Watched it 3 times. It's good, bit messy, lead synth a bit
loud, like the drums. Probably not the target audience so
much since I'm truly only interested in compositional output
rather than gear and skill based playing, both of which you
seem to possess in abundance. I don't know what any of that
shit you're using is, and have never really cared, but it
sounds pretty good.

Do you think your output would benefit from recording all
this into a DAW and heavily editing?

so i took a high school class that was a lab full of mac G3s
with a korg X5D each. after a year of that, i got a cable
modem, went on summer break, and discovered you could pirate
synthesizers off the internet. and i was hooked; next year i
was pirating everything i could during the week and looking
forward to trying them out during the weekend

then fast-forward a few years; it's so fucking overbuilt. it
takes me fucking hours to do anything i'm sick of this. i
think prodigy liam had a similar moment with his overbuilt
hardware setup before switching to reason, i believe

then i started getting hardware and just abandoned all the
plugs. i'd never really played anything live. guy who was
probably my most diehard fan actually got furious at me but
i refused to budge. because, you know what? this is fun
again now

that was approximately 2007. and now it finally sounds as
good, if not better, than the shit i spent hours on with
plugs, and i'm recording it live instead of spending hours
editing.

but the real kybosh, editing noep, about half of my setup is
a giant, lovingly tuned feedback network of delays and
busses and i'm not even sure it'd still work if you tried to
put a computer in the middle to grab all the magic... and
even then, how do you get it back out?

if i had a massive budget, i'm sure i could swing it. do it
exactly as i'm doing and get multitrack instead of the
classic stereo to disk. but i don't. so no edits, no
arguments, and i have to say this has forced me to get
better.

cool man I'm glad you found a way to make it fun. I think
the second you start making anything for other people the
motivation switches from intrinsic to extrinsic and the soul
is lost. Getting a few listens is nice though, regardless.

keep it up, good luck

i guess. patching like: buss 3-4 of mixer goes into moog
grandmother's utility section, attenuator into high pass;
important for ear tuning. usually i'll then run that into
the moog's arp gate input, but no, that day it's just going
into osc 2 pitch, osc 1 out into osc 2 lin FM, back to
utilities to use the mult to feed the lfo wave out to gate
in, then finally lfo s/h out is what goes back and splashes
bursts of arp. but of course this is a modern midi-moog and
it receives clock, notes, so the arp spam is quantized, i'm
feeding it notes and clock from the keystep pro, but then i
can still just reach out and fill in some additional notes
at an appropriate moment of frisson (1:40- )

and so do i capture the midi somehow, too, the unique
one-off arp spam that's effectively a poor bastard's
envelope follower coming off of a buss that... well, a few
things go into it

i'm waiting for someone to finally understand why i can't
multitrack + edit this shit without a few orders of
magnitude more equipment. i expect to be waiting for a bit i
have been told this so many times

you don't see it in the vid but there's also a behringer
model D (track 6) run through a big muff pi but then
grandmother's arp's KB velocity out goes model D LC gate and
then filter output of moog grandmother goes into model D osc
1 CV, but this is all just window dressing for the external
audio fed into it

just, like, again, even if i intercepted the signals, it's
such an organic salad that edits would be impossible because
all the quibits won't have the same spin

I don't know what any of that stuff is that you mentioned.
Like any of it. Been making tunes for 20 years but the
second it becomes arp velocity model D LC gatge 1 cv midi
moog recieves clock into keystep pro to send my osc 2 lin
FM,. My eyes glaze over.

The output is all that's important. Just learn to sequence
and throw a few effects on. Or spend that time building
crazy sequencers themselves like autechre. Build everything
in an understandable session and call it good.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't think anythings stopping you from recording that
straight into ableton and tweaking without "loads more
gear," other than an extreme OCD

i'll be simpler, i think i can.

track 11/12 (which i'm just using as mono) is the output of
the behringer ms-1, which i am actually using as a submixer
of sorts for a couple of the drum parts. the actual sources
for these drum tracks have been disabled from going to the
main stereo out buss, but since the track is enabled, the
aux sends that allow pre still work... so you either hear
these parts mixed through the MS-1, or leaking out through
layers of delay pedals, or both.

so, most obviously, i already have a layer of mixdown i
cannot really record the sources from, and meanwhile, both
those sources are coming out four or five other channels
with everything feeding back on itself, and... i'm not sure
i actually have individual channels anymore, thanks.
multitrack, i'd wind up with a bunch of stuff that sounds
the same when i play it all back at once, but even ducking
aside a bad note on anything... it's all so bled into each
other you may as well awkwardly mute half the track and then
we're into dfhjgdfg manual edits on live funk that never
ever come out quite like you want them to even after half a
day on 20 seconds of audio

sequencing... i mean... you'll note i essentially did a
small micro-version of "seeping in the sunshine" in the
middle of that track. i didn't plan that, i simply felt like
it. so i just played a bunch of another track i'd done in
the middle

and, like, that was meant to make the eyes glaze over. like:
do you know how wired into itself everything is? no? have a
sip, here

but i should calm down. i've had this discussion too many
times before. i should really just say

thanks for listening.

i guess i would also add some... what was it shulgin called
it? qualitative comments?

to me, this track roughly breaks down into three sections:
the part before i start rehashing seeping in the sunshine
and gradually fade my arc back into what i was doing [oh,
shit, yeah, right, i forgot], then a third section with a
grainy bendy sample

it's kind of bothering me. the grainy bendy sample, i swear
i've lifted that from somewhere, or the feel of it at least.
it's on the tip of my tongue, as they say -- i can feel the
answer in there, but i can't pull it out. if you know who
i've ripped off here, please do let me know.

that grainy bendy sample programming, though. it was a day
or two before, i was up, shall we say, way past my bedtime,
to the point where i am having to catch my face from falling
into the digitakt. i have actually recorded entire tracks
in this state, actually. but instead i am just driven; i
can't stop fucking with this sample, i get it kind of right,
then i mess with it, then i've totally changed it, rinse and
repeat. i come back the next day, and it's like: i really
have no clue what i did here, but this is fucking dope

so, like, i tried just buzzing it back in, like 2014, and it
was like: oh my god i had no idea how annoying hair was
until i got rid of it. and i really tried it because it was
summer, and i thought: oh, it'll be lower-maintenance

...but it's not. you have to keep up on it or it reliably
approaches a hal-fgrown back stage and people were all "you
look better with hair" even before that hit

so i gave up on that, but was like, yeah, might go there
again someday

now global is worming and i've gone into it with more actual
thought and i purchased a proper buzzer and all that. and i
have to say. this is, kind of, like, a missing element.
trying to sleep my whole life, i'll wake up from sleep
pooled in sweat, or then i'm too cold and i can't sleep,
back and forth. without hair i seem to thermally regulate
like i meant to.

but, by far the best thing: being able to splash water on
your scalp after walking 1.1mi in 85f heat and it's like,
holy shit, instant cool down, that is just amazingly
effective, it's a trip

i always kind of wondered if monks shaved their heads for
the same reason you put a heatsink on a CPU. then once i
tried shaving my head, like, if you're serious about
meditation, it genuinely does help your focus. so, oh,
that's it. now i think it's both

out the reviews and what's a good buzzer that won't overheat

my mega-posts, right. that was kind of why... i was almost
desperate, like, i have to get one of these on video. people
don't understand. they don't get it

and yeah, drawing shapes on the microfreak, the moment where
my right hand is playing a solo on the microfreak and the
rest of me is looking at the mixer and clearly puzzling over
something, and i make a "what the heck?!" gesture with my
left hand, meanwhile right robot claw is effectively a
spawned copy of ymslef

went and found it, drop in at 2:00 for a little lead-in and
watch right robot claw vs. where my head seems to go at
2:05-2:10 and beyond

[essentially: i'm looking at the signal/overload lights on
each channel and something is not correct. ...and,
eventually... oh, the monotron cutoff is way too clamped
down. and fuck it, that sounds good, let's just switch on
that and the other delay at once and see how that goes, and
i get these lovely rhythmic cascading waves of noise, and
great, i don't have to stop the recording {and meanwhile
right robot claw still shredding the whole time, as all that
is kind of what's going through my head. i solved it more or
less in the nick of time before it ran out of buffer}]

it's kind of subtle. but i played the vid back, and i'm
like: holy shit. you can actually see it. i
absolutely did not expect to capture, like... arguable
proof.

but i don't really care if anyone goes back to bother and
look at this moment. i'm just happy i caught it. like i
said, i didn't expect to, i really just wanted to prove that
i do all this shit live and yes i can shred thx. and i got
such a lovely bonus

yeah fair nevermind my long-winded nerd ramble

short version is i'm quite happy with how this turned out,
but also feeling quite smug about all the times someone was
like "oh fuck off you're not playing that live it's all on
the computer"

hope to continue along these lines.
