We buy a lot of product from a company in Sri Lanka.
It's been a total disaster.

I've driven autos (tuk-tuks) all around the country.
Was never impressed - but I do feel for the people.

As usual, governments create suffering instead of
prosperity.

mostly just a reaction to bbc world service just being a
steady stream of utter disasters in far-away places, loads
of them, constantly, to the point where i am like: is this
the one in africa or the other thing? that so many i'm
getting them jumbled up

and at that point i just sort of throw my hands up in the
air, and say: you know what? i didn't cause this, i cannot
do anything about it, why should i care, why am i even
listening to this? and turn off the NPR icecast floe

but it's kind of like "care" is a muscle and it's tired of
running a marathon some days. and nothing against sri lanka
itself. just, oh hell no, not another cognitive/emotional
burden. get lost

sorry sri lanka has screwed teh ur produkt.

My happiness increases inversely to the amount of corporate
media I consume.

BBC/NPR/CNN/Fox/MSNBC/YouTube/etc

That stuff sells you stuff while rotting your brain. It is
so awful.
I don't pay any of those companies attention whoring
anymore.

I am free and feel great.

I am also always surprised when someone says 'I was watching
BBC/NOR' - I just tune out. I know the next thing they say
will be stupid - so I ignore it.

Corporate media is the ruin of what's left of democracy, in
my view.

(sorry, feel better telling the truth)

^^^ typos from a rotted brain, clearly...

so i tune into NPR and it seems good at first: "...you might
have to take care of an aging parent, you might have to keep
that car until you're on a first-name basis with the
tow-truck driver, you might have student debt... and you do
these things so that when you get to the point you no longer
can work, or want to work, you then have the resources to
take care of yourself"

and thus far i am thoroughly nodding and saying yes this is
important conversation; there is policy there

then they cut to the break and say: "we're talking about the
finances of black women in america" and i immediately close
the connection to npr's icecast. though i quite feel all of
this myself, i am not a black woman, so i really have no
business here

if it makes any sense -- like, zero personal bias, just a
pragmatic assessment -- everyone is going through shit right
now, and that makes it a rather poor approach to say "well
i'm going through some shit because i'm a black woman" and
stuff that noise can we just say "things are rough now" and
have a hug and then "alright now what can we do about it"

tuned back in. bbc complaining about how only 20 of 400
roles went to latinos and james franco is playing fidel
castro after sexual harassment allegations. i have to say i
fail to see how these two things fit together, even though
i'm not arguing with you when you say it seems the guy went
over the line and should feel the heat for it

then they cut to shouting out sponsors and this is why
people just watch mr. beast on youtube; i hate that guy more
than anything

i guess, it's a point about mixing concerns as a tactic to
claim ownership over a grievance, with all the dividends
provided. there are genuine concerns a black woman has that
others in america do not. white actors regularly get cast in
ethnic roles, the same way a school system will buy 40
licenses for windows 11 every year. james franco did
something like "learn to do intimate acting scenes with
james franco" and then obviously some girls sign up thinking
it's just what it says on the tin and pay him a bunch of
money for this and.. it's not what it says on the tin.

but then you take it too far; you start saying "as a black
woman, i have student debt," or "as a black woman, i have to
take care of an aging parent" and at that point you are
hardcore tuning everyone out from any sort of sympathy in
your direction because everybody got problems

like this youtube link will get pulled because it's doing
weird ugly shit to dodge copyright cop and i've linked it
because the ones that don't require age-verification because
there's some f-bombs. i hate soccer moms

i guess i just feel like what i'm hearing is stuff like "the
system is racist because james franco abused some poor girls
and he's now been cast as fidel castro" and "the system is
racist because i am black and i have student debt and an
aging parent" and it's not like you can't find obvious
places to call the system racist, but... step the fuck off

i guess it's kind of like i just put it all out of my mind;
shrug it off. but eventually i just need to rant a bit and
somehow i wind up here

i really miss when NPR was just weird cool interesting
things like an hour journey into some weird specific ethnic
music, when i could actually tune into 'wait wait don't tell
me' by accident but now blink and you'll miss it. instead
it's all syndicated TED talk BBC world poop

im interpreting this as "the problems I have are compounded
by the fact that I am from a minority group"* and not "the
system is racist because I am black and I have an aging
parent and student debt"

*they're most likely marginalized and are hit even harder by
everyday problems. being part of a minority itself isn't the
problem

You talk a lot

i'll be shorter: i'll get right around to giving a fuck
about them and their problems shortly after i feel like i
have a moment to take a breath and fight my own personalized
pile of shit that america is dumping on me right now. that
they are more fucked than me is not really something i have
time to think about. that, frankly, anyone who does purport
to give a shit is probably just virtue hoarding. and who the
hell are you anyways

i guess there is the obvious converse: if i weren't so mired
in shit in my own country i might actually have the capacity
give a fuck about other countries; it's not that i lack the
ability to do so

over hearing about third-world drivel when there's shit
washing up on my doorstep and sorry i'm busy

I don't have time to think about other people's problems
either but that's how I interpreted their statement. Just
don't read the news

i hope you feel awful now

you are right to not feel responsible
for the former president being a crook.
my gf cannot watch the news btw.
the state the world is in is absolutely terrifying
and actually giving a fuck is not easy at all.
just by your reaction i feel, you still do.

"...the flooding in pakistan, i'm sure you've seen the
pictures" --BBC Newshour

ummm, pictures? what flooding?

but, rewind, i know someone from pakistan. wicked sense of
humor. dead ringer for a friend from high school, like, "oh
wow i have [that guy] back this is great" and i miss working
with him for that reason.

but then he's from pakistan and a muslim and none of this
really comes up until he mentions he's going on a pilgrimage
at lunch one day -- like ten people at the table -- and
everyone like, wut?

and after that we started asking questions -- mostly others
did faster than i thought to; i just listened -- and the
most fascinating stuff came out

that if you're a single female and a pakistani mum is
staring at you kind of funny, she's looking for a wife for
her son. that he believes in arranged marriage because it's
"convenient." which... ok, but... wow.

that when he lived in pakistan, people would show up at your
house with guns, and say give us all the cash, we're
searching the house and if we find any you don't tell us
about we'll shoot one of you. and his mum cracks halfway and
gives up the stash. and they just wanted to get the fuck out
of pakistan

so then they do and run some convenience stores -- really --
and the guy was held up at gunpoint multiple times --
really. now he's a talented software engineer and quietly
hilarious once you get to know him, and you'd never hear a
hint of any of this unless you asked.

was never about the people impacted. it was just jfdkgdfg i
know pakistan has problems listening to this just making me
upset
