You have to perform a sysex bulk dump from the SD card. Move the SD card to the root directory of the compaq flash card.

i'm told the wavestation A/D originated when some engineer at sequential got annoyed no one was getting, like, it'll be like, you know? oh goddamn it
so he spies an old prototype prophet 2000 or something on the shelf, gathering dust... hmm, that... this... and he promptly takes a hacksaw to the prophet 2000 prototype, just need the A2D section fuck the rest
and before i knew any of this i was looking at the thing, and thinking "i wonder if there's any way to wire an audio input into... nah, you'd have to redesign it"
then later, just kinda like... ... well, shit, i really thought that was a stupid idea, but i guess it was better than i realized.
anyways, my question is: what's the best hacksaw?

Then export your slices onto your sampler and just make them think you’re dawless
to what end? does it sell records? t-shirts? does it keep people up at night, wondering how you're dawless? and you simply get a kick out of it?
i think it's really past the expiration date for that kind of thot anyways. the arturia keygigger (aka keystep pro), you can't even change some settings without plugging it into the computer. so it's dependent on the computer, a little, but it's not really a computer itself. inside, i figure, is the world's most stressed-out arduino hobby kit. they've been iterating this platform for like ten years and it's showing its age. sixteen projects? just sixteen? but that's all they can get out of 2mb flash memory or some shit
but, i digress. often
i don't sequence on the computer (for now, my mood may shift eventually) but i sequence on a demented computer that is dependent on the computer and then i record everything to the computer but the computer is just a stereo tape deck but then i use the computer to normalize, eq, x-comp
i've made things difficult enough for myself with my current setup that i could certainly claim dawless. just a stereo recording, from hardware, then some light mastering. but the computer has bled into the works; stains worse than tomato sauce. you'll never get it out. we all have at least some computer now
so i don't have Apple Universe Membership. but would not frown on anyone tossing an iPad next to an sh101 and some guitar pedals. i think now it's more about clever ways of combining what's available. new clever hybrids of old and new

No it’s more that software is unreliable (as is midi) but a sampler like an Octatrack is more stable. There’s no effect that didn’t load right, or an app that crashed. It doesn’t matter if you have tracks on different machines with different routings. You can write or sequence on whatever you want without caring about how would I do this live or on a stream, just collect the samples.
You can, also however post your jam in all your groups, even the dawless one without the comments devolving into, well what is a DAW?
I think there’s a market yet for live streaming gear and jams on YouTube and Twitch. Like RM1X jams or Electribes. The Nick Batt Sonicstate crowd where it’s half jam, half gear demo and then they monetize it with advertising or whatever. People wanting to buy a Deluge or something.

i like the crappiness of midi. i used to have a yamaha dx200 -- wonderful fing, dat -- and if there was a lot of stuff going thru the midi thru, it would get kind of constipated, and lag out. got a feeling for how to just kind of push it sliiightly too far after a while. then, great, the prophet vs arp remembers like 140 notes or something, let's just have it in what would be a freeze/paralyze instant feedback loop but is instead the dx200 becoming self-aware and deciding that it is funky. then, of course, using the bent casio with that one shit power brick, so whenever the sub hit a particularly bassy note, the casio feels lightheaded and splats around delightfully, chasing the dx200
i have a digitakt. it's wonderful. just, the little things -- proper mechanical switches; no membrane key bullshit. enough on-board storage to just work and not worry. but, really, even the manual is freaking insane. it is a whole 24-dimensional universe of secret button combo moves. that, i dunno, i have a feeling elektron doesn't push firmware updates anywhere near as often as arturia, because if the digitakt's manual is that tite i can only imagine how the firmware code is.
so, that is kind of the hardware thing: it used to be, if you shipped a nintendo cartridge with a bug, you had to recall them destroy them, make new ones. so you got shit fucking right the first time! then always-on internet console and suddenly games all ship with bugs because ehhh shit we'll just patch it later whatever
and even in a world of hardware that is just software on DSPs with some nice converters and knobs and an OLED, i do find "hardware" less likely to have bugs. but it used to never have bugs

really i hadn't thot about how i could do this with software. maybe you could. stuff like, what happens when you bounce a bunch of dubfx around an analog board, i guess, maybe, somehow, it could feel the same. i've never gotten the same feel out of a "DAW" however. but then we get to "the dx200 reliably shits out in this aesthetically pleasing way" and a power brick that's labelled "BROKEN / SPECIAL" and does arturia have a plugin for that?

but if you want to write on the laptop instead of having an attic full of [often charmingly] temperamental treasures, again, i will not frown on you. i believe in what gets the job done, what fits into your life, and all that. the job here is for me to enjoy myself making music and i find the physical machines much more charismatic and visceral. if you asked me to take this on tour i'd have a solid laugh before saying: uhhhh, noooooo

So a few years ago I lost the gear I had in a fire, a Waldorf q, asr-x pro, RY-30, and a bunch of volcas. I replaced them with an RM1X, Octatrack and got a tx81z on the cheap. RM1X is good enough to do a set with, no problem, but you’re going to sound like Underworld circa 96. If you want to sound like Download circa 95 with real drums and textures, movie samples, and have those atmospheres change quickly, like verse to chorus then you need to incorporate a sampler, or a computer but I’m like you I don’t want to just stare at a laptop.
But let me tell you about AUM and how amazing it is. Audio Units Mixer, it’s not really a DAW like Cubase or Ableton, it’s a mixer that syncs your real gear with apps and let’s you route them in interesting ways. The interface looks more like a platform for DJing with each app or hardware channel running on a deck almost. Then you can record the channel and bring back in the audio with your real time performance on a new channel and go again. There’s little sequencers and modules you can insert to do anything from piano rolls to generative phrasing, totally open platform.

But let me tell you about fucking plugins. That i have, literally, hundreds of tracks, years of work, that will never work outside of an airgapped windows XP box. That migrating everything out of it; i have to acknowledge it may never get there. Not even half of it. That I could probably finish some of the unfinished stuff now; I know more than I did then and I know why I got stuck there and I know how to get past it now. But I open up the project and shit where's the installer for waves native bundle from 2002?!
Discord, one of the better convos -- what stems, barbie? -- arose out of one of our here members being hired to extract the stems for, amongst other things, aqua's barbie girl. and it's some producer guy and it's all a mirror G4 mac and some fucking lacie drives, serious early 00's tip. he is asked: can't you just set this all up on a newer mac? put in the serials again?
and he replies: serials? what serials
and this is someone who was an actual quote-unquote professional, and, i presume, actually paid for all that shit. from everything everyone's told me, i'm actually super-lucky to have pirated all the shit in terms of longevity, because the genuine authentication mechanisms for a lot of stuff from back then don't even work no more. does a cubase sx 3.1.1 hardware key work in win10? glad i don't have to care
never going that route again, thanks.

that i haven't actually allowed enough in for this to happen to me, but i have a strong hunch: has arturia, or whatever, ever pushed an update and actively broken something you're working on? like, it was fine last nite, now my shit is fucked? and maybe i'm just being neurotic but if i gave in to the "always-on" plugin lifestyle i figure that would inevitably be my day someday

that, i suppose, the alternative i've opted for is: screw it, this software shit is a fucking illusion. it is no more constant than the "hardware" i have. since it's all doomed anyways, let's just have fun and record to stereo, back up the patches made and arturia keygigger projects
also: i fucking hate "apps"

i grew up with a mouse and keyboard. i now use a das keyboard, i type really fast; that's how i spray nonsense all over this board so effectively. i get onto a "smart" fone and you fucking little runt bitch, stop trying to autocorrect me. i do not want to capitalize that. that was not a typo. but it never learns and i'm typing letters like i'm using chopsticks. i've seen people get very very fast using autocomplete but then their writing no longer has any character. it's just compressed into the same generic bullshit. i think this means i'm starting to get old.
