good search engines

what are good search engines now? because most of the ones
i try seem to be pretty shit, these days.

the other night, NPR played a snippit of JJ Cale's "Call The
Doctor" as bump music, and, not knowing it, i began
searching the lyrics i heard on the internet.

i try duckduckgo first, obviously. somebody call for a
doctor i think i'm sick been over a week
and i get a
bunch of fucking shit back about covid. i add the word
"lyrics" before the lyrics and i get the same crap. i try
google and i get the same crap; covid test blah blah fuck
off

point is -- so often i run a web search now, and i feel like
the nuance has all but disappeared. you're reliably jammed
into the factory farm; the dumbest, most mass-market
interpretation of your query. it used to be that google felt
uncannily clever; that's what made the bastards. now it's
collapsed into being a phone menu with a tedious list of
options, none of which are what you want

so what's good now. is that altavista thing any better?

i mean you search for a PDF manual the last thing you want
is the sites that are everywhere; they're crap

to whoever runs all those sites poisoning search results for
service manuals, i hope you die slowly and painfully over
hours and hours after your foot gets trapped under a parked
crate truck containing 20 tons of returned counterfeit goods

i'd also like to remind google that, while i may run adblock
and stymie your every attempt to eat your way into my life
like a termite (you hate me for it [how dare i not recognize
the glory of india via surrendering my digital identity]) --
i am still the person people call when asked which tech
thing to choose
