LAZY_TITLE

have literally not recorded a track in months. but then i
hear some chords i want to hear on the BBC, and, heck, i
shouldn't, it's 4AM, but... but, will it still work?

seems like it does

thx

i was actually kind of nervous to pick it up again, cold,
after a few months. you can't judge right after hitting
record at 4am, but i listen today, and... yeah, p. good. the
color-y arp just before 2m, i should have swept that up into
the dub tornado during the breakdown along with everything
else, but it still works fine as sort of a skeleton inside
the tornado. and i would have gotten that without thinking
if i were in practice

then i think: you know what, i think i've put the 10,000
hours in. practice will help but really now all i have to do
is stay in good physical shape to maintain my knob agility

p.s. -- 45 minutes messing with noises, hit record and it
didn't take off. walked around the block, smoked a zig, went
inside, hit record, nailed it well enough. total time less
than an hour

Lovin the hip hop funk.

I don't buy you did it in an hour, maybe the mix were
hearing here, but these sounds would have taken longer to
build.

I like the vocal sounding freak out starting around 2:25,

what kind of synth is that that comes in around 1:40? that
bright lead?

this is a great track.

why not?

i used wavestation (preset, no time), arturia microfreak
(preset i previously tweaked and saved, then loaded and
tweaked a bit more, two minutes). my friendly casio, it's
already patched up about how i want it, i just need to spend
another (two minutes) tuning in the crunch properly for the
ambient temperature and its mood; then it's just a stock ROM
casio beat sync'd over midi. with crunch. i spent five
minutes, perhaps, with the ms1, i just kind of mashed in
some notes for the pattern, mostly just fussing with the
waveform mix and LFO time. about half of the rest of the
time was programming the drums on the arturia keygigger pro,
along with the wavestation preset sound loop. then the
balance was warming up, practicing for a bit, taking a stab,
failing, going for a walk, straight back up to the gear,
done. i used the reaper xcomp with supersolid2 just turned
it down a tad

i guess the disconnect might come from the fact that i'm
doing everything else live. all the delay, the dub, the
fades, the cuts, the manic shuffle. i particularly delight
in sweeping the octave knob up and down on the ms1 while
fussing with the monotron delay and boss dd-8 i have mounted
on suspension scissor arms and whoops time to dart over and
mash out a chord of mute-button presses on the mixer pull
the delay back

i might have video somewhere. not of this tho

shoot oh yes the digitakt. i just turned it on and flipped
through patterns and the kick drum loop was just one i'd
made earlier and saved. i thought: that works. and on we go

i also re-used it for the thad trax.

and actually i remember programming the microfreak but i
think i actually didn't bother using it in the track, ha.

my attitude there, it's okay if you program ten things and
then only wind up with three of them on the recording. it's
about having a palette of options and as long as the right
ones are there that's all that matters

808 is a roland xp-10 run through a tube preamp. i use it
for other stuff sometimes, but no, it's like brushing my
teeth, perhaps a bit under a hundred button presses required
to set it up for how i want it to belch 808 to the tubes.
nothing new, it's the same old shit. if it works this good
why. fuck. with. it.

you know... i can give you a gear list for claire, my
general setup, but i can't tell you precisely how the knobs
on the moog were set. because that was, like, almost a year
ago?

i have details of cheboygan recording now, that i will not
have in a year. so i'll note some down.

pre-folderol ~ i also have the mixer's built-in aux set to 1
(rev hall 1) and i have the moog grandmother's spring reverb
wired up as an aux send also.

~ very early on in the track, i decide i am not happy with
my waveform mix at all, actually, and, i fuss with it, and i
wind up with just the suboscillator. hmm, i don't usually do
that. i nudge the volume up to compensate. then, later, when
i begin sweeping the octave knob, it's like: hey wow! that
sounds super actually. like, i was genuinely surprised, and
i had to remind myself to get over it you're recording a
track here

~ a bit later, that spot where you hear the panning suddenly
go wide and into space, that's me thinking, "oh, heck, i
forgot i had that" and i switch on the moog's reverb return
channel (1). but everything is set up as a feedback network
and the output of the spring reverb immediately begins to
bleed into the mixer reverb and my delay machinery. at the
time, i could hear i got a bit more space in there, cool,
keep going... but it was only later, on hedfones, that,
fucking shit, that sounds great actually! and so i used the
same trick again in octothad. but yeah setup is not really
great for stereo separation and since i'm renting i don't
want to shell out for the incredibly expensive sticky wall
bassbins.
