when it comes to local pizza places, once i know the area,
my brain just begins to spit out some hairy graph like the
abstract display that's supposed to describe how difficult a
DDR level is, and why.

this one place, they are kind of a pain. but they have the
best greasy pizza.

or, well, they did. and they've become more of a pain.

a bit before 7, they close at 9, and their online ordering
is borked. so i call. after one ring i am redirected to a
voicemail system with the guy recording the greeting saying
DO NOT LEAVE A MESSAGE ON THIS SYSTEM hang up and call back
and press 1 to place an order

then the system beeps and begins recording my message.

"A MESSAGE ON THIS SYSTEM" i say proudly, and then hang up.
i figure sometime today someone was like *sssnerk* this
fuckin guy

but, yes, i do as instructed beyond that, and the girl on
the line is like "ummm we're closing in like five minutes"
and when i point out their web site says otherwise i can
feel her start to sdfjgkdfg a little and so i'm all "no no
it's cool just could you fix that?" and she's all "ummm
thank you for bringing that up."

reality, bullshit filtered: technically, they should have
taken that order, but they didn't feel like it, when i
called they deftly pushed a button and redirected me to
voicemail in a manner that was utterly disorienting; they --
she -- did not expect me to call back and actually beat her
to the draw on the phone system. like, i pressed 1 before
she could blam me and she was genuinely flustered to answer

anyways, i get a pizza today, finally, after an hour and a
half, and it is lukewarm and soggy. what happened, guys?
this shit used to be nice and properly burnt to a crisp; now
it's soggy.

given their phone system they're absolutely ripe for me to
go longmont potion castle on them, but i think i may just
kick pizza because this was the best place and now they suck
and fuck eet

i get the impression that a lot of people selling things
think people will just keep paying forever no matter how
much they cut things.

the fried chicken is shit too. done with this place

Closing?? I want to speak to the manager!!!

on the contrary. as i kind of indicated, she cringed
nervously as i pointed out their website said they were open
for at least another hour ("we're closing in five minutes"
was more than an hour before). i really figured they
were just all "fuck it we're knackered let's close" and
that's fine. she said they'd look into fixing the site. they
will not. it was all just a very delicate pretext for "you
do know this a bit bullshit right" "welll ummm uhhh i" "no
it's cool, don't worry about it, i'm just saying"

...that it is yet another bit of nonsense from your
establishment, and, no, i do not need to speak to the
manager, i'm not going to chew you out, in fact i'm going to
actually kind of cooingly soothe you a bit [for real --
because i could hear she was like some nervous 16yo girl].

but it is a polite warning that i've about had it with
attempting to order pizza here and may cease to bother if
things continue this way

and here we are. yeah, think i'll just stop ordering pizza.
i don't order much, just, sometimes...

try the extra-crispy brooklyn-style cardboard instead of
regular cardboard crust

it was shitty, even by their standards, the pizza was a mess

yeah, that was really the clincher. no pizza tonight? even
arguably within a reasonable amount before closing? i am
bummed but i'll live. next day, pizza, and it's shitty? and
the fried chicken inconsistent; one burned, another, like...
is this cooked enough? so yep. last time i actually got a
pizza out of them they killed it, but i think i'ma leave
them to think about what they've done for a good bit at
least.

cape cod hours. that's where i've felt this before. cape cod
is a seasonal economy and, unless it's the peak summer
season, places will just close early because they feel like
it. i didn't press the matter, but my roommate did: why do
you guys keep closing early? the sign on the door says
you'll be open then and you are consistently not

the reply: "oh, well, no one was coming in so we closed"

and that man did have a talent for hitting the nail on the
head. he replied, "well maybe if you were actually open when
you said you were instead of being closed, people would
actually show up"

he reported the clerk did not really have an answer for this
one.

for scale, i would cite that even stop and shop would
sometimes just decide, "oh good enough let's close two hours
early"

then they fight any proposed infra upgrades because it will
"bring too many people" whilst complaining the local economy
sux

i guess some people simply don't want to be in business,
deep down

i'm just speculating, but i think it's a bad time to eat
out, now. local bar, similar situation but less dramatic. i
think costs are squeezing both labor and ingredients so
prices have gone up but you get worse food.

get a bunch of spices aswell, u can make loads of food in
ur house

i mean, i have this. i do a fantastic stir fry. my landlady
was all "do you mind if i grow veggies in your yard" and go
right ahead. and i made a stir fry for first time in ages
and picked peas right off the vine and threw the whole pods
in

but then gods, this is work. like four hours at least.
cleaning up afterwards, particularly miserable. if i didn't
have, like, a job i am looking to replace, leading into when
am i going to take care of the cavity i suspect i am working
on [insurance], leading into how i'm up to re-sign my lease
and that in and of itself is cool but i need to research the
proposed rail expansion because i could be signing on for
hell noise inconvenience there. and the fucking electricity
provider switch

and i can't do like... i used to be into the meatzza, but
recently i'm quite religious about greasy plain cheese onto
which i dump a bunch of salt. and i can't do that at home,
on my own.

so there are limits. but i bought some eggs and sourdough
bread from the farmer's market and i haven't made eggy toast
in ages and that's way easier than stir fry.

cape cod hours are roughly correspondent to hip-hop time, in
which macy gray shows up at fatboy slim's studio three hours
late for the recording of "love life"

i also got a bunch of veggies and some ground beef. so i'll
probably do tacos with veggies and then some oemlettes with
the rest of the veggies

honestly a lot of what i eat these days is, like... peanuts.
bananas. mozzarella cheese sticks. just grazing constantly.
but you need a few solid ones regularly; you can't do it all
that way

i've really never made any effort to go vegan or vegetarian
or even cut down on meat but i read this thread and,
interesting, i've really cut a lot of the meat out of my
diet without noticing. just either expensive or inconvenient

to be fair, i have a pair of [the large, 1lb] willow tree
chicken pot pies in my freezer, and i will totally plow
through that whole thing myself if i have a particularly bad
day.

place, take-out buffalo tenders, i have to walk about a mile
in total, yeah, we needs this still. i pray they don't go to
shit too

it's not a chain. they have two or three stores or something
and they've been about since the 80's or something

no, i think it's just supply chain inflation labor shortage
etc. and yeah i pretty much decided to stop ordering food,
except for the one take-out italian place that's cheap and i
have to walk a bunch, but that's why it's cheap, and.. just
bought a bunch of ingredients instead.

and, tldr, it's just a bad time to dine out right now.
they'll be understaffed, crabby; things won't be fresh.
prices will be absurd. i mean i'd already noticed and dialed
it down, but recently it really has had the air of "you know
what, fuck off"

i get that a lot in the news, everybody hiring/needing
personnel, food prices going up, but i´ve eaten a lot out
these days, spending quite some. because we spent the
weekend out of town and celebrated beforehand and i must say
i havent noticed anything unusual over here. at all.
cant afford going out/ordering in general anyway because
home cooking/drinking is cutting costs at least by half, so
5-10% or even 30% price change wouldnt make a difference for
me and i havent even seen higher prices yet.

from the other perspective, my boss who cooks 500+
kindergarten meals a day, has noticed a price jump in his
supplys and frozen goods, but its far from doubling. more
like 10% overall. which already pisses him off along with
the raise of miniumum wage from 10€ to 12€, because he
cannot raise his prices yet due to contracts with the city.
but hell still be fine, making money and be able to raise
prices not too long aswell. so no harm here neither.

but what i have noticed is people ordering food like crazy
within the last 3 years. like nonstop. some ordering more
than home cooking. neighbours, friends, workplaces, even
completely decadent grocery deliveries which also have the
same cost explosions and personnel to handle as the
restaurants and i find this rather ridiculous.

Your best bet is to get a cheese pizza or something simp at
the grocery store, buy some fresh produce or meats and
spices and top it yourself before throwing it in the oven.
Real nice stuff a man can do to a pizza in the privacy of
his own home. If you get to any pizza shops, make sure you
know who's making your food if you want something good,
there's enough people who work in the food service industry
that don't care about the quality of what they're serving or
haven't learned on it yet. Store pizza is cheap and still
supports farmers and shit. Picking out ingredients is fun.
Do it with your family or friends. Watch a movie or make a
jam or play a game. You like games? I got some games we can
play.
