Why is it the norm (with uk people mostly) to have a go at him? He’s a treasure. Watched life on the road again the other night and the drugs might have helped but I laughed and cried. Not many comedians can do that to me. Same with Extras, Derek, and Afterlife (thought at times he pushes it with that one). With uk stars once they get too big it seems inevitable. they don't have a go at him over Extras. the context: do you think it's a good idea to punch down at trans people, while they're extremely marginalized already, to the point that they face extreme dangers in our society already? trans people, mostly trans women, are many more times likely to be killed or otherwise bodily harmed, just for trying to be themselves. disallowing trans women a public bathroom is a direct attempt to erase trans people from society. it's disgusting and harmful to joke about trans women going around raping people, while they face violence themselves already. Gervais' comedy special appears to be full of these transphobic dog whistles, for instance also 'i don't hate trans people, just trans 'ideology''. giving equal rights to marginalized groups feels like an attack to themselves, to people like Gervais. it confronts them with their own freely received privileges. privilege itself made it so they never had to look into it before. it's good this is now changing |

i appreciate that this is going to sound conceited but most ppl don't understand how comedy works. a joke is a proposition and not a fact. gervais and the more obvious frankie boyle have talked about this ad nauseum. it seems overly obvious both comedians are deliberately dragging you into their comedic vice and i love them all the more for doing that. but gervais is a great writer but not a good standup. |

I mean... OBVIOUSLY I don't know enough about it, and I have said ignorant, unkind things in the past. Recently I got in touch with a very old friend from college, and her Terry (not Thier real name) born a boy, has, and you'll have to forgive my clumsy language, displayed feminine "leanings" since about 3. My friend is incredibly supportive but does also struggle with it all. But I did have a conversation with her (my friend) for about 7 hours and I do have a better understanding. My partner's daughter is quite militant about it and you can't remotely discuss anything without it going Nuclear and someone not "feeling safe". I dont know why it's become a thing, it's been around since the beginning of time. All that jars with me is the aggression aimed at, and this is the only time I will say this, cis women. |

I might be missing something enlightening and for that I feel a bit silly. To think this is really about Ricky Gervais makes me realise you and a few others really take me for a fool, and just simplify me.
