so deeply on the fence about this thing. i used trackers for
a stretch growing up [musically], but once i got reason 1.0
i stopped bothering. then it's a weird time in my life, half
my gear gone, just started messing about with milkytracker
as a joke. it's so, so... crappy. you can apply a
basic 3 or 10 band graphic eq to a sample, for example, but
there is no undo. if you mess up, you have to reload the
sample and carefully program in all the parameters again. so
my names for the instruments are like a sample name and then
just shorthand for parameters in case i have to blow it away
because shit shit too much 500hz

so i made, i dunno, a bunch of phone doodles with it. let's
do a joke vsnares track! obvious choice. alright, aphex.
vibert

but then i'm hooked. gradually, i forget this was supposed
to be a cornball joke music setup, and make more and more
complex stuff. then suddenly i'm making some of the most
hyper detail-oriented music i've ever made, because, like,
there's no mixer. you have to manually set the volume of
every single note; type in the fades with hex codes. that
it's like carving a beautiful chair from a block of wood,
using only a pen-knife. that i drove myself to the brink
with that shit, wandering around the house, arguing with
myself about which hex codes, before i finally crack it and
run back to the computer. for 15 hours

that hardware, you just kind of sit down and do it.
trackers, you're fussing with hex codes and up for three
days. so, much as i do respect what trackers do, the
headspace they foment... making a "hardware tracker," i
dunno, can't you just use renoise on a laptop if you want
that? because the laptop is hardware as much as polyend is
software

or neither, but who wants both? noone

yea cheap laptop with renoise suites me, but i reckon the
polyend tracker might be less hassle playing live like Umrbo
is doing

Someone bought it because of me and he didn't appreciate the
20ms delay time for the midi... If you want something to
control external midi try something else. I haven't made a
track on it yet. Working on a 2 track acid thing for my mate

pelotolyend slacker, yeah, that is a bit much

sounds like it's not for me because i mostly use hardware,
via midi. i've heard that usb, actually, can be tighter than
midi ever can. that you use the computer as the master clock
and slave all the gear off of that, and in that context,
perhaps it will be tight, and i would encourage you to try.
otherwise why bother. at least for hardware
