to be a
browser plugin? lots is readable over just RSS, and clicking
a link works the same from a dedicated app.

and also CNN puts some of the worst trash in their RSS
feeds, just clearly "organic" advertising; most trendy
sweater this season
and they have a bajillion RSS feeds
that overlap while, like, i managed to get a mere one (1)
feed out of The Hill and Politico, who freaking rock for
just... here's text, a photo; whole thing. i've just deleted
the CNN "top stories" feed because that's the most rotten of
the lot; prone to organic garbage. they still have stuff i
want to read, but... this is like what fox news RSS would
do, i imagine
