finntroll is a band that emerged from a drunken bet from between two finnish heavy-metal gentlemen: one bet the other that he could not pull off a heavy-metal song in the style of some traditional finnish polka called humppa. the end result was that the bet was forgiven, and the results deemed a strong-enough concept for a band. eventually, the vocalist died of something appropriately heavy-metal like a vocal tumor. i actually do not know their albums besides nattfodd, but i've been playing tracks from nattfodd all the time while driving recently, loud, and i just want to share these because they're great just the thing if you want to crank it really loud in your car and feel the harmonics lighting up your proprioception in delightful ways. |

, which i always thought was called "grottka's barn" and i was thinking it was just a chill place to practice like squarepusher's barn, but no, apparently it translates to "children of the cave" and what do i know except that i like that this all has the feel of folk music but with visceral energy you never hear much in folk; the texture of it all when played loud... yes, like i said, try this stuff loud, in the car |

some 15 year ago my metal mate tried to point me to them. thought theyre really fun but as soon as a song gets all metal and guttural they lose me. so bet lost on me. give me the humppa stuff though anytime .-) |
