local electronics market sells sony walkmen for 75€ (8gb)
thats more than what i paid for my refurbished ipod 15 years ago.
toplists in the web havent sold me yet. i have great difficulties finding information about quality and functionality. prices and gb size vary greatly which doesnt really help the matter.
so what is decent tech for trains and runs? preferrably max 50€, less accepted. ipod size and a small display would be nice, maybe playlists
im not gonna use my brick of a phone.

just here to say: hello, this has actually been on my mind. that my phone is an obnoxious sack of corporate spyware that may also get hacked with russian malware and i don't actually need a "phone" to play mp3s 2/3 of the time i'm out of the house with it? and didn't i used to have a device that, like, just played mp3s instead acting like a rabid shrew determined to gather every morsel of info about me it possibly can?
so, i actually have a rather decent phone -- no brick, no sir -- but last week or two i've really started to strongly consider a dedicated device.
there is one -- augh; cannot remember. as soon as someone says the name, i'll be like, "ok, yep, that's it" but i don't have enough stale context left to just drop it here. and, in fact, i was actually trying to remember this not but a week ago: man, what was that good, just-a-music-player? that did FLAC and all?

a tease? only sort of. really, really.
i'll try and keep it short because i do have a vested interest in this thred remaining on-topic: i specifically remember someone mentioning a particular thing on IRC, and perhaps i have the logs somewhere. then it came up again in the comments on ars technica article -- the comments, the random people, not the article itself. i can't quite dredge up enough to get back which IRC channel it is, so... even though i have the logs, it's likely a snipe hunt. the ars technica article, their comment software is essentially just an exposed toe of their forum; i could absolutely search for this. but, like FLAC MP3 PLAYER that will be a lot.
hell, i guess i'll do that at some point soon -- not because i figure i'll actually manage to dredge up the post of which i am speaking, but because enough words like that and i'll find one of sixteen posts speaking of the same fing

and my brain comes back: archos
i stew a moment. shiiit, yeah, i remember that. i reply: no, that's some shit from 2008, i wanted the more modern thing we read about a year or three ago
and my brain comes back: archos

i think you should just splinter off into your own reality and walk around with a yamaha MU2000 in your back with a car battery and a tube preamp and play nothing but MIDI files from video games.

Mouth: Are you Lain?
Mouth: You're amazing. You can metaphorize your real world body so completely.
Lain(wired): You're acting like a Cheshire cat.
Mouth: I can do only this much with my user permission level.
Mouth: Most people can only form an ear. I'm better than them.
Lain(w): Don't waste your breath on that. Give me information.
Mouth: If I help Lain, everyone here will call me a hero.
Lain(w): You make too much noise.

i have, dunno, exactly wtf, think it's sony WX-1000XM3, reliably i buy it a month before they drop the XM4. but they're really good cans on most days. large; chunky. i look like a tool. but i'm very clearly not able to hear you, you neurotic people down the sidewalk. clearly time for you to panic and cross-over. i would step aside but i find you annoying so i'm just playing poker here and pretending i'd do the absolute, worst thing ever -- share a sidewalk as i walk by you; whistling dixie
but temps have been hitting 100F. pouring rain. global warning; wetter shithed. and these are not, ummm, IPX9000 or wtf eva. in fact, marvels of engineering they are, i've spent a bit squinting at them, and they do seem to have some microphones up-top that are very, very rain-exposed. and these cost a bunch and i need music, i need music to walk, to keep up the pace, without them i'll actually notice when i push myself hard
and, so, last week, it's a thunderstorm, but i have to; i have to. and i'm wearing a raincoat, obviously, to avoid killing the headphones. but they have a doodle pad on the ear to switch the track and i'm only a few houses down when the coat starts doodling on the doodle pad. the track switches. the track swi -- the tra-- the volume cha-- pause. i try to adjust things. i even walk down a few blocks with my right arm very gingerly holding my hood away from th-- the volu- the track swi--
am literally cussing, loudly, in the rain, by myself, hi neighbors. right then, i thot: lord help me, don't care what it costs, i'm ordering the WX9000 whatever earbud this is intolerable
and i did. but they aren't here yet. and my phone has moments where it pisses me off even more
